This is one of those movies that kind of slipped under the radar for years, but it is also one that is possibly one of the best stories about "ego and greed" ever made. Keanu has that perfect mix of innocence and being sucked into the lifestyle, while Pacino has the perfect mix of charisma and evil that only pops out near the end. It is a truly amazing movie all the way through.

Through the years. I have seen this movie panned. Admittedly, Keanu's accent is all over the place. But this movie is Pacino putting on a clinic. 8:10 - when selecting a jury, both prosecutor and defense attorney have a limited amount of times (I think around 10) they can "excuse a juror" they don't like, so they have to really plan and calculate whom they'll select.
@TheNewsDepot

Yes. Depending on the State's laws. A jury is typically between 8 and 12 people and the pool they choose from is usually 20-30 people with enough strikes between the two sides to reduce the pool down to the 8-12 people plus a few alternates to replace any jurors during the trial if they have to step down for any reason. The lawyers get to question the potential jurors and "Strike" or dismiss a number of them in order to make the jury as unbiased as possible.

Hi Biss, jury's are selected from a pool of registered voters in the jurisdiction the trial is taking place in. The judge will first ask questions to see if they are legally able to serve. Both prosecutor and defense attorney are then allowed to ask questions. They can't ask personal questions. Each attorney can ask questions about thier biases and background that would show the potential juror might sway to one side or the other. Then the attorneys can issue a challenge for cause or bias. They make their case to the judge and the judge decides who is in and who's out.

I feel like this is a flawed system that needs to be reconfigured, the founders never meant for the country to be so polarized and people being so idealogical, local and national politics factor in to so many cases and it’s incredibly difficult to get an unbiased jury in an area that’s say majority Republican or majority Democrat by a significant margin (I’d call anything over 12 points significant but definitely over 20 points) it’s the same with race and income, white rich people would of convicted O.J but the case was over the second they got it moved to downtown L.A, Dershowitz knew a jury of working class minorities would find reasonable doubt and would sympathize with a guy that came from their neighborhood and they rooted for on the field, sure the Fuhrman tapes, Marcia Clark being overzealous and unlikable, and the “glove” helped but that was all just icing on the cake, trials should be held in neutral venues, a black man accused of rape isn’t gonna get a fair trial in a 70%+ white district. It’s not anyone’s fault, there’s an implicit bias and white men will be thinking “how do I keep this person away from my wife and daughter” same way a rich white person accused of murder won’t get a fair trial in a 70%+ minority district
@kellymoses8566

@@markg1727 I guess until you can come up with a better way of doing it, this is going to have to do. And there is this thing called "change of venue". It's easy to say a system is flawed and "needs to be reconfigured"; the hard part is coming up with a reconfiguration that will satisfy everyone. But the hardest part is dealing with the human factor - people are going to be people no matter what you do. And something I discovered a long time ago: the public may have already judged someone long before they enter a courtroom and then become appalled when the defendant walks. These people need to understand two things: one, they have already made a judgement without hearing or knowing the facts; and two, the jury did hear and do know the facts so they are in a much better position to make an honest and fair judgement.

I suddenly wish I was Keanu Reeves. When the US was a colony of England, regular people who were arrested would sit in jail and did not have a chance for a trial. Rich Lords and noblemen would decide a commoner’s fate. So in the US all trials are public and instead of noblemen deciding, a person is judged by a jury of 12 peers, people of the regular population. To make it fair, the prosecutor and the defendant can pick and choose the members of the jury. The jury listens to the testimony, sees the evidence and they decide if the accused is guilty or not. Also, the jury does not decide if a person is innocent. They decide if he/she is not guilty. I hope this helps a little bit.

After the usual 40 movies that young people know about and suggest to reactors, the inevitable declension into el-cheapo genre flicks is depressing ... but COULD be staved off by daring to react to gems like this one. A criminal jury is made up of 12 jurors and alternates. Each attorney (defense and prosecutor) has x-amount of dismiss juror votes. The defense attorney tries to select a person as juror who is most likely to be sympathetic to his client. A prosecutor tries to select a person who will most likely convict. Once you run out of dismiss votes, the juror is seated if the other attorney accepts. You go on with this process from a jury pool until a jury is empaneled (12 jurors plus alternative). Gamesmanship does enter in when selecting a juror for a trial.
@topomusicale5580

The other piece is the Judge may also dismiss certain jurors for obvious things like being related to or knowing one of the sides (victim or defendant) or some other obvious conflict of interest issue. Those 'strikes' don't count against either attorney's dismissals.

The definition "Devil's Advocate" is a thing that still is in use. In the Vatican, when they are about to "sanctify" someone, a priest praises his deeds and another priest must do the opposite, in order to have a complete image and decide whether to sanctify the guy or not. That priest is generally called "the devil's advocate".

