So fun fact about this movie. This interpretation of Godzilla was so despised, it's known as Zilla or GINO (Godzilla in name only). Toho would relaunch the original Godzilla series one year after this and they would buy the rights to use the Zilla design for the movie Godzilla Final Wars. The real Godzilla killed this one in like 5 seconds

@EdgyZiggy
@EdgyZiggy 2 ай бұрын
@@maniac50ae14 I'll tell why it got so much hate. Because of the name and behind the scenes. See, this really ISNT Godzilla. Just in name only. Even for the time, it's a very cheesy and campy monster movie that isnt going to be for everyone but it struck a nerve for Godzilla fans especially because the Heisei era basically just ended with Godzilla DYING. Toho had big plans to basically end Japanese Godzilla movies by killing the character off and to give it to America so they can continue the legacy and maybe pick it up like a decade or so later. To follow up such a big moment that had NEWS COVERAGE with an American reboot that kind of spat on that legacy especially after the filmmakers made fun of the Japanese films for the rubber suits and goofy tone despite making a silly monster movie themselves filled with 90's cheese... yeah, it's not a good look. Because of that fiasco, Toho started making more Godzilla movies immediately after as a form of damage control. Thus, the Millenium era of films begun. They bought the rights to the Tristar Godzilla (officially naming him Zilla) to put him in Godzilla Final Wars literally JUST to kill him to prove that this one is a faker and they had to make THAT their final movie after it was a box office disappointment. It's actually sad

I remember it fondly because my best friend (who was a girl) cried on my shoulder when adult Mothra died. My hometown would show old sci-fi movies on Saturdays (this was in the early 80s, and they would show movies from the 60s and before) I think they showed all the Showa films up to Destroy All Monsters. I watched the 70s films on VHS with my same friends. Even at such a young age (7 or 8), I had a major crush on that same friend, so her sitting with me at the movies was a highlight (and my being able to have an arm around her was thrilling *(even though I was sorry she was crying)

Interesting, the filmmaker for Godzilla: Minus One spoke about Godzilla (1998) earlier this year. From Wikipedia: “Takashi Yamazaki, director and writer of Toho's 2023 film Godzilla Minus One, spoke favorably of the 1998 film. He felt that on its own merits, the 1998 film is "fun" and "quite well executed" but understood why some are adamant to consider it not part of the Godzilla pantheon.[100] Yamazaki also refuted the misconception that the 1998 film was allegedly responsible for the franchise's box office decline in Japan, stating "it had been in decline for years" by the time that the 1998 film was released”

If Jen was sad for Zilla in this, then Peter Jackson's King Kong will break her. Fun fact: This was the first and last big budget role for Maria Pitillo (Audrey) because everyone just *despised* her character. And I mean Jar Jar Binks levels of hatred, perhaps even worse since I know some good people who *like* Jar Jar. It was so bad that in a script written for a possible sequel (can be found online, written by Tab Murphy of Disney's Tarzan and Atlantis fame) she appears in the beginning as she and Nick are about to get married only for him to abandon her at the altar because signs of a new Godzilla has been sighted (actually another much bloodthirstier monster), and a new love interest is immediately introduced. Yeah.
@BigSal51
@BigSal51 3 ай бұрын
Aw wow I didn't know she never acted in any other features due to the reception of this one. And that sequel script was brutal! It wasn't her fault, the character was just poorly written; completely unlikeable despite the movie wanting us to root for her to get back together with Nick. As far as the actress goes, it wasn't a geat performance but she certainly wasn't terrible, much better than many actresses that went on to more prolific careers. She certainly had the looks too, no reason why she couldn't have had a decent movie career. I guess sometimes there are feature debuts that are received so bad that it rings the death bell for your entire career going forward. It ain't all bad though, I've seen her appear on TV shows; she had an appearance in Friends once as a child adoption agent for Monica and Chandler, who just so happened to be an ex of Joey's, I remember recognising her as that blonde chick from Godzilla, and this coming from someone who grew up on this movie being a child of the 90's, so it wasn't a complete waste of everyone's talents!

