I'm not saying blackwashing is a correct approach necessarily. It's certainly not the same as a character being written that way and is sometimes just done for clout (especially when a writer tries to retcon a character they already wrote as a different race, I heard J.K. Rowling did something of the sort). But, for example, there are many artists who prefer to draw Percy as a person of colour because it allows them to see more of themselves in a character they already relate to. The same is true for people headcannoning a supposedly straight character as queer. It allows a marginalized person to identify with a character by giving him a marginalized trait that they possess and (when not met with a lot of backlash) can make the fandom feel more welcoming for other members of the marginalized group. Also, with characters of colour/queer characters, their identities are often important to the story and have to do with their character arcs. And even when they're not, they're important when done well because it's representation of a group that doesn't have much representation. As a marginalized person, it means a lot to see someone like you represented well. Whereas with white/allocishet characters, their identities are usually not important to the story unless you're specifically telling a story about privilege, allyship or something like that. And it doesn't really affect people who are part of that group to see themselves represented because if you've always been able to see certain parts of your identity well-represented in stories, then representation isn't something that you find yourself thinking about much. Not because you don't care, simply because it doesn't affect you as directly (I'm saying "you" just to get my point across in a normal-sounding sentence, not talking about you specifically). To act as if blackwashing and whitewashing are the same thing dismisses the different ways that white people and black people are treated in society and the reasons why representation (canon or fanon) is important. Also, who's to say that if you see a character as a person of colour that doesn't also apply to their biological family? I probably shouldn't have compared blackwashing to LGBTQIA+ stuff though. I thought it would be helpful for people to understand where I was coming from but it didn't seem to have that effect and has just brought race into this conversation in a way that wasn't all that constructive. So just focus this conversation on LGBTQIA+ stuff because I feel like I put people of colour in the crosshairs without meaning to.