So, coming from someone who recently had to do Jury Duty, I can give a little explanation. You got it right for the most part, and they are allowed to dismiss jurors. They want the jury to be impartial, and if any biases are detected, both prosecution and defense will try to get a juror dismissed. Sometimes over little things, but both sides want the best jury possible for their case. Bonus, least where I live, but you get paid for Jury Duty as well, even if dismissed (in the very least, to get gas repaid)

Jury selection rules vary depending on the state. Basically, a jury is a random selection of people. From that group the defense and prosecution can disallow a person for a couple of reasons. If the juror shows bias they can easily be dismissed. There are usually a defined maximum number of jurors that the defense can dismiss simply because they want to. The idea is to build a jury that is fair minded and not judgmental.

Juries are summed to court, the selected at random by the people within the jurisdiction (county or district) and then jurors are eliminated (each lawyer can pick a few) by lawyers or based on obvious conflicts of interest (like for example if you know the victim or defendant). The remaining who are left are primary jury, alternates, or dismissed for being not needed based on the order of there summons. The jury listens to the case, and then rules on whether or not the law was broken or if the law was just. A jury has the ability to not convict a person who committed the crime (find them not guilty) as a way of protesting an unjust law.

The petit jury is the finder of fact in a trial. Collectively, the members of the jury examine all the evidence present by both sides, then decide what really happened. If what they believe happened meet the legal elements of the crime, the defendant is guilty of that crime; if one or more of the elements of the crime has not been found to have occurred, the defendant is not guilty of that crime. The judge in a criminal case, on the other hand, makes rulings on law. Proposed evidence cannot simply be presented in court, but rather it can only be introduced if such introduction comports with the rules of evidence and rules of professional conduct. There are two broad categories of evidence, although it is possible for a particular piece of evidence to fit both categories. Testimonial evidence is what witnesses say happened when they are on the stand answering questions. You may have heard of "hearsay." Hearsay is an out-of-court statement introduced to prove the substance of the statement. Thus, of you see me punch a person, you can testify that I punched the victim based upon what you saw; however, if you tell a friend that you saw me punch the victim, the friend would not be allowed to testify that I punched the victim based upon what you told her. Physical evidence is stuff like the murder weapon collected on scene by the police. The side seeking to introduce physical evidence must first lay "foundation," which is testimony or other indicia if reliability to establish that the thing being introduced is what that side is claiming it to be. If we take our murder weapon example, foundation could be laid by the officer on scene testifying that the knife being shown in court is the very knife he pick up off the floor when he was on scene. The jury is to be guided by the instructions of law given to it by the judge. On the most basic level, this is stuff like the elements of the offense. For example, 1st degree murder is the intentional killing of another person after deliberation (and in some jurisdictions, with malice). The jury cannot then decide that the defendant committed murder if they don't believe that the defendant intended to kill the victim - the jury must obey the legal instructions given by the judge. The judge is also a gatekeeper to what gets presented to the jury, and the jury may only consider information that was allowed by the judge to be admitted into evidence at the trial. Let's take our hearsay rule from before. The purpose of this rule is to make sure that the jury hears the event described by an actual eyewitness - not someone that wasn't there and only knows what someone else told her, which may or may not be what actually happened. Thus, if a particular statement is hearsay, the judge will not allow the witness to tell the jury what she heard someone say. If the witness can only provide hearsay, the judge will prohibit the witness from taking the stand at all. For physical evidence, the jury ultimately gets to decide how much weight to give to the piece of evidence; taking our example above, if the jurors think that the cop is lying about collecting the knife, they will obviously not believe that the knife introduced at trial is the murder weapon. However, the rules exists so that one side cannot just throw in whatever in the hope of confusing the jury. In a criminal case in the U.S. a jury must find that the elements have been proven to them beyond a reasonable doubt, and the jurors must be unanimous in their decision. "Beyond a reasonable doubt" is a very high standard - more than "more likely than not," more than "probably." If the jury thinks that something "probably" happened, but they are not sure, the defendant is not guilty. If the jurors cannot all agree one way or the other, the jury is "hung" and results in a mistrial. Juries are a feature of how Common Law systems believe that the truth can be determined, namely an adversarial system. The idea is that if each side puts forth the best possible case for itself, and if there is a neutral referee to make sure nothing underhanded goes on, and if the one deciding the fact is both not on anyone's side, nor knows anything about the case outside what comes in at trial, the truth will come out. It is similar to how the Anglosphere sees government. The U.S. has a "separation of powers" because we believe that we can't really trust any one person or institution, so we give overlapping authority to multiple people or institutions so that they can all be a check on each other. In contrast, on the European Continent, most legal systems are "Civil Law" systems. These systems believe that what is most important is that some disinterested person (N.B. "disinterested" is not "uninterested." The former means "I have no dog in the fight;" the latter means "I don't care") with expertise consider all the facts and determine what is true and what is not.

I think it's a myth told to make people feel safer in a church when they say that Satan can't be on hallowed/blessed ground. He's a damned angel (I'm not cursing, I mean that literally). Lucifer can definitely be in a church. His punishment means that he can no longer feel or be with God, he's lost that connection. So a church for him is just rubbing salt in the wound. Everyone else can commune with the divine, but not him. Or at least that's how I interpret that fairy tale. So many biblical stories are fun, but they fall apart if you look too deep into them. IMO, that's why there are church leaders to patch up the holes and inconsistencies with the 'true' messages of these stories.
