Yes actual footage was used and it comes with a great story. The stunt actor that was used was a small person as they wanted to scale the cage down to make the shark look bigger. So they also scaled the tank down as well. What they didn't think of was the small tank had half the air. So when they put this small stunt man in the water with the sharks (which he had never dove with sharks before in his life) he had only half the air. They were able to get him out just before a shark got caught in the line to the cage (the real footage of the shark rolling around onto of the cage at the end of the movie). After seeing this the stuntman went AWAL the next day and never went back.

That was the first scene filmed for Jaws. In February 1974 off South Australia. This was before Dreyfuss was cast. Filming for Jaws proper didn't begin until May 1974 on Martha's Vineyard. Ron Taylor filmed the underwater shots. His wife Valerie was tasked with trying to paint scars on the shark with pink lipstick. The shark was a 13ft male. Spielberg wanted more shots so they went back in March but were threatened by local abalone divers for chumming up the sharks so they gave up. The local abalone divers were on edge after abalone diver Terry Manuel had just been killed by a great white.

Comparatively very little of that is to do with Jaws. Commercial gill netting and long line by-catch and the Asian shark finning industry is responsible for 90% of shark killing. You can add in the beach netting programme as well. In the long run Jaws BENEFITED sharks. It lead to more interest and consequently more scientific field research. This has culminated in far more knowledge and understanding. Benchley said he was gratified that he got hundreds of letters from kids each year telling him how much they loved sharks and want to study them. There are two sides to every story. 👍

TheRealMist, No worries. Believe it or not but even before Jaws, sharks were being wiped out. In 1970 when Ron and Valerie Taylor turned up in South Australia to film great whites for the classic documentary Blue Water White Death they had a hard time finding any. Locals told them they were declining not only due to sport fishermen but due to commercial by-catch. Off New South Wales, Australia the grey nurse shark was decimated in the 1950s and 1960s by spear fishing. They looked dangerous, so were massively targeted. Again, this was before Jaws. At least Jaws sparked awareness huh? Cheers. Best wishes. 👍

I consider this film to be Spielberg’s best film. It was made when he was young and fearless and had so much to prove…and prove it he did. It was made before his films became so formulaic and safe. There’s a ton of fascinating and fun trivia about the making of this film. In fact many people have suggested that a film about the making of the film should be produced. There’s also a play about the relationship between the actors in the film which stars Robert Shaw’s son who plays the role that his father did in the movie. It’s called “The Shark is Broken”. The reporter on the beach at 14:00 is the author of the book that the film was based on, Peter Benchley. My theory about how Quint became such an obsessed shark hunter is that he was so traumatized by what happened to him on the Indianapolis that he became a serial killer…of sharks.

To answer Jenn's question, the only time there's were real sharks was the scene at the end with Hopper in the shark cage. Was shot in shark infested waters in Australia. The double for Dreyfus was shorter, the cage was smaller and the boat was scaled down because the sharks were around 15' long

Actually not correct the many shots of the shark underwater were real.sharks they didn't use the model often as it broke down so much which actually worked better in end.

Not shark 'infested' waters. Just parts of the ocean where sharks happen to be easy to see. You can go cage diving there now with Rodney Fox's company. He was the guy who first developed shark cages for observing great whites in the late 60s after he was almost killed by one in a spearfishing competition.

Phil, They never intended to use the mechanical shark for the beach scenes. It was the Orca based scenes where it kept breaking down. By end, the shark worked well and that's when they got all those shots. Bruce was used for most of the cage attack shots. Ron and Valerie Taylor shot the real shark footage in February 1974, three months before Spielberg began filming on Martha's Vineyard. Ive been to the spot at Dangerous Reef, South Australia, where they filmed the real sharks. Very remote. Just off Port Lincoln. 👍

The number fun facts of this movie is endless. That was an actual tiger shark, one of the boats (boat that wasn't rigged to sink) sunk, Shaw hated Dreyfuss, shark wouldn't work made the script be wrote on the fly, yup, based off Jersey Shark attacks, the repoter was Peter Benchley, and yes many actors and Spielberg do not go the ocean now...and so many more fun facts🤣🤣

I just love how the suspense is building from the day at the beach before Alex kitner is attacked, the build up to the 'shark' sighting on July 4th, and the actual reveal of the shark out at sea. I would definitely recommend the 2nd film for the channel. Some pretty great suspense scenes and deaths.

