I got my xboil fs105 today and tested it. Outside temperature is 6 degrees celcius. With Toaks 750 ml titanium pot. Water boils 5.30 minutes of 500 ml of water. Its a lightweight stove.

I can't yet find the x boil in the states so I'm forced to try and make my own. I have some 12"X24"X1/4'' 6MM Thickness Felt Carbon Fiber coming in from amazon that I'm going to cut up to fit my empty pellet tins from my air rifle. I couldn't figure out what I would use for a pot stand though. I went through all my alcohol stoves and couldn't find one that would work for that 1 inch sweet spot. You SOLVED that! The Esbit for $8 usd and the graphite felt for $15 sure beats the $60 usd price x boil is getting!.

All done Sole Trail. I ended up with an Espit pocket stove with the windscreens and got a rolling boil at 6:10. The beauty of the X-boil is it's windscreen/pot holder. So simple and efficient compared to what I came up with. Thanks again for your post. Fun stuff!

👍👍👍 The Esbit Stove is another good option .. one of mine too. I have a homemade variation .. A tuna can drilled out for good airflow, a folding trivit from a SS bicycle spoke and a burner made from a 200ml energy drink can (filled with Ceramic / Glass Wool). Not as lightweight but it cost me only time spent as the material was 'salvage'. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

Absolutely, the Esbit Stove is a solid choice! And I'm loving the ingenuity of your homemade setup - a tuna can with good airflow, a folding trivet from an SS bicycle spoke, and a ceramic/glass wool burner. That's some impressive DIY action, and it's awesome how you repurposed salvage materials. A bit more weight is totally worth the cost-free creativity, right? Thanks for sharing your setup and your kind words. Take care as well, and keep those innovative outdoor solutions coming! Happy adventures! 🏕️🔥🚴‍♂️

I may have to reevaluate my cook kit. My idea for a 750ml nested setup was to use an isobutane burner like an MSR Pocket Rocket or Soto Amacus. I think the 100-120g fuel canisters will nest inside as well. And of course a folding spoon or spork like you use. I've got a few of those both in stainless steel and titanium.

I like the I guess you can say spill proof burners. Just at times. But ultralight I don’t. Only because any fuel not used can be poured at least somewhat back into the bottle. The other had to be burned off. Or used soon enough it don’t evaporate out much. Or possibility of what’s left in it being in the right position long enough than making its way to leak out

Hi, I'm new to alcohol stoves and I find your videos very educational! You got me subscribed! One question, will the graphite sponge ever go away? Like will it burn away once you use it a couple of times or it will be there forever?

Well whadda ya know. You answered a question I was having. Would it fit the esbit folding stove? The answer is yes. So I think I'll be getting one, because I love my esbit folding stove. Then I won't have to use triox tablets anymore.

But that big flame is the last thing you want in a vestibule, especially in a smaller tent.
@soletrail
@soletrail Жыл бұрын
Agreed.. you gotta choose your situations wisely. I put just enough full in to boil the water and leave it burn out if using in a vestibule. I don't lift the pot until the flames is out. But canister stoves are much safer.

So it's some carbon foam in a tin? That's hardly revolutionary. DIY it for £5. What an I missing?
@soletrail
@soletrail Жыл бұрын
You're correct in your assessment of the Xboil alcohol stove. It is a relatively simple and straightforward design, and the use of carbon foam in a tin is not a groundbreaking innovation. In essence, it is a type of homemade or DIY alcohol stove that you could indeed create yourself for a lower cost. What you may be missing in the commercial product is the convenience of having a ready-made and tested solution. When you purchase a product like the Xboil stove, you're paying for: Convenience: You don't need to spend time and effort gathering materials and assembling the stove yourself. Quality Control: Commercial products typically undergo quality control checks to ensure they work reliably and safely. Portability and Packaging: The Xboil stove likely comes in a compact, lightweight, and portable package, making it easy to carry for outdoor adventures. Instructions and Support: You may receive instructions or have access to customer support for troubleshooting or questions. Brand Reputation: Some people prefer products from established brands or companies they trust. That said, DIYing a similar alcohol stove can be a fun and cost-effective project if you have the skills and desire to do so. Many outdoor enthusiasts enjoy making their own gear and experimenting with different designs. It ultimately comes down to your personal preferences and whether you value the convenience and assurances that come with a commercial product or prefer the DIY route.
