I’ve caddied at Shinnecock for 19 years now, we still talk about his heroic final round. 11 one putts that day, and some insane up and down par saves. Really wish the USGA would’ve let him play here again in 2018. Way to go Goose!

He didn’t get an exemption!? I know he was 49 at the time and wasn’t playing well, but she should’ve definitely got an exemption that year.

@@bretts4544he had the opportunity from what I heard. But he took his exemption the year before at oakmont. Would have been great if he was at Shinny again

I have always liked his demeanor on and off the golf course. Interesting he was struck by lightning as a kid and his mother once said he was different afterwards.# Heaven can Wait.

Was my favourite when I was growing up. 2 US Opens is incredible but no doubt he had so many other opportunities to win more majors.

I wont forget, waiting outside the US Embassy in London in the fall 2004, for a VISA, for hours and literally who cuts across the line of people, right in front of me, Retief Goosen the current US Open champion with his wife/girlfriend, going from 1 place to another in the city. I said "amazing putting mate" what an arse I was!

Surprised they glossed over that 2001 title. He missed a 2 footer on the 72nd green then had to hole a 4 footer just to get into a playoff the next day. Stewart Cink is still sick about what he did on that same green in the group ahead of Goosen that day.

To this day, has anyone ever seen a player have so many one putts at a US Open on the final day and win?. The Goose is a 21st century Bobby Locke.

Martin hayes Agreed - this guy oozed cool and class. Although, with his talent, he should’ve won more majors.