Jaws is a 1974 novel by American writer Peter Benchley. It tells the story of a great white shark that preys upon a small resort town and the voyage of three men trying to kill it. The novel grew out of Benchley's interest in shark attacks after he learned about the exploits of Montauk, New York shark fisherman Frank Mundus in 1964. Doubleday commissioned him to write the novel in 1971, a period when Benchley worked as a freelance journalist. The reporter on the beach is Peter Benchley. Robert Shaw was not quite sober when they did the first take of the Indianapolis scene. He did the entire speech in one take the next day.

Australians Ron and Valerie Taylor shot the footage of the live sharks in Australia, with scaled down cages and a little person inside the cage to make it look bigger. The thrashing around part was an accident when one of the larger Great Whites swam into the top of the cage and went nuts when it became stuck. No one was in the cage at the time but they changed the ending, where like in the book Hooper was suppose to die. Fun lil fact Ron had to go down and retrieve the cage whilst in another cage.

A little bit of trivia here, the actor who played the mayor found that anchor jacket in a thrift store just after he got the part, so it belongs to him, not the costume dept. There were 4 animated sharks, right side, left side, above view and one that could be shot from any angle and none of them worked reliably in salt water. The TV announcer on the beach was Richard Benchley, the author of the book,"Jaws".

Great reaction. Love the analysis too. I do recall when I was younger (in HS), I watched a rerun of this on late night TV. The thing is, it was the night before my buddies and I was supposed to go surfing. We left when it was still dark, arrived at the beach, and all my buddies went in. I walked to the water, peered out, turned around, placed my board on the sand and sat and waited for them to come in.

another little fact about Jaws - Robert Shaw the actor of Quinn was an alcoholic and would regularly turn up for shoots drunk - hence why he comes across the way he does. He forgot most of his lines and filled it with improvisation, some of which stayed in the film. The poem before they set sail was never in the script.

Jenn was right on the mark with this movie. Yes, scary and funny at times, but what makes the movie is the chemistry between the 3 main characters. She described it as magic, and it certainly is. Their interaction and portrayals were spot on. She said she enjoyed the second half better, and it makes sense considering it was mostly them. A note about the footage of the real shark. The real shark did caught in the cage, and the cage had to be released. The gentleman who shot the footage said the freakiest thing he's ever seen was the shark, trapped and entangled in that cage, sink past him into the darkness of the ocean.

In the original script, Hooper was supposed to get eaten by the shark. But there was a secondary camera crew in Australia getting B roll of sharks and they got that scene with a real shark on top of the antishark cage. It was so good Spielberg kept Hooper in the script The scene where Hooper is in the cage they used a little person in a scale cage so the shark would appear to be the 25' that's in the movie.

Footage of real sharks was shot for this film by Ron and Valerie Taylor off the coast of South Australia. They used a short actor in a miniature shark cage to make the sharks look enormous. By chance, a great white attacked the cage at a point when no one was in it, and the Taylors captured it on film for Spielberg to incorporate into the movie. Peter Benchley's original book was inspired by the Jersey Shore Shark attacks in July of 1916, which resulted in four deaths and one critical injury. Another source of inspiration was a 1964 news story about fisherman Frank Mundus catching a 4550 lb great white shark off the shore of Montauk New York.

What I really love about these old films is that they really aren't about what you think they are. I mean they have a much deeper subtext that runs through it. I don't think modern movies are written anywhere near as well as some of the old classics. Take ET for example, it isn't a movie about aliens. It's a movie about a kid struggling to deal with the separation of his parents which just happens to have an alien in it.

I was born and raised in Rhode Island. The island in the movie is a made up island community in New England like our Block Island and Massachusetts' Martha's Vineyard. I can attest that this movie single-handedly KILLED the beach business this and the next summer. The beaches of RI still had about 1/4 of the people on them but pretty much no one in the water. It was also pretty strange that Disney World's attendance/profits more than doubled those summers (That's when we went lol). Another memory of this movie is my parents going to see this movie. I was 10 when Jaws came out so my parents had the brains enough not to drag me along and left me at my grandparents. When they came back my Dad still had my Mom's fingernail craters in his arm. LOL Good times!!!! Peace

They did use real shark footage! In fact they even used a little person in a proportional cage to make the shark look that much bigger! And in fact, if I'm not mistaken, it was the shot of the shark thrashing the cage that ended up "saving" Hooper's character... He was meant to die but, because they had that shot and it was so good, they used it as a way to have his character survive.
@Daniel-ct9ml

The cage scene footage is actually partially real. In the script, he dies after the shark breaks into the cage, just as he does in the book. However, when they were filming, an actual great white broke through the cage. (Since it wasn’t made for actual cage diving) and the stunt actor had to swim down into the bottom. The footage was so good that they kept it in and one of the larger plot points of the book was changed.
