US tourists to "Old Europe" sometimes get things wrong (like being locked in someone's garden), but one thing they often get right is ENJOYING the places! I just love walking around an historic building and hearing that US family being completely excited about everything. And yes, I'm the sort of guy who loves talking with chatty Americans, so I've ben an impromptu tour guide quite a few times, simply because it's so lovely to chat to people who are genuinely excited about what they're seeing. I thought this was a very charming video.

@@EllieDashwood The time scale is different in the US, I know. I lived in Houston for a while, so I know a 1930s neighbourhood can in some instances be considered historic. It's easy to be facetious about that, but it's just the way things are and there's nothing wrong with that, surely. My own apartment is 118 years old, and that's not really remarkable. I'm lucky enough that my boyfriend has a bit of a passion for old stuff, though, so his apartment is mainly furnished with 1820s-1840s furniture, and it's SO NICE! Because it's not a museum; we slouch on the sofa from 1840, we store our underwear in an 1820s dresser, we sometimes use 1700s silver cutlery for dinner... It's just a normal apartment, but with such beautiful things in it! ("Normal apartment" meaning it's from the late 1890s and has cornicing and central rosettes in the ceilings, of course.)

Both my father and I have managed to get offered special extra tours, because we KNEW stuff, and were so interested. "Oh, that is a (insert some lesser known fact here)." "You know about that? LET ME SHOW YOU MORE!" I got a whole extra twenty-minute tour in the "backstage" area, which was most definitely NOT part of the tour, just because I mentioned "Der Meistersinger von Nuremburg." Sorry about the spelling. Who knew the tour guide was an opera buff, and that was his favorite? So cool! I got to see a narwhal skull!

Watching this makes me feel so lucky to live about 5 minutes away from Chatsworth! I’ve been going to Chatsworth for as long as I can remember and it is by far my favourite place on earth and go at least once a month. The reason it was very dark when you went was because of the fashion exhibition to preserve the clothing. I’ve just been today and they have reopened it after Christmas and all the scaffolding you will have seen on your trip has been taking down and all the windows have been opened. So lovely. You will certainly have to go back to enjoy the lovely light of it. Also, definitely just subscribed to your channel☺️

Why would the owners of Chatsworth let strangers into their house?

Because incredible buildings like this are extremely expensive to run - costing millions of pounds each year, and due to their age require constant maintenance. For example Chatsworth has just finished a 10 year restoration; costing a total of £33,000,000! Yet it’s not only down to money - with many great houses/ palaces in England (and the rest of Europe), allowing members of the public access for hundreds of years. Blenheim Palace (in England), had a printed guidebook by 1760! Like today, it offered a glimpse into an otherwise unknown world. So this isn’t unusual; most stately homes in England operate in a similar way to Chatsworth.

Yup. But then it was a good reminder of how high they lived. The carriages Dukes rode in were probably the equivalent of the cost of a helicopter today. The average person would see it go by and look at it like we'd look at a Lamborghini I suppose? Helps put things in perspective.

Twenty years ago the Duchess would occasionally help out in the gift shop or farm shop or anywhere they were short-staffed. I was friends with people who lived and worked on the estate then and one of my friends had a summer job in the farm shop and worked alongside Her Grace. One visitor heard her name as Grace and started complaining about something, totally unaware of who she was speaking to . . . at one point saying "Somebody should tell the Duke!" Apparently Her Grace said that she would be sure to let him know! My friend at the time was hiding behind the cheese counter doing her best not to laugh.

"Worrying" sheep means to chase them. Chasing sheep too much can case them to run so hard that they suffer a calcium deficit and fall down. They then need to be treated by a vet with an intravenous calcium infusion until they feel better. If they don't get it, they could die. Overly enthusiastic dogs will sometimes worry sheep to death. Sheep are not the brightest animals on the planet and can be chased into barbed wire fences, trip and hurt themselves while running or just step on each other. Please don't chase sheep or allow your children, companions or pets to chase the sheep either. An intact ram, on the other hand, will stand his ground and could hurt anyone that tries to worry the sheep.

