Hi and thank you so much for this precious video! I recently discovered the Quin cherry red from Mijello, so juicy and cool (PR209; W573). As for a deep transparent brown I do love Dragons' blood from Maimeri Blu and similar is Madder Brown from RENESANS, although they are gives as semitransparent, I feel confident they won't turn into mud your layers .

If you want a color to mix darks with, I recommend permanent brown (PBr25) by Daniel Smith. It's a transparent and non granulating deep red brown that makes great darks with a deep blue like phthalo blue red shade. It's also available as Imidazoline Brown from Holbien and Red Brown from Mission Gold.

I have been using Daniel Smith Pyrrol Crimson PR264, it's very lightfast and I'm really loving it so far, only just got it a couple of days ago but so far it seems to be mixing well with others, I haven't done any swatched or charts with it yet though. And you are so right, the quest for the ultimate transparent palette is a life time quest, lol,

That is a behemoth of a colour chart but it turned out beautifully! I also rely largely on transparent paints, so there are definitely a few I haven't tried here. I hope you find a good cool red! The cool red I have in my palette is Crimson Lake by Holbein and it is beautiful but not a single-pigment paint.

I just watched your swatching video as I don't have Crimson Lake (like I have almost all the Holbeins and for some reason Crimson Lake had escaped me so far). It's soooo transparent! Love it. Thank you for bringing my attention to this colour, will definitely try it asap.

It is a really gorgeous paint! As I mentioned over on my video, it's a mix of PR177, PR122 & PV19 so if you love Quin Rose you'll probably find Crimson Lake to be its slightly redder cousin. Holbein makes such beautiful super-transparent colours.

Anthraquinoid Red (D.S, PR177) is a nice transparent, cool red. It's a bit muted, but still intense. Naphthol red (PR170) is also very pretty, but it seems to fluctuate in terms of transparency. Your chart is impressive!! Gah! I cut-off mine in half-charts so it takes less time... Huhuhu. I love your transparent palette, it's really bright and inspiring!

Wooooo I will have to check both of the reds out, thank you! I personally love pyrrol red by holbein, but it's not very transparent :( Thinking of making an opaque palette next. Have you got any palette plans? So glad you like the palette, I love love bright colours. Also love the fact I can make any muted colours from the brights :D I have to say though, I was impressed with the D.S. colours. They all mixed with other colours beautifully. However, something about them makes me feel they mixed a little too beautifully if that makes sense? Like where it should've made mud, it made pretty colours and that's useful, but I also want the option to make mud if I want to...

I have PR177 in QoR. It's their Alizarin Crimson hue. I love it. It's got this really beautiful powdery texture. As for a transparent brown. QoR has a transparent Van Dyke Brown I am dying to try. Daniel Smith also has a Permanent Brown that is a transparent red brown with no granulation. You can also use a browner PR101. I love Daniel Smiths' Brown Iron Oxide. It granulates like crazy and it skews a little red.

That's a lot of Holbein colors! I've actually steered clear of Holbein because I always assumed they were like other Japanese watercolours, in that they were more opaque than western watercolours. I might have to try them out now :)
@OtoKano
@OtoKano 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah Holbein can be a misunderstood brand. They do have a lot of single pigment colours, and their transparency (for the transparent colours) are just as good as any top brands. There are just more colours that are especially made to be opaque also. A wee spoiler, there may be some holbeins in my next give away! Keep an eye on my 1,000 subscriber video coming soon.

For lighting issues, my desk is in a corner where no light reaches, so I have two clip-on table lamps that have white LEDs in them to provide some lighting. It’s not a great solution, and upgrading my lighting is something I want to tackle in the future but....it’s good enough for now. Oh hey! Transparent cool reds are something I’m working on right now....but specifically ones that are super close to opera rose, so it’ll still be close to your Quin Rose. The Quin magenta from QOR is cool, and very transparent. Sennelier’s Rose madder lake may also do the trick for you, as it’s more red than pink and definitely cool-toned. The red that came in my sennelier test pack is transparent and warm, though it doesn’t have pigment info, and perylene red from Daniel Smith is my go-to warm red, though I just did a swatch of it over some writing and it is like 95% transparent, but not FULLY transparent, I think though that may just be a trick of the eyes. Oh, and I just tested the Carmine in my Daniel Smith palette for the same thing and it looks completely transparent, and is a cool red. Of course, I don’t know any of the pigment info for these things but at least they’re a place to start! And I can swatch these colors and send you pics on insta if you need.

