I like that! I built my own wood console because they went to a total DONGLE world. The tower was toooooo goooood to last. I lay out everything to utilize short cables. I custom make shelves with routed cutouts so the mimi and dongles do not creep.

Thanks a lot for that review, it was helpful to get insight on monitors, and especially on the Mac mini speakers & how the Home Pod mini makes for a decent solution. The latter being small means I could also easily take it with me when going from my parents' home back to uni, etc. And yeah, interesting setup!

I wouldn't recommend a XDR for a Mac Mini, XDR with a Stand and Apple care will run you $7,070 for the Standard model, Using a $7K display on a $1K mini makes no sense but if people have that type of cash to drop for a XDR and a Mini more power to you but like Matt said the BenQ Or LG Ultrafine 5K Display will do fine for the Mini, I'm currently using a dual XDR setup but on a Mac Pro 7,1 and planning on purchasing the M1 but i'm going to wait for the Apple Silicon to mature more and kinda waiting for the Pro Version to come out and by that time the M1 should be more mature, either getting a iMac Pro M1 hope that it will look like the XDR that would be dope or a 16-inch MacBook Pro Not buying anymore Mac Pro sense M1 MP will be none upgradable

Last summer I wanted to switch to a 4K display with my Intel Mac mini. Bad idea. The computer just wasn't powerful enough and slowed down to a crawl. It's impressive that the M1 in the new Mac mini can actually drive this smoothly.

Love the setup. Does the HomePod mini lag when playing games? My regular homepod is perfectly in sync when using Safari and other Apple apps, but for anything else, audio is about 1-2 seconds behind. Thanks for the great video!

The only place I’ve had lag is in FCP. Honestly I don’t play games on the Mac so I haven’t tried it.

The best thing about the M1 Mini, is it would have cost apple more to gimp the mini GPU like they do with the intel minis. Having the same high quality GPU found in the MacBook Pro is just such a game changer. My 2020 intel mini is great, but the graphics are always feeing overworked when the CPU itself isn't working that hard. e.g, just scrolling a Pinterest webpage shows how janky the graphics are when scaling on a 4K display. I bought an M1 Macbook Air for my son, and got to play with it for a few days before I gave it to him, it is just so buttery smooth doing everything.

The m1 chip mother board is a lot smaller, the heat sink , fans etc are a lot smaller. So there’s loads of UNUSED SPACE inside the Mac mini m1 case compared to the Mac mini intel. Leaves plenty of options for someone with the know how to MODIFY UP ONE OF THESE inside the case. Like adding this thunderbolt hub inside the case some how with a modified slot in the case. JUST A THOUGHT 💭

I've currently got a 2015 MacBook Pro 15", and a 2009 Mac Pro that will be getting the upgrades I've already bought for it. That said, I'd tempted by the Mac Mini M1, but given there's no time pressure for me, feel I'd be better off waiting for the next iteration, even if it's a year or two off. They definitely turned the CPU market on it's head, though shame it's unlikely to ever reach it's full sales potential given Apple will never sell this one outside of their own hardware. AMD & Intel are probably relieved at that!

Sick video! Question: Do you connect your speakers directly to the monitor or to the Mac mini? Also, is there a quality audio difference if connected via bluetooth, airplay, aux 3.5mm, or usb?

USB is digital, so ultimately it will come down to the digital to analogue converter in your speakers / headphones, AUX is analogue, so it comes down to the decent ish quality of the built in DAC of the Mac, AirPlay uses Wi-Fi in some capacity, so will have higher bandwidth, and therefore higher quality than bluetooth, and that leaves bluetooth, which is the worst. You should connect your speakers to the Mac Mini ideally, unless you have an audio interface, so you can use the volume keys on your keyboard (or the slider in control centre).

For a work station and a portable device would you rather have: 1) mac mini and an ipad, 2) mac mini and mac book air, 3) mac book air for both tasks, 4) mac book air and 11" iPad ad companion device? Obviously there are cost differences but which approach best deals with dual work station plus portability tasks?

Matt, I am thinking of replacing my 2014 iMac with a Mac Mini M1. It’s mainly just a home computer, but I plan to get into some video and photo editing, but nothing on a big scale. Two things I want to be able to do is have good sound quality from external speakers, and video chat. What is your recommendation for a home computer setup with those two things in mind? Is a Mac Mini with an external hard drive sufficient?

Your HomePod mini doesn’t have lag with AirPlay? Are you sure? I have an airplay 2 speaker connected to a Mac mini and there’s always a few seconds of delay before a KZbin video plays because of the audio delay to the airplay speaker - the signal has to travel via the WiFi network back to the speaker. That’s why you won’t hear sound effects in video games with airplay speakers - the delay is too long to make them useful.

I have gotten lucky with mine. I know some people have issues but I haven’t since I got it. The only issue I had was when setting up the Mac mini there was some lag with the MX. but I reconnected and it had been perfect since. Not sure if it was a Mac issue or Mx issue

It's 2020 WTH... where is the webcam so you can be forced to sit in on mindless Zoom sessions all day!?! :-) Seriously, one of the reasons I have stuck with 27" iMacs instead of Mini is the integration of the screen, reasonably good speakers, microphone and webcam. Would consider the M1 Mini, but I want a great monitor with builtin speakers, ideally also with a webcam and mic. I have a thunderbolt 17" Apple which has this, but would prefer something that gives me more pixels.

Would you recommend upgrading to 16 gb RAM, or is 8 gb sufficient? I don’t use my MAC for video editing or music mixing. Primarily MS Excel for any intensive RAM usage. Like your Mac mini, is it better to spend the $200 for larger disk space to 512gb? Hate to spend additional $400 ( for additional memory and disk space) on an affordable, well priced Mac? Thank you.
