Alex Wolff's performance right after Charlie dies is one of the best portrayals of shock I've ever seen. He didn't talk to his parents because he literally couldn't process it. He could only lay in bed for hours hoping it was just a dream. Not to mention his panic attack later. He and Toni Collette were incredible in this movie.

So...as far as I've read from theories, Charlie's "tic" is the noise you'd make to call a camel to you. Paimon rides a camel in lore and since Charlie is the host for Paimon, this manifested itself as a "tic". It's kind of a scary fun fact for a second watch when you realize that Charlie was always carrying the spirit of Paimon. I guess you could say it was uh, "hereditary" *ba dum tss.*

Gothic horror writers used to distinguish between horror and terror. Terror being seen as harder to instil in an audience. A common example was that horror was what you'd feel upon finding a dead body, while terror was the feeling of smelling, but not finding, the body and the slow creeping realization of what the smell might be. So basically Natalie screaming at nothing is the realization of the Gothic ideal of terror.
@je7055
@je7055 10 ай бұрын
Stephen King, in Danse Macabre, described them as the moment when you know the monster is about to reveal itself, but before it does (terror) and then the moment it does reveal itself (horror). He also added a third category of revulsion. "I recognize terror as the finest emotion and so I will try to terrorize the reader. But if I find that I cannot terrify, I will try to horrify, and if I find that I cannot horrify, I'll go for the gross-out. I'm not proud." Myself, I've always disagreed with how the labels are used, they feel backwards to me. For me personally, the word "horror" denotes that creeping, gradually overwhelming feeling of cold dread more than "terror" does, while to my ears, "terror" better connotes the concept of acute adrenaline-rush, tunnel-vision fear. When you hear that your deranged psycho ex has broken out of prison, you receive the news with cold horror. When you peek out the window and see them running up to your door with an axe, you flee in terror. That's my logic, at least. But I'm the only one, apparently!

Toni Collette was incredible in this. The fact that she got snubbed during awards season for her performance is criminal. A bit of a personal story so I’ll keep it short: my sister suddenly passed away last year at 39. I was standing there in shock after my mom got the phone call and before my brain caught up to what really happened, the first thing I thought was, “Wow, Toni Collette’s performance was really accurate.” The screams of a mother who has lost her child, whether they’re still a child or an adult, are unlike anything else. Toni managed to bring an unsettling realism to a movie about something that, if you’re not the spiritual type, could only happen in our imaginations and that’s a rare talent. A straight horror film that’s truly a masterpiece is something that only comes around every 20 to 30 years and I definitely think Hereditary is the one for our generation. From the performances of the actors to the incredible cinematography and sound design, this is a 10/10 for me across the board. It’s definitely not for everybody, though. I’m glad you were able to appreciate it for its artistic value. Thanks for going through this for us lol

It's amazing the performance of Toni Colette. I never understood why she wasn't even nominated. Her character is already disturbed at the beginning of the movie and then they made something truly unique and special: they killed Charlie off not even 30 mins in the movie. You maybe don't know this but all the advertising was surrounded her so it's was really shocking to her dead almost at the beggining. As you pointed out, Charlie was absolutely creepy and it's really surprising her fate. About Toni, as I said her performance is BRILIANT! One of the best acting I've ever seen! It's amazing how good she is and Charlie's death literally changes the entire movie. Toni went from 10/10 to 100/10. Somehow she was able to keep up the madness that happens as soon as Charlie dies. The worst part is that she sounds like a completely lunatic person but she wad telling the truth

I think my favorite thing about this movie is how well it plays both sides of the story, right up to the end. Until the climax, you can never really be sure if it's an actual demon or just psychosis, because once you learn that schizophrenia runs in Annie's family, she immediately becomes an unreliable narrator-- as does Peter. And we only ever see things through THEIR points of view. There's almost no focus on the father's perspective, the only person we can be reasonably certain is never hallucinating or suffering delusions. And that's one of the other things it does well. All of the "signs" of the curse can be attributed very easily to psychosis. Believing that you're being stalked or something is out to get you. Believing that something is trying to get inside of you and control you. Seeing insects. Seeing fire. Seeing strange lights (which look like the ones in Donnie Darko, which is ALSO about a schizophrenic teen!). Believing that you're at the center of some conspiracy and you're the only one who can stop it. Seeing strange reflections. Hearing familiar sounds from nowhere. Sleepwalking. Disassociation. All of these things are common hallucinations and delusions. You can never be totally sure that what you're seeing through Annie or Peter's eyes is real, until they start to overlap.

I'm a family therapist. This movie to me is a metaphor for inherited family trauma and dysfunctional family dynamics. In the same way Get Out is taking the horror of racism and playing up to it's most horrific this is the horror of family trauma played up to it's most horrific. Plus a horror movie from the perspective of the sacrificial lamb does well to make you feel just as lost, terrified and confused as the characters are. 10/10, oscars for Tony, Alex and Ari.

This is my first time to watch a reaction from you. Although you are screaming at absolutely nothing and think your hands are going to push the demons back into the screen, you made some really great insights that no one else has got. First, I’m so glad I was not the only one that cried during Toni Collette’s reaction to finding Charlie’s body. I have felt that type of grief where your heart is screaming into the floor, all of the way through the ground underneath. Losing a child is the most horrific feeling no one should have to endure. I loved your observation that it is interesting that she makes these miniature scenes of her life events and she has to sleep in a miniature house to cope with Charlie’s death. I think it’s funny, however, about the ever-expanding tree house. First, there’s room for Charlie and a space heater. Then there’s room for mom and a couple of space heaters, until at the end there is plenty of room for the statue of paimon’s with Charlie’s head on it, two beheaded bodies bowing, and MULTITUDE of naked people, with room to spare for Joanie to crown the new 8th king of hell. Why, isn’t that a Christmas miracle! 🙄 I heard you mention that you watched HoHH, so I’m going to see if I can find your reactions to it. Really, what great insights you have of the film! And Mid Sommar sucked!! It was just plain stupid. I’m glad she found her tribe where they feel comfortable enough to belch into each other’s faces, (here, have a flower!)Yeah… good times! And look! No need for nursing homes. Imagine all the money you could save! ✨🤣✨

31:51 i get it. Movies that rely on jumpscares basicly force people to expect something to jump at them whenever "nothing" is happening. So the less action there is, doubled with a dark screen or humming noise and a lot of people's "flight response" is triggered (because they expect something to jump at them).
