I noticed in this episode, Aang's acting felt the most real so far. His line delivery was noticeably more deliberate, thoughtful and slower than before - which as you said really comes down to direction.

I like how they introduce the fog of lost souls early in this. Just because it was in korra doesn’t mean it didn’t exist in tla. I really like how the start sowing the seeds of azula’s insanity here too by having ozai back zuko and say this is what he expects in an heir. Azula has always been as much a victim of Ozai as Zuko has.

This episode and the next episode have a few moments that are from Korra and the comics. They’re small and don’t necessarily need to be known to enjoy this show but the Fog that the Gaang fell into is called the Fog of Lost Souls. It’s from Legend of Korra where if someone gets lost in it they relive their worst memories and the longer you stay in there the worse it gets. It seems the Netflix version is saying that Koh uses this Fog as a hunting ground to capture people. There’s also a moment in EP6 that I’m sure you’ve already seen where The Mother of Faces the small sculpture that Roku has is Koh’s mother. The Mother of Faces is from The Comics The Search. I won’t spoil too much about it but it’s the story of Zuko’s mother. If you’re gonna read one comic I’d recommend that one personally. It’s the most interesting plot line even if it’s not my personal favorite one.

I’m of two minds with the show. On the one hand, with only 8 episodes to fit everything into, they can’t quite dive as deep into characterization for each of the characters (despite actual runtimes being similar, you can’t just squish 3 episodes of the cartoons they were originally made into one live action episode and call it a day). So we miss out on things like Aang learning waterbending, or more of a focus on He Bedi’s spirit attacking the village. On the other hand, I hate how quick fans are to hate things. Too many people are trying to watch this show through the lens of “how well is it copying the aspects of the original”, when it should really be thought of as its own separate thing. And it’s easy to find faults when comparing it to a completed show. We don’t know how future seasons will build on things and expand things yet. Like you guys, I think Book 1 of the animated show is good, but not the classic we love. The original elevated itself in Season 2. So there’s definitely room for improvement with the live action, but I don’t think it’s as bad as many fans are saying it is.

It's not about comparing it. There are things that one does in telling a story that makes good storytelling. This is NOT good storytelling. It "tells" instead of showing CONSTANTLY. Which insults the audience's intelligence. It relies on eye candy instead of meaning and character development. Therefore it lacks the actual lessons for the most part. For instance, why does Sokka matter anymore? He doesn't because he didn't start out a sexist brat who we get to see develop into an intelligent man who values all people, especially women. So now, when he values women and is mature it doesn't mean anything. As a mother, I have taught my son and daughters what valuing women looks like literally using the original show as a reference. It matters. It's actually why Sokka is my favorite character. This show teaches NOTHING. It breaks my heart. And it's NOT because of some vapid, shallow reason like it doesn't look enough like the original or re-enact every single scene the same as the original. It, in fact, often copies the original in way too many ways and tries to rely on those shallow style choices to skate by. Some things are flat out ridiculous looking because they've tried to copy the same cartoon look of a person or scene. The problem is it lacks its SPIRIT. And I'm tired of people acting like that's not what's happening here. I won't be watching this soulless simulacrum with my kids.
@HeroDM77
@HeroDM77 10 ай бұрын
@MuricaTurkey You are being way to harsh on this show. It "SHOWS" a lot compared to it's telling. Sure some things get condensed to fit into the story they need to tell, it happens, But they are showing what they want to focus on. The impact of the war, trauma and genocide. In the end of the day, they still show us what has impacted these characters most, and sets them on their path to over come that. And Sokka, yeah they got rid of him being sexist....but that was only for 4 eps of the original show anyway. They wnated to focus more on him findig his purpose and roll he wamted to play more than his superiority complex.

Very well said... I agree so much with what you are saying, specially about the "judging as complete show vs one season" ... I'm actually going to be a little harsher on the first season of the animated series... I actually think it is the worst out of all seasons of avatar (Aang + Kora), it is all subjective of course... The Netflix adaptation is not perfect but it is good, and I like the creative ways in which they integrated the animated stories. One of my highlights is Bumi, they improved a lot on him. I love the exploration that they do on him being on this war for 100 years. And I love that even when showing that more adult believable version of Bumi he can still be this quirky crazy character. Anyways... Let's see how season 2 turns out, I think that's the season where we'll see if the Netflix adaptation holds up

@@MuricaTurkey My god, you really think Sokka being sexist mattered that much to the show overall that he's not important in this version? His sexism that everyone cried so bad over it being cut out lasted for like 2 episodes of the entire series run, and that's only because he didn't know any better because of not getting out to see the world.

I noticed that the show seems to be combining events related to each other by location, even stuff that was in different seasons. Like in Omashu, they combined Jet, the Mechanist, the cave of lovers (which was season 2 when they go back to Omashu to find an earth bending teacher), and Iroh being captured - which was shown to happen while Aang interacted with Hei Bai (the forest spirit) in the cartoon. And here in the spirit world they have Koh "the face stealer", Wan Shi Tong (the owl) who was in the library in season 2, and the Fog of Lost Souls which is in Legend of Korra! I liked the Netflix show, but it's a little weird to see it all combined in this way, not gonna lie.

