I liked your demo of a practical example using the system. The whiteboard illustration was also a plus! Thanks.

That was exactly the video I wasn’t looking for, but I am glad I found. This is so valuable for the time when I am finally able to upgrade my network. Saved. Thanks man!

Timeline scrubbing within Premiere with files stored on the NAS is really the better test.

Ah good shout! I'll make a follow up video with that, comparing to footage on an internal NVMe M.2 drive and an external SSD 🤟🤟 Cheers

@@dodmedia No worries. Just seen another video and comments where its rightly pointed out that having proxies on a local SSD and raw footage on the NAS is the way to go for editing speeds. Thanks for your video!

@@dodmedia Did you test this? Does its scrub smoothly?

Great setup David and excellent video with clear explanations of everything that somone would need to replicate your setup , I have the DS1821+ with backup to another remote DS1821+ which works flawlessly so far , the only downside I find with them is the noise levels being a bit high for my locations , I think when it comes to replacement time I'll try and go with somthing based on flash drives to reduce noise levels (I also use NVR function on mine which means drives are always active) . I only every had 1 of these 14 TB drives fail and it was replaced quickly without question so well worth going with NAS drives

Nice one Frank! Noise wise the DS1522+ doesn't seem too bad, though I guess it's 3 fewer disks spinning which will be quieter. In any case it's tucked away in a separate server room so I don't hear it at all. Very keen to get the offsite backup properly set up!

Also on the UPS setup, check if your UPS has USB port and USB control this is the easy way to setup auto shutdown. Connect USB cable, on the NAS go to Hardware / Power then click UPSselect enable UPS support, pick USB UPS from drop down for UPS Type . If it all works then you should have the option to shutdown on low UPS power

@@dodmedia A cost effective backup is the Synology C2 cloud backup I've setup a few business users with it for file backups approx €344.35 / year for 4 TB for example, I have one site with 100 TB in C2 Cloud storage , it uses the Hyperbackup app built into the NAS

Many thanks for this David, I've been thinking about a Synology NAS solution for a while so this is very useful. What sort of ballpark figures are we looking at for a setup like this? I take note of the noise consideration in the comments below. Cheers!

This was a great video, explanation was very clear and thorough. But please, please lose the incessant background music. Or at a minimum, switch it up from jazz.

Nice video - quick question: are you planning on editing directly off the NAS? How do you find actual edit speed? (e.g. scrubbing etc) I have been thinking about getting all raw media onto my NAS and then having the (much smaller) project files locally on SSD, which is also backed up to NAS/cloud. Not figured out the optimal setup yet though, so would love to know how you've found it!

I've flitted between editing from internal storage and editing from the NAS and a bit of both. Nowadays I just shove everything on the NAS, and edit straight from there. If I need to, I make tiny proxies, but not often. Scrubbing timelines in Resolve works more smoothly than scrubbing timelines in Premiere, but neither has been an issue to be honest.
