LaurieTombRaiderFan Umm, the British DO have accents. Dozens within Britain, in fact. The reason many Americans don't realize it is because our linguistic borders are generally much larger thanks to geography. A person from California sounds much the same as someone from Washington or New Mexico, for example. Yet we can still tell the difference between a Southern accent and a Bostonian accent (two that are generally made fun of).

Wow, I'm so glad I'm not alone. I'm also glad I subscribed. It's actually a really cute accent you have, when you do have it. It comes and goes, I have the same thing. I'm from Mexico and I do not have a Hispanic accent. People think I'm from Eastern Europe or "somewhere around there" or German. I hate myself for being proud of that, but I am. I love it, it's more exotic than saying "nah I'm Mexican". But I say it anyway because I love proving people wrong about that stuff more than I'll ever love seeming exotic. It also adds mystery, or so I've been told. It's an ice breaker in real life. I used to get embarrassed in that same way, "they know" or "they notice". But why should we be embarrassed when we're the ones who were blessed or lucky to have an extraordinary life with a blend of cultures and languages that enrich us so much?! It's a great thing to be bi- or trilingual! And it's a great thing to even speak!!

I'm from Argentina, Spanish is my first language and English is my second one so yeah... I kinda have an accent when I speak English. I don't think it's a big deal but I do feel a bit weird when people make comments on my 'accent' even though I don't think I have a veeeery marked Spanish accent when I speak English. So I totally understand how you feel. I found your channel like 2 hours ago and I've watched a ton of your videos already. I really enjoyed them

Hi evelina can I just say you are beautiful and funny, i just met you today on the net, and I love the fact that you made a video about accents. I am italian, I studied Languages and I took a gap year last year doing the Aupair in the UK, i already had a good level of english but I had to improve my accent obviously. People who are english motherlanguage often know nothing about learning and speaking fluently something which is not ENGLISH and they do not get how difficult and how much time people need to reach the level of being fluent and how bad we try not to sound different. Unfortunately some sounds are just too difficult to reproduce and we just sound weird. I think knowing more than ne language is the best thing ever and we should be proud of our brains :) XOXO

I didn't know Americans are so sensitive about their "accents". I can mostly distinguish only three groups. Like northern (Chicago, Boston, NY) and southern (Texas, Alabama, Carolinas, Virginia...) + so called general American. It all sounds pretty much the same to me. Totally different than Britain where like every village has it's own very distinctive accent. I would have confused her for American, but she speaks kinda "softly" though. Her accent when speaking in Russian is weirder.

Sometimes native English-speakers can be incredibly big-headed about the English language. It's not really any achievement of theirs that they had the serendipity to be born into a country that speaks the lingua franca. They should be very happy when foreign people are interested in their language and their culture to the extent where they would spend hours and hours every day trying to learn it. Does the average Brit/American/Australian put that amount of effort into learning, say, French or Spanish? Most of the time, they don't. They can only speak one language fluently. Most foreigners can speak at least two, and for most of them, English wasn't a given. They had to learn it through sheer will-power and self-motivation and it's despicable if anyone starts judging someone on their accent. Americans can't even do a British accent properly (and vice versa), never mind speak a foreign language without one. Such hypocrisy.

Itoshii Otome Are you deliberately being obtuse?
@astaliini
@astaliini 10 жыл бұрын
Itoshii Otome Why are you nitpicking? Obviously it can be done, but most Americans can't do a British accent - which is why I don't understand how they can seriously criticise a foreign person's English accent when they can't even mimic an accent of their own language perfectly.

Don't worry about your accent, there are so many accents inside of America we are really used to accents. there is the Boston accent, the New York accent, the Cali accent, the southern accent, Midwestern accent and outside of the USA, British, Australian, South African, Canada and more, it's just a widely spoken language there isn't a "proper" way to speak it. When people ask you where you are from, they might not even be thinking that English isn't your first language. I hope that makes sense! I have a friend from Canada and I make fun of him for his accent all the time, and mimic him in an exaggerated way, and English is his first language. He also mimics me for my Boston accent, it's just a thing we (Native English speakers) do cause our language has so many accent and ways to say stuff, it's not that it's "wrong" , it's more like just a game type of thing. Hope that makes sense! (:

This is a great explanation. I love hearing accents from other parts of the world. It's not like I'm trying to belittle or patronize, I just love to see how and why others are interested in learning English. I think it's natural to be curious when one hears an accent different from our own. Regardless if it's someone from my country or not, I always ask! ***** That's really impressive that you have such an appreciation for foreign languages! When talking about an entire population one can only make generalisations. I can even say that England is the WORST country in Europe when it comes to foreign languages - particularly pronunciation and fluency. It's actually rather embarrassing seeing as so many other european countries know at least 3 foreign languages haha. i guess when you speak a globally used language, you become complacent and never bother to master another.

