Loved this book a lot so here are my thoughts on what was unnecessary/needed/ ideas for improvement - For Will I think some great topics to cover backstory wise that don’t require death or parental neglect would have been feeling guilt about not having as much trauma/perceived trauma as his peers and so bottling up any anger or complaints he has with the people around them bc “bc their life was/is harder than mine I can’t criticize them for mess ups”. Also, discussing his struggles of being a healer in the demigod world I think it’s believable that since demigods are constantly living in fear of being tracked by monsters and given CHB and CJ’s heavy emphasis on fighting I can see a lot of demigods viewing those who don’t want to/ enjoy fighting as soft and dismissing the complexity and hardships of healers like Will. Also, maybe Rick could weave in some commentary on toxic masculinity? IDK it might be interesting. This stuff would also have been an interesting contrast to how Nico’s struggles are more…known. - Where is Damasen???? - The part with Carl and Bartholmew should have been replaced with a scene that shows Nico’s hubris and brazenness with his powers, like how Will earlier book had “I’ll leave Nico for a second, I’ll be fiine” and then got his ass kicked. - What is Riordan implying with Estelle??? - The metaphors and imagery with Nico’s sword and Will’s music + Bob mysteriousness when talking about the two of them is cool and poetic but as my friend who has never read PJO pointed out, there needs to be a better explanation behind it… - They should have spent more time in Tartus, like the whole book is about going down into Tartarus yet they spend less than half the book in there - I agree that Hazel and should’ve had more focus especially since she was Nico’s first bond with someone after he ran away, and I feel like they’d have a close bond with each other. Similar thing with Reyna.
