I get asked a lot about my camping kit so I thought I would do a detailed video on all of my kit. I'm sure this'll change or adapt over the next year or so so but for now, this is it.

Back before the last ice age we didn’t have sleep mats! Our first ones were simple closed cell foam roll mats. The next improvement was the self inflating mat, which I still use as if it gets a puncture it still provides a basic level of comfort and insulation. One tip I would give you is to get a bigger stuff sack for your sleeping bag. Ideally a canoe bag. If you have an oversized bag it’s easier to stuff your bag into the far corners of your rucksack. Certainly avoid using compression sacks as that’s just like carrying a bag of rugby balls :)

Great film, always good to see what other people take, reference the jetboil, you said the gas canister doesn’t fit in the cup section, I can guarantee that it does, I have the the jetboil flash and always carry my gas inside the cup section. 😊

Totally agree - The right backpack for you, is the one that works for you. I used various Osprey backpacks, my favourite for a while was an Ariel 65L, but I ended up finding they have a frame that digs into my hips - causing a bit of pain - could also be to do with packing too much as well.... We live and learn. 😃 After much research I switched out for a ULA Circuit 64L and I love it! Again, it's all about what's right for you, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. 😃 Most of the blow up mats are noisy when you move or roll around - but once you're asleep, you really tend not to notice.... your camp buddies will though - and they'll tell you about it in the morning ... lol 😜 If you want to change your mat, I suggest looking into the Thermarest ProLite Plus Womens Self-Inflating Insulated Sleeping pad. It will take up more room in your pack though... and again, it is all about personal preference. What ever you using, if you're getting out there, that's the end goal. Hey Grace I only just got back into last year with similar kit, been through 4 Osprey and 2 Gregory and now using an Atom Packs Mo 50, and custom made Cumulus bags. Base weight now down to 3.5 kg.

If you're thinking of changing your sleeping pad, I bought the Sea to Summit Etherlite XT as I had heard the Thermorests were very crinkly. It's really comfy but it makes a bit of rubbery squeaky noise! Wanted the Nemo Tensor Insulated as they're supposed to be quieter but couldn't get one in Europe at the time! 😕

6:50 and 7:05 are why I love following you haha! As for sleeping mats, I recently bought the Sea to Summit 'Comfort Plus'. It's pricey, however it comes with a waranty for any manufacturing problems. It uses a fancy system where the pack it comes in can be used to inflate the pad in a couple of puffs of air. The Comfort Plus has two layers to it, an upper and lower (you have to inflate both, so four puffs of air). It saves the warmth from going into the ground and is sooooo comfy! Honestly, I'm wondering why I bought a mattress at home for a LOT more money! It also has an amazing pillow function where, using magic, the pillow 'sticks' to the mattress and doesn't move, but then pulls off when you want it to. Magic. Witchcraft. Who knows. Anyway, it packs down to about the size of a 4pint milk carton. So yeah, that's my only advice I can offer. You seem to have nailed the rest!

Good video, as someone else said, i would always take dry bags, for kit, sleeping bag etc. Down jacket i find a must for evenings and early mornings also i would never go hiking without a map and compass, one minute you’re happily hiking up a mountain the next thing you can’t see your hand in front of your face

Good advice! My recommendation is to buy 3 waterproof sacks (Go outdoors do 3 packs in 3 different sizes) One for clothes, one for food, one for kit. That way everythings protected from getting wet or anything leaking onto anything else but mainly when your setting up camp you know where everything is without rummaging though your entire bag

I got a pack of 5 different sizes for about a fiver on Amazon, little red one is perfect for the first aid bag then others for food, clothes, electronics etc.

Some very good advice for beginners but may I suggest a couple of other items. A water filter or water purifying tablets mean you don't have to carry too much water - it adds a lot to pack weight. Also a toilet bag with trowel etc - not a glamorous piece of kit but essential once you're out for more than an overnight. Hope you continue to enjoy wild camping - started 46 years ago and still love it!!!!!!

Nice vid, I've watched so many now trying to decide what I'm taking for the West Highland Way next year. Haven't tried it yet other than in the garden but I've got a Naturehike Cloudup-1 tent,a Berghaus sleeping mat (also noisy, I think they are all like that other than the foam roll up ones but they're much heavier and bulkier) and a Mountain Warehouse sleeping bag with a liner.

