One thing I've found is if you're setting overheads by yourself it helps to saddle your posts and then you don't have to hold up your overhead. It's a tad more work but you can run your pipe long and then cut it off and also if your welds eventually break your pipe won't fall out. Looks good. Take care.

I've used flux core wire on my suitcase mig and spoolgun for years for structural welding. I've welded a lot of pipe and structural steel and never had a failure.

Just purchased one a couple of weeks ago. So far, it has performed as other coolers do, but I do want to try to use your technique to see differences. I am located in Central, South Texas. Having a cold bottle of water or Gatorade is crucial when out welding during the hot as hell summer. Great video.

out in Alberta it's really easy to get a case of 6010 or 7018... but that 11018 or 13018 is nearly non existent "like the whole inter provincial board only has a few hundred pounds floating around"... but its cheaper to clad a 2500 axle into a solid bar that the 3500-5500 S111 trucks come with, the spline ends are the same size. needs cleaned and pre-heat to 170*F. 7018 does a very good job patching machinery when 10018 11018 12018 13018 are behind a wall of... order a pallet at the tonnage $$'$$$ and wait a few months...

Refiring to gate clearance (around 19;30) If it isn't a slam latch gate I try to leave about 3.5 or so inches of clearance (arm with a jacket) & pinched fingers.

As soon as I saw the project I knew what happened. Surprised it took this long. I have also had this issue on galvanized pipe that is saddled. Doesn’t seem to happen on angled welds like 45* corners but yes used black and galvanized pipe.i think I know why I have the issue but I use the same solution as you.

Cracking welds or near welds on drill stem is because of the pipes hardness. Tensile strength is 100,000 psi and higher . Rule of thumb weld metal should be higher strength than the parent metal . Drill stem has little ductility as well that is why low hydrogen. Welds are less prone to cracking . Pre heating helps also. I've used various rods on higher tensile material 7018, 11018, 8018C2 , 8018C3 and preheat was important as well

Could you explain the whole "C2" and "C3" thing? Im not familiar with the applicatoons they are used for or why. The 8018 part is a no-brainer though.

Hey I recently became a welders helper, and I wasn’t given a welders helmet, they told me to use my hand to cover the flash from the arc, all they gave me was a pair of safety sun glasses, is that a osha violation, I’d really appreciate it if you reply
@arosswelding9 ай бұрын
That’s normal. I do not know if it is OSHA approved… But I do know wearing sunglasses definitely helps. As a welder helper, you do not need to look at the welding puddle. But you usually are more than welcome to look at it if you want to as long as you are not in the welders way. But you will have to bring your own welding hood.
@Toasted_Stator9 ай бұрын
As long as you're not staring directly at the arc, however it can also reflect off of reflective surfaces and you can get arc burn too if it is for longer durations... I worked at one place and they would tell you to squint when tacking. Lol. I wouldn't recommend that, it will mess your eyes up. But that's called a safety squint 😆.

Hey Austin do you have any cool A Ross stickers for my hard hat ?
Do you have your own business? If so, do you just do odd jobs and are most of them farm work? I'm about halfway done with welding school, but ultimately I would like to be independent and do odd welding jobs to earn a living. When the time comes (I have 2 semesters left), I'll probably try to find a local guy to see if they'd be willing to answer questions about it.
@rksando19 ай бұрын
Setting a horizontal across two posts can be a pain to tack. I made a couple of clamps using 2x4's that bolt onto the posts and let me rest the pipe. Sure beats getting smacked by a piece of pipe or falling off a ladder. You don't want to wind up on a hilarious KZbin video along with skateboarders cracking their nuts riding a rail!!

the proper term for pipe is easured from inside measurements --2"pipe is 2 7/8 on outside, it could confuse these young folks that getting started
@bsquadrider9 ай бұрын
How you're describing it is the right way to measure pipe, but in oil field pipe it's described by its outside diameter, often times you'll get 2 7/8 oil field pipe but the inside demsneions/wall thickness can vary quite a bit.
@altonemery95269 ай бұрын
You are correct normal pipe terms. 2" pipe is 2 3/8" OD

Not sure why everyone in the US wants to downhand 6010 on everything. One uphand 7018 is better than any 6010 downhand hillbilly weld.
@Toasted_Stator9 ай бұрын
Or uphand the 6010 too. (Still not as strong obviously as the 7018, since the tensile strength is greater with the 7018 rod). But at least you'll get better fusion / penetration. That weld must have been just laying on top of the steel and not penetrating into it. That's thin stuff too must have been cold as ice
@daleanderson889 ай бұрын
@@Toasted_Stator It's not all about tensile strength... yes, 7018 has 10,000lbs more tensile strength, but it has produces better dynamic characteristics as it's a ductile rode. Not to mention it is a Low Hydrogen rod which produces a more crack resistant weld, especially in the HAZ. 6010 has 10,000lbs less tensile strength and produces a less ductile weld and falls shorts when dynamically loaded. There is good reason why there are many different types and classes of electrodes. Everyone just seems to love 6010 because the puddle "freezes fast" and it can fill practically any gap. As a pipe rig welder for the last 12 years... save the 6010 for pipe and use a more appropriate rod for structural like 7018.
@Toasted_Stator9 ай бұрын
@daleanderson88 that is true. Nothing to add. That about covers everything. A good welder can fill pretty much any gap with 7018 too though. With good control and the right amperage for the application. So you're right, save the 6010. Except it doesn't make sense to me to use 6010 on pipe with 7018. It should be 7010 and 7018. That way there isn't a weak spot (being the lower tensile strength rod of 6010)..
@daleanderson889 ай бұрын
@@Toasted_Stator Most procedures where I'm at use a 6010 root and 7018 fill/cap - pipe fab etc. 7010 (hip) is just used for pipeline as is 8010, usually just fill and cap. They generally call for 6010 5p+ as typical for root passes on pipe. I'm up in the Canadian oilfield which is a bit different from the way things are in the USA, but I'm sure 6010 5P+ is typical for root passes on pipe down south. Just different procedures and clients that's all. Lots of companies are going with STT (Lincoln) or RMD (Miller) for their roots it's a high tech hard wire root (MIG). Then followed by Fluxcore fill and cap. Generally used on big Inch heavy wall. Seems like that's the future for large inch pipeline. Still prefer stick though haha
@justindavid87479 ай бұрын
The way its been explained to me In basic terms 6010 in the root allows the pipe to flex and move a tiny bit and not Crack over time

run 5P up hill always. The concept of welding down hill is not for the sake of the ease the procedure allows when compared to going up hill, it's due to the reality of welding a round piece of pipe and the 20 odd different rod positions required to do it....hope that makes sense.