I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like this show allows the actors to express a bit more anger than the cartoon. When Aang snaps at Sokka and Katara, it's not entirely out of character for that situation, but in the show I feel like he would have been less aggressive about it and be more exasperated. As if complaining instead of hostile. Even the argument Katara and Sokka had seemed extremely intense whereas in the cartoon Sokka might have tried using more humor to placate Katara and failing rather than yelling at her to grow up. It's subtle differences, but I suppose for a Live-Action the stakes need to appear very real.

as a hardcore atla and lok fan, the live action adaptation is doing a great job of ADAPTING the story to a live action series. it was never going to be a 1 to 1 remake of the animated show and i don't think anyone should want that. this show was always about a genocidal warfare from the perspective of children and you can actually feel the stakes now that it's live action.

I started watching the animated version since there is so much referencing. My opinion of this show hasn't stayed the same thru any one single episode. It's been an emotional rollercoaster. at first I don't like something they changed, then they bring me right back to liking it, then I dislike something, then I like something else and it makes up for it. The only one thing staying consistent is the fact that the more I rewatch parts, the more it grows on me. I'm not a hater, but I'm still a critic and a skeptic, but I'm slowly coming around.

On the child acting being iffy at times and how you noted how the kid(s) are better at the martial arts scenes and lacking on the dialog scenes is because they are what 10-15 years old. Its hard to cram in martial arts training, acting lessons and normal schooling and then just being a kid. Not saying it can't be done because it can, but not every kid wants to be rushed around and busy all the time. Sometimes they just want to be, well, like Aang, just play and go on adventures. Training and studying can get boring.
@Algorythmfpv
@Algorythmfpv 10 ай бұрын
To add on what Jen said, it must be even harder to find a young actor that fits all three elements, being able to act, being able to do martial arts, and the most important roadblock. LOOKING LIKE THE CHARACTER. lol you can only make prosthetics and makeup go so far. and I know a little bald kid is probably one of the more simple things to weed through as a characterization but I feel like the couple choices you're going to get of young kids that can act and fight are just going to be such a small pool the diversity isn't going to be favorable to someone looking to fit such a HUGE and beloved IP's main character.

So FUN FACT...We're Five Episodes in and...Aang still hasn't learned or Trained for Water Bending. For a Season based on a Season called Book 1: Water. There's not alot of Waterbending Training going on lol. Episode 5...Was decent. The Fog Concept is from Legend of Korra with a bit of The Swamp Episode from Book 2 of Avatar thrown in slightly too I guess. Wasn't a bad episode. They set up the Owl. The Special Effects for the Creatures are great. They changed Koa The Face-Stealer's original concept. You couldn't show emotion on your face to him or he could steal it. But that's a nitpick and what they did with him was pretty cool overall. My only NEGATIVE is Sokka's Flashback and having his Dad be disappointed in him. In the original show Sokka and his Dad were very similar and Sokka succeeded in his Water-Trial Test that we got to see in the original show. So I don't like this addition of his Dad being disappointed with him. Alot of this show is basically trying to be dark and gritty for dark and gritty's sake when the original show despite being about War and the horrors of it, was still a colourful comedic tone at heart which is lost here with this adaptation sadly. But this episode wasn't bad. It was one of the better ones and Episode 6 was pretty good.

But this show has in no way said anything about it being “Book One: Water” like the animated show did. It was very planned out with a beginning, middle and end. I like to think that’s the reason it was such a banger when so many other shows can run too long and end up losing the plot. A lot of scenes and subplots from episodes in season two and three are showing up in season one, even lore established in ‘Korra’ has been used. That tells me that the pacing for this series could wind up going differently than any of us expect. We’ve also not heard a mention of the “avatar cycle”, namely the prescribed path for learning the other disciplines: Air, Water, Earth, Fire. They very well may introduce Aang to earthbending first, as a way of introducing Toph.

Where in the title does it say book one- water. This could go for four seasons

@@iamdeathiamentropyiamdarks3517I did say a season "BASED" on Book 1: Water. Didn't say this Season was called Book 1: Water. Huge difference. Also, yeah, they'll probably split the adaptation of Book 3 into Two Seasons or Two Volumes.

I had a lot of fun with this live-action adaptation too. Even though I grew up watching the original, I can't join the pack and just hate on it like as you mentioned it's the "cool" thing to do. Every episode, even with the changes, I found myself saying "That's an interesting change" "That's an interesting way they did this" but I never hated anything. Most reaction channels I've seen so far seem to pretty much share the same sentiment.

It's really not because it's "cool," this show is flat out bad. The writing, acting, CG. It's a slog.

@@Andrew-Collet Right viewership is definitely the big metric for quality, everyone knows the most popular things are always the best. Call of duty are the best games on the market, apple makes the best phones, starbucks has the best coffee on Earth by your logic. Genius take. Not to mention, any new show that comes out gets top 10 on netflix. Funny thing, the number 1 trending thing on netflix currently is the ANIMATED show. Your argument could be used trying to say the Lord of the Rings reboot was actually good, because tens of millions of people watched the premiere. That means nothing.

@@trashsplashtucker I mean…yeah, viewership and subsequent sales usually does mean you are the best of the best in what you’re doing if people to continue to buy into it. That’s literally how capitalism works. All of the different cultures in the world that watched the show didn’t collectively come together and say the writing is trash and that convinced Netflix to pick it up for not one, but two more seasons, a rare move on their part in the days of cancelling things prematurely. The animated show also got renewed interest from fans that never even knew about the show until the live action came out, creating more success for the Avatar universe as a whole, hence why it’s trending again as well. That’s not hard to figure out.

The VFX, costume design, set design, music, bending forms, and nostalgia boner scenes they are throwing in are carrying the weight of the bad script writing, and the child acting. I have faith they will both get better though.