I have a Crivit (Lidl) sleeping mat which is almost identical to the thermorest version you have but quieter, durable (mine’s done numerous trips to Snowdonia, along with the Alps with no issues), blows up quickly and easily, and cost £9.99. (It was £12.99 originally - mine was reduced). Great performance and incredible value for money. I’ve been trying to get a second one ever since but so far my local Lidl has yet to restock them. Definitely buy one if you see it.

I've just done some mods to my rucksack as it happens, trying new things and such :) I absolutely love my Lowe alpine aeon 27, it's super light and ample space within, so the mod should hopefully compress my gear-not to make it burst at the seams, but to fit every corner and remove excess air so regularly reached items can be grabbed without everything getting stuck on zips or whatever :)

Ahahah!! I sleep with my legs bent too!! Nobody's gonna Mummify me!! 🤣 The Synthetic bags too, I find, are quite sweaty.. I have a Mountain Equipment down Sleeping Bag and he's proper cosy 🤗 I'm also with you on the pillow thing! How anyone can sleep without a pillow or on an uneven surface, is beyond me.. if I could only take thing one item, a pillow would be my choice 😂 xox

Great video Grace, useful stuff. I'm keen to understand the definition of 'wild' camping, as opposed to just... camping? When I was in a kid in the scouts we'd do 2 or 3 day hikes carrying all our gear - we'd call that 'camping', but I guess 'camping' these days is plenty of home comforts on a site with facilities? I have a mate who wild camps in all seasons, but just uses a tarp (no tent!), I think he calls that wild camping. Really enjoy your channel, great content and it inspires me to get up more fells 🙂

I would love to try some wild camping, I think I’m a bag and small tent away from having what I need… I wouldn’t do it outside of April/May - September so probably wouldn’t need a super expensive sleep pad or sleeping bag… plus need to find a mate to come with as doing it on my own feels weird… great video though, some great tips on some of your gear, especially the bag!

Depends on what jetboil you buy. I know the minimo you will struggle to get the gas canister in but I use the Jetboil flash and that can fit a 100gram canister just fine all inside.

Nice video, it's good to see what others carry, what weight do you carry for say 2 days and one night, not sure I could get away with 66 litres, water (5-6), food and 1 beer plus the usual stuff has me at 25 kilos ish, but that's usually fresh food lol.. I can cope with the weight as I don't have to keep up with anyone. I know I need to work on my water supply.

Good choice of items Graces! Got the Kestrel from osprey (counterpart to your for the males out there :'D) and love it, a bit heavy but sturdy and comfy af. I'd recommend the Etherlight XT if you might to reconsider that sleeping mat. It really surprised me 10cm thick super comfy almost like your lying in your bed. Besides the prize downside i find it kinda bulky but still a lot smaller than other sleeping mats. There also a new insulated variant goin to around R6. I think its the best you can get if you want to lightweight comfort (Other similiar option would be nemo tensor) ... Just my 2 cent And keep on doing those vids im enjoying them lately :)

Hi Grace, I just started wild camping this year, like you, I done a lot of research and felt I had bought all the right equipment, going for the lightest options. I also carry a Patagonia down jacket and rain jacket and also waterproof over trousers. My pack is weighing in at around 12kg, which to be honest feels like a house on my back, especially on those up hill hikes. Just curious, how much weight you carry, as I feel I may be wimping it a bit 🙁

No the stuff sacks come with the sleeping bag and blanket :) my kit weighed in at 10kg’s before water on my first wild camp and I’ve mostly taken the same stuff so I’d say between 10-12kgs 👍🏻

Have you ever considered using a dry bag for your tent like you have for your sleeping bag? I know you said you hadn't packed your tent properly but even if you did I'm sure it will pack down smaller with a dry bag. I started using them for all my tents about a year ago and would never go back to using the bags they come in ever again. A 10 litre dry bag is perfect for most if not all 2 man tents and don't cost much

I’ve resolved the ‘problem’ of no hanging hook by buying strong magnet hooks (eBay); magnetic hook inside attached to metal disc between inner and fly.
