Barefoot running is the practice of running without shoes or footwear that mimics the natural movement of the foot.
Minimalist shoes? No. Just no shoes at all.
So, I decided to have a go, with THE expert Ivan Hrastovec ...it went better than I thought!!😁🏃‍♂️
Advocates believe it enhances biomechanics, strengthens foot muscles, and reduces injury risk by promoting a forefoot or midfoot strike instead of a heel strike.
It also improves proprioception, allowing runners to adapt better to terrain. While some studies support its benefits, others caution about the transition period and potential stress injuries.
Many barefoot runners enjoy a deeper (and genuine) connection with nature - sometimes also known as 'earthing'.
It's also a more natural running experience, often citing increased comfort, efficiency, and reduced impact on joints over time.

Interesting… I wonder what Ivan’s feet look like after doing 100 K? And do his feet ever get stabbed by a branch or rock during a race? I have so many thoughts and questions.

@@bettinapoulos7891 Yes, and the 100-milers. In a word they seem to be 'ok'. No blisters or cuts for sure, sometimes a little bruised if I understood correctly. Mud, sand, soil/dirt, grass even packed-gravel seem to all be absolutely fine. The trickier terrain is loose gravel, individual pebbles and tarmac/ asphalt. What he does (and what I learned very quickly!!) - is careful foot placement is key. I also noticed that my focus levels and concentration is definitely elevated. I haven't done enough, but even by the end of almost 3k, I started to relax and 'enjoy' (is that the right word🤔) ... but certainly much more 'connected' to the run, and very 'refreshed' and calm after the run - apparently the effects of Earthing, or Grounding. Reminds me of the freedom of running around in / and around a beach (lake or riverside) barefoot, feels great! Bettina, I'll ask Ivan to directly respond, and I'll post it here for you😊

Actually Laith answered this very well. I can just add something to reinforce. 😇Soles after 100k or 100m are mostly ok when you look at them, but they are sore and sensitive because of so much doing it. Cuts happen so rarely that you don't need to worry about it. Here and there you can step on something that stabb you a little bit but this is actually good because it forces you to be more gentle and have more focus. I can get blisters if I'm on the trail for too long (like 5 hours) and there is also some snow and freezing temperatures. So mixed situations like snow conditions and some challenging surfaces can bring you blisters and also depend on the speed, because of more friction if your pace is faster. But that information about snow and speed is actually mostly the case when you are much more experienced, as a beginner I would not recommend doing it in snow or doing it faster. In the beginning everything should be like a gradual process and you really need to like it to some extent or in the beginning to be very curious about it. If you are at least curious enough to do it, then you actually don't need any education because every step would be a teacher, every step is a communication with the Earth. When you go out there you can just start walking and then when you get some feeling, then some jogging and so on. Everything you need to know you actually learn during the process.😇
