I have friends who are broke that spend a ton at xmas and peoples birthdays on gifts. They have 5-15 people they buy gifts for on xmas and then buy another expensive gift on bdays and spend $100 going out for the part also. They are literally in student loan debt, and barely have anything left over after rent and bills. They also go out every week blowing a bunch of money. They see nothing wrong with this and complain about not having any money.

If you decline this gift she will resent you for the rest of her life. That's how women think. 12 years from now when you ask her why she forgot to close the refrigerator door she will start crying and tell you you returned her gift.

My wife feels the same way. If we've decided no gifts, she gets mad if I buy her a card. She doesn't want jewelry. She'd rather use the money towards a nice vacation, which we do. If I bought her a diamond, she'd kill me. We do go out to eat on birthdays, anniversaries, and Valentine's Day, but we have no debt and a paid-off house.

My family agreed to stop buying cards for each other because they’ve become too expensive. I now find a free one on-line and print it out on regular printer paper. I had to mail Mother’s Day. I bought a 6 x 9 envelope in a pretty color for 50 cents at my mail facility. Father’s Day I fashioned an envelope out of a sheet of printer paper.

People just grow up with different norms. I love gift giving. My husband couldn't care less. My husband and I sit down each year, write out each holiday and all the people we're shopping for (including our kids and each other), tack on a few unexpected events that will inevitably come up (marriages, babies, etc.) and make our annual gifts budget. From there, I can feel free to give gifts without worrying about his reaction. Also, sitting down and writing every holiday and person out in full, we realized it is jaw dropping how much you can spend on gifts without even realizing it! After we saw it, we suggested switching to a family draw for Christmas for the adults, and everyone seemed relieved when we suggested it.

Yes you return the tools! A "gift" that costs you money isn't really a "gift". If she's so sweet, she would want to work on your debt free journey- provided she's included in discussion about the budget and plan to be debt free.

Good point by John, it could well be a 'testing the boundaries' thing. If he ignores the situation, she then feels as if she has permission to keep going on gift giving sprees for everyone. Nope, nip it in the bud. Sit down and set a small budget for essential gifts (suggest dropping all adults, they already have stuff, don't need more stuff). For each other's birthdays etc, agree upon a cheaper solution like pizza or other favourite take-out food, as a small treat/reprieve from the gazelle intensity. For my adult life, about 90% of the gifts I have received were really unwanted. Most given away or thrown away.

My wife has several friends with several kids each and all of the birthday parties we go to each year, she insists on spending at least $30 on gifts for the kid who could care less and prefers screens over any gift. This adds up to over $500 / year wasted and closets filled with unappreciated merchandise.

Best solution is have this tough conversation John and Dave discussed, but also have a conversation about how to show affection without gift giving. Dave was right on to bring up love languages. Seems like gift giving is one of her love languages. Most people have other love languages too so caller could help her come up with other ideas to show affection.