This movie gets alot of hate but I love it. As an 8 Year old in 1998 who grew up watching the Toho films and then seeing this and Godzilla 1998 being the first English Movie I watched in Cinemas after first coming to live in England was a profound experience for me. I love this film. I love the Action. I love the Soundtrack. I love the wacky cast of Characters. Matthew, Jean, Hank, Kevin, the guy who plays the Mayor and Sergent O'Neil Actor who later acted in Desperate Housewives, I loved this cast. Especially Jean Reno. I fell in love with that beautiful Frenchman after watching this. The human side of the story is fun and engaging and has lots of cool or funny comedic moments which none of the current films really have. That energy and tone just isn't there but Godzilla 1998 has it in spades. I would have loved a sequel to this. We got the animated sequel series but I would have preferred the original next two live action films in this. People shit on it too hard but this film was FUN. Like actual Fun. Half the movies we get now just don't have that Fun Quality to them and this did. Sadly I feel like this is the last real Fun Film Roland Emmerich did before he started to dish out real turds. Stargate, Indepence Day 1 and Godzilla 1998 have this feel and Cast to them that other movies I feel never did after this. I brought this on VHS and watched it so much until the tape broke. That's how much I loved this film as a kid and when it comes on TV I will occusionally sit back or put it in the background to enjoy. Its just a good bloody time. Yeah, I would have liked a stronger Godzilla but alot of recent films always depict Godzilla differently. No need to bash this version for not living up to the OG.

It’s fascinating to see someone who didn’t “grow up” with Godzilla see that this film missed a lot of beats regarding the character. Funny enough, there was the intention of it being a trilogy (the sequel featuring a giant hive of bees with the Queen dubbed the “Queen B***h”), but after critic response they pulled the plug quickly. If you want to know how the story continues, there is a 2 season series that details the aftermath of this film: other mutations running amok, alien invaders, shady bio-medical agencies, plenty of callbacks regarding the original films, and even a “Destroy All Monsters” plot-line which fans describe as the best of the whole show. A lot of the critiques against the film are satisfied in the show with much respect for the characters (both monster and human), a definite recommendation from me.

@@0saintclark0 Half of the episodes can be found in HD quality on KZbin (allowed of course), while every other episode can be found by searching for it within a certain educational Archive.

@@art_christiancahalan The kaiju zilla jr was meant to fight in the sequel was a kaiju termite, not a bee, but I will say i agree at the beginning of your comment. Most casuals who haven't grown up with godzilla, barely know anything about him and haven't watched any of the modern MV films (or minus 1 as a bonus) who have seen this film as their first and only G flick typically say this film is the best or is a proper representation of godzilla while saying time and time again *I don't understand the hate for this movie* I think she only understood the criticisms because her husband who is a godzilla fan was telling her the criticisms, it also helps they're going to watch the rest of the MV after g14.

My niece, Savannah, loved this film, she watched several times cheering ''Zillie'' on, before she realized they killed him, she started crying inconsolably, until her Daddy rewound the tape! Jen reminded me of that!

I remember loving this movie as a kid. I think it was my favorite movie for a time lol. I had toys (including a huge Godzilla) and stuff too. I also was super into the subsequent animated series. I still have drawings I did of some of the monsters from that.

Some fun facts about this film... There was a surprising amount of Suit-mation acting in this. Not just the baby G's, but adult G had some man in suit stuff as well as some very fine animatronics and miniature work. I'd have killed to work on this movie. The sequel animated series gives this version of Godzilla the satisfying arc he deserved since it never got a sequel film. The Marines declined to assist with the 2014 G film due to their depiction in this film. The Army and Navy stepped in for 2014. Please watch the 54 original, then the monsterverse version, then Shin Godzilla, then Godzilla Minus 1. You will appreciate them.

In a later Japanese film they retconned this version to be named Zilla so it's weirdly connected to the 2000s films

Yeah, "ゴジラ Gōjira" is Godzilla's name in Japanesse, or you know, the actual name. Gojira was created as a metaphor regarding the use of nuclear weapons and the French metal band with the name "Gojira" is indeed called after the kaiju so it shouldn't be surprising how much involvement it has with activism of a lot of causes but mainly environmental.

Other films by director Roland Emmerich include Universal Soldier, Stargate and Independence Day. I recommend watching the Japanese Gojira films, including the 1954 original and Shin Gojira. This was followed by an animated series. Besides Godzilla 2014, I recommend watching Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the Skull Island animated series and the Monarch series

Remember seeing this in the cinema in my early 20's back in 1998 .... absolutely loved it back then. The effects were great for the time. But, of course, fast forward almost 30 years later and looks like someone fired up Blender and threw this together "for fun". :P

I love film as a kid my mind was so simple back then. When I got older and watch it again, I was like man this wasn’t good as I thought it would be, but that happened a lot the flims when I was a kid. My most remembering part of the film it’s been victor filming Godzilla for the first time in Godzilla steps right between him