ha ha ha you totally listed my top 3 favourites ever. I am starting to see Holbein and Daniel Smith like a chocolate cake. Holbein (which for me is very affordable0 is the cake batter. It's cheap, it's okay and if you bake it on its own, it'll make an okay cake. Daniel Smith is like coco powder. I couldn't afford to make a cake entirely out of coco powder, but sprinkle a little here and there into the cake batter and the most amazing chocolate cake comes out of it :D

Have you looked at M Graham's Napthol red, it's gorgeously juicy and cool. They have some wonderful quins, too. They are mixed with blackcurrant honey and really hold their vibrancy. They don't dry out, either, which can be a plus or minus, depending how careful you are, I often end up with little sticky dots of paint where they shouldn't be, jeans, bedclothes, cats, you know the sort of thing! I love all holbein's glassy sea colours and DS quin red and magenta are cool reds, if you want to check them out, too. Thanks for this, it's really brilliant, it's good to know there are other paint addicts!

Oto Kano thank you, I’m not worried about brands as such, my local art store closed last year sadly so the only place near me only sells Windsor and Newton! I’d have to go to Glasgow for more choice. Otherwise it’s ordering online. Yes it is my first time for a professional set of colours! Did you know that Cass Arts online do like 'spend £x and get £y' sales? The max they do is spend £250 and get £50 off. So if you are going to buy the paints in one go, it is by far the cheapest way to get paints.

Impressive! Lots of good information in there. Did I miss it? Did you not choose any Winsor & Newton? I would have thought for sure you would have used at least one color from them. After almost 5 years of watercolor painting I feel like I know so little. I want to use an all transparent watercolor pallet but I noticed you're using mostly phthalos and quins and yet, I believe it has been said that they are staining pigments and hard to lift once dried. Of course the only antidote to that is to not make (obvious) mistakes - in which case I'll have to really get good at painting. ;-) Again, thank you for uploading and sharing what you learned. I know video making and editing can be such a time consuming, tedious process, I have given up trying, personally.

I came from the future to tell you that this palette of yours is just wonderful! I love to paint, but hate spending my precious time on testing, swatching etc. This palette seems like a huge improvement on my own, so I think I'll just straight up copy it. One concern I do have is the lightfastness, which is always a top priority for me. Are all the paints here safe for extensive time-travel? If so this palette is a real winner. Thanks for sharing! And that chart is absolutely gorgeous!

I'm getting a bit confused by the extra colours in the colour wheel and which ones make up the three split pairs you discuss in Color Theory Episode 5. (I'm a bit unclear why you did add a cool yellow in that episode, but did not add an extra colour for the other two split pairs.) It's clear that here the warm yellow is the Permanent yellow light and the cool yellow is the Aureolin. The warm blue is Phthalo blue red shade and the cool blue is Phthalo blue yellow shade I think. But what about the warm and cool reds? These would be the Quinacridone scarlet and Quinacridone rose respectively, right?

Thanks. A friend of mine is going to Japan so I am trying to select a number of 48-50 Holbein colors to purchase. Why did you choose the ultramarine deep over the light and why did you choose both phtalo blue yellow and red shade? Thanks
@OtoKano
@OtoKano 6 жыл бұрын
You are so welcome. If you'd like to see a swatch of all of the Holbein paints, check out the swatch folder flip through video I have (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKSoqmt8rL16gKc&lc=UgyUuxhQl_8l2d2CGkp4AaABAg) I have all of the colours there. I chose the ultramarine deep over the light because I find ultramarine blues to be hard to re-wet and get a good intensity as it is. I have both, but because I have chosen such intense other colours for this palette, the light version wouldn't do much when it is mixed with other colours. Phthalo blue red vs yellow shade is purely a personal choice. I like warmer, closer to turquoise, blues. You could totally have both. I just find when I have both on my palette, I never use the red shade one. Hope this helps!

Daniel Smith, Holbein, Schmincke tend to have the best paint consistency (not too dry, not too wet), wonderful color pay-off (even when transparent), excellent flow (regardless of watercolor paper), and also reliably play well amongst each other (easy to mix blends, glaze, or granulate/charge into one another). Winsor Newton is great for beginners, but alot of their colors are hard to rewet after drying on the palette. On the other hand, brands like M. Graham, Sennelier, and other brands that use honey are notorious for being too sticky & wet (messy & take too long to dry). Qor is made with an acrylic binder which leaves a plastic-y look & feel (not as nice an experience as gum arabic). Rembrandt is absolutely beautiful, as is Roman Szal, but they're not easily accessible everywhere. Paint artisans like Old Holland & Kremer have some of the most in-demand paints, but for that reason they're too expensive -- especially when equally gorgeous paints like Daniel Smith are more affordable (comparatively) and within reach. *Edited to include a brand I forgot to mention.