It made him reserved and shy of company for the rest of his life. Oh, and looking at his Wikipedia page, the girl that he wanted to marry, his cousin, Lady Caroline Ponsonby, married William Lamb, who became Queen Victoria's Lord Melville. She threw over Lord M. for Lord Byron, so our Duke was probably better off without her.

My friends and I have been to Chatsworth twice. The first time we went was for my birthday, which is a week before Christmas and it had been snowing so everything looked even more beautiful and all the Christmas trees in the house were fabulous. We then went in the summer and spent more time in the grounds, which are so beautiful. We would go again, but we live on the north-east coast of England and it's a really long drive down to Derbyshire. However, we are lucky that we have some fabulous stately homes near to where we live. We love Castle Howard which was recently seen as the duke's home in Bridgerton and Alnwick Castle, which has been in Harry Potter and loads of other films. My favourite though, is Raby Castle which is an hour's drive away. It's a bit smaller than the others, but it has fabulous gardens and has herds of deer wandering around the grounds, not where the visitors are but you can see them, especially when you stand at the walls surrounding the main house and look out over the estate.

Absolutely love your videos (including this one)! Just wanted to mention as a girl from the English countryside, if you come again and see sheep, please, please, please don't try to pet them! The "don't scare the sheep signs" do seem odd, but it's because those fields often have pregnant sheep in there that can miscarry, which as well as being absolutely awful for the sheep is hard financially for the farmer. Also, getting in between an ewe and their lamb can be really traumatic for the ewe. Not trying to be a troll, just to educate others watching this!

In the Minneapolis Museum of Art, we have a sculpture of a Veiled Lady (I think that actually is the name of the piece) by the same artist. I have spent hours looking at the thing. That guy was very much a specialist, but his sculptures were incredible.

We live 10 mins up the road from Chatsworth and my daughter works in the Collections dept , so we get to visit for free and all her friends and some of mine take advantage of this perk too lol 😂. Especially at Xmas which is so special . It has saved few hundred pounds altogether!!

Had similar experience at Bodiam Castle. All of the sudden everything was closed, all the taxis were gone as well as all the people having picnics on the ground. Except for a sweet lady in the tea shop. She called her friend taxi driver who took us to train station to be on our way to London.

Hi Ellie. If you are ever in the Scottish Highlands you should visit Inveraray Castle, the home of the Duke of Argyll. It was built in the second half of the 18th century to replace a medieval castle and the decor of the main rooms is exquisite.

yeah word of warning, most things in England close at about 5pm (apart from basic shops), on Sundays it's even earlier, if they open at all on that day... and I think the Devonshires just live on the top floor, they definitely have private quarters apart from the main house

This was hilarious! If only you had met the Duke and he looked like Ralph Fiennes! I don't recall if Chatsworth was actually used in The Duchess (also with Keira Knightly), but while the story line is earlier than anything Austen, the film is a feast for the senses. The gardens at Chatsworth are extremely famous, and the Duke in the portrait is not the only one to spend tons of money on them. Later, in the 1850s, Joseph Paxton, who had designed fancy glass garden structures for the then Duke of Devonshire was hired by Prince Albert to design the Crystal Palace in London. I'm kind of into gardens, in case you can't tell. :)

Haha I love pride and Prejudice, I live half an hour away from chatsworth and I still haven't been round it 🙃 there's other places you can go to that featured in the movie and TV series... like Longnor isn't far from chatsworth and that's where they filmed the scenes in lambton. Also there's the cliff where Elizabeth stood looking at the peaks, not to far away too!

That's about 1 hour from chatsworth also there is Eastwood where DH Lawrence is from, thats close too xx

@@EllieDashwood I was brought up in a little Yorkshire village called Bolton Abbey. This is where the Duke and Dutches lived before he was the Duke. He was called Lord Hartington then. It is where they go during August to grouse shoot. My family lived there for years working on the estate. It's also beautiful and well worth a visit.