NewDawnFades608 that's not necessarily true. Not all British people feel like American's talk like the stereotyped 'red-necks'. Although be it, it can feel like an American pronouncing a word differently can feel cringey because we're so used to our ways of speaking and many ppl might feel lk our english is to say-the original (i'm not saying all British ppl think lk this or that it's true but it does happen) however just the same way u feel not all american people pronounce words "wrong" we feel vice versa, to say your pronunciation of most words r more correct is just as inaccurate as me saying this, although one place may speak grammatically more correct than the other, u can't just say that statement outright, take things into consideration. U probably got offended by that first comment the same other ppl might feel towards yours, even though it was most likely not intended for feelings to be hurt
@simplyshama
@simplyshama 10 жыл бұрын
NewDawnFades608 I was talking about how you always pronounce things wrong. Words like Moscow - even Russian people pronounce the way the British do. And aluminium - you can't just choose to miss out the 'i' to make it simple. I'm not saying American English is uneducated at all, it's just a simplified less complex version of how we talk. Regardless, there are some words pronounced very peculiarly
@squeakypancake8067
@squeakypancake8067 10 жыл бұрын
simplyshama While I think things like herb, route, schedule and such are pretty funny with the American pronunciation, I don't really get Moscow. Considering that it's a transliteration of their word, and is only loosely similar phonetically, is there really a 'proper' pronunciation of this word, when it isn't the Russian's own 'Mosk-vah?'

I was born in the U.S., but after living in three continents and meeting people from all over the world, I've realized that Americans can be among the worst in terms of mostly-negative prejudice against foreign accents. I've had American friends tell me they think a person with an accent is slow or stupid, which makes no sense because in most cases, that person speaking with an accent has a proven ability to learn and speak multiple languages. So by that measurement alone, he/she is far more educated than the idiot judging them for their accent when speaking English. It's really unfortunate, I hope you don't experience too much of the negative side of it.

I don't think you have that much of an accent. Where I live there are varying degrees of accents ranging from unintelligible to almost non existent. I'm a linguist so my accent is almost imperceptible in English, which interestingly enough, puts me at the receiving end of a lot of funny looks. Honestly, as long a people can understand you, which they obviously can, I don't see the big deal. Quite frankly I don't get people that patronise people with an accent as if they are dumb. If anything they should be considered smarter. It's already been scientifically proven that knowing more than one language can help you recover from brain damage. Think about that for a second. Your brain is stronger than that of a monolingual person.

I find my own accent hugely confusing. I was born in England (London) to Lithuanian parents. Besides living in Lithuania for a year when I was four and then once again when I was eight, most of my life has been spent in England. By all means, my accent should definitely be British - but it's not. Rather, every new person that I've ever met has told me that I sound extremely American and are shocked when I tell them that I've never even visited the place. There are also instances when people say I sound French, Australian and Canadian. I really have no idea why that is - it's not like I purposely try to sound American. Sometimes I'll tell someone that my accent comes from watching too many American movies and TV shows, yet internally I doubt that that's really the case.

CuteSimpleStuff Europe is big, so many countries, I didn't say Romania is not beautiful,we have so many places that other countries do not have, but what I wanted to say is that as a person, you can't do so many things for your own future, you know what I mean?here if you don't know" people" you can't make it on the path wich you want..that is the sad part. I would LOVE to move to America or eaven in Canada( I know you guys hate canadiens don't understand why but it's funny) somewhere where you can do someting with youre life...

k kaluka Thank you for answering. I´ve been to Europe once and gosh, SO pretty, felt like in a movie but I wouldn´t know about really living in there I only went for two months and was traveling as much as I could. I would love to move there I don´t know why everything seems so elegant. (Even though I know not every place is like that). I like Canada as well, I lived in Vancouver for 6 months and loved it. So many nice people and nice weather. I don´t know why people hate Canadians either, that´s pointless for me but anyways!

OMG thank you for this video. I am a Russian student in the US came; here when I was 17 and Ive gotten the same sh&t from people...thank you for bringing it up! 70% of the US students would not pass the TOEFL and at the University my grammar is far better than that of my fellow classmates, yet I am the one who gets weird looks when I talk. And every time someone makes a mocking comment about my accent I tell them: yeah, but I bet my grammar is better than yours. My Eng accents is exactly like yours: sounds like a native yet with some slight pronunciation differences. You made me so happy today I want you to know that Evelina. Спасибо огромное и продолжай в том же духе :)

Oh my god I HATE when people do that thing where they're like "do you know what that means ?" Just cause I have an accent or they know it's not my first language they literally have no idea how insulting that is when they think they're being helpful. So annoying !!!

I like your accent, I don't really like American accents they just make your voice sound bad(just my opinion). The same goes for British accents some of them are nice, but some of them are so annoying. This of course is just my personal opinion.

Just saw this. Evelina don't ever be ashamed of your accent! I know that when you're young everyone wants to fit in. but knowing TWO languages is such an advantage! Anyone who has an accent, means they know another language, which should only be looked up to, never down on. only the ignorant low lives can look down on that.

Your accent is so soft, and really quite lovely. To me you sounded like Eastern European (wasn't sure where) who had spent a lot of time in the US, honestly. So...not too far off. Don't worry about the rest of the Americans when it comes to comments like that. There are a lot of people in American (because as a whole we tend to be exceedingly and frustratingly ethnocentric) who are very ignorant about other cultures. Hold your head high, be proud, and know that honestly, most people think of you as exotic, in the best way possible :)

Don't worry about it. The BIG POINT is that you speak 3 languages very well. From now on tell people that when they question you about your accent, and ask them how many languages do they speak. So that way you'll make them shut up on the subject.