If I ever make it back to England Chatsworth will be one of the first places I will want to go back to. I really enjoyed our visit there in so many ways. It is not just 'a fine house richly furnished' the gardens are amazing, too. That statue is one of the most amazing pieces of art I have ever seen. You feel like you can just reach out and pull the veil away from her face, don't you? And that is the most hilarious story, of you getting locked in, and then almost meeting the Duke and Duchess! lol.

I love the majesty and grandeur of these old houses. It is tragic when they are not taken care of. I am totally on the same page as you with the statue. I noticed it right off the first time I watched the movie. It is a fabulous statue and you have deepened my curiosity about it since they say no one knows how he did it. Every time I watch the movie ( no idea how many times I have seen it) I wonder how he did it. I go back to the words of some sculptor who said that when he makes a statue you simply remove all that should not be there. Somehow this statue looks much more difficult. Thanks again Ellie. If you want to meet the Duke and Duchess, they usually greet the first visitors on the first day of opening each year. If you haven't read 'Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire' I'd thoroughly recommend it. Keira Knightley played her in the movie 'The Duchess' but the book is way more interesting. Are you familiar with The Mitford Sisters? You've probably read Nancy Mitford's novels. Well, her sister, Deborah, married the Duke and they are the ones who restored Chatsworth back to the wonder it is today. Debo was the only Mitford I ever saw in the flesh. Sorry, if this is all old news but you never know.

I believe the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth used an estate called Lyme Park. It’s actually quite close to Chatsworth House. I remember we drove past it on the way there.

Just an aside, everything closes early in the UK because they have a value for work/life balance. Shops close so the workers can be with their families, etc. I experienced this in other countries in the commonwealth too. America, being a capitalistic nation and very focused on making money, has the opposite view.

It isn't entirely about money. It's mainly about convenience. People work very different schedules here...and stores want to try to be open when people are not working. But...it entirely depends on where you live. In New York City, a lot of things close by 6pm, particularly in the business districts. Here in Virginia, near DC. I am surprised if a store closes before 10 pm.

The thing is, Pemberley was never written like this. Risings was like this. Read the description, it was older with darker stone and seemed part of the landscape. This is a modern notion of a cool house

You're going to love this. I knew worrying was along the lines of interfering and bothering the sheep but thought I'd find out for sure and it turns out to be an offence applying to dogs worrying sheep. Apparently you were quite safe bemusing and befuddling them. LOL I was to go to Chatsworth in 2015 when we were in England but missed out (my aunt in Manchester nearby had other ideas) but next time I hope. Would have been fun to meet the Duke and Duchess. :)

Well no not really. Nobody should be chasing sheep. You can really distress ewes who have lambs. I would be hopping mad if someone came into my field and chased my sheep.

In the 70s and 80s there used to be short second public information films on the television about not letting your dog worry sheep. They really puzzled me. Another thing that puzzles me is why the Duke of Devonshire would live in Derbyshire.

They always have. The first Earl of Devonshire was a son of Bess of Hardwick and Chatsworth was owned by one of her husband’s (Bess was married almost as often as the wife of bath). It was almost a royal house if Bess’s scheming to get her granddaughter (Arabela Stuart) as Queen on the death of Elizabeth I had worked. There was a story that they were given the title as of Devonshire because James the fool (I.e. I & VI) misheard Derbyshire as Devonshire when the first Earl bought the title.

The 6th Duke of Devonshire couldn't be an inspiration for Darcy because he was born in 1790, and Austen wrote the first version of the novel in the late 1790's... unless she heavily altered his character, or added it later, which I doubt since he's so central to the story.

This is not Pemberly inspiration of Austen. This is Pemberly for the 2005 film. But you can find the real Austen's inspiration if you read her biography.

It’s true no one is 100% sure which house inspired Pemberley. Really, Jane Austen’s life and inspiration are greatly debated by scholars. Every biographer has their own opinion and likes to assert it as fact. Personally, I agree with the theory that she used Chatsworth as her inspiration. 😃😊
