Brilliant video. I have recently found a pair of male and female smooth newts and a female palmate newt in my new pond (8 months old) in North Wales. Also, have common toads and frogs in garden. I would made up if Great Crested Newts arrived too. Keep up the videos :)

Awesome video, I love newts. You have a lot of beautiful Newts in Your pond, In ponds in our area we also have 3 species of newts. Instead Palmate Newts we have Alpine Newts[ Ichthyosaura alpestris]. Males in blue nuptial coats are awesome....

love this we have quite a few in our pond unsure which type we have a creamy coloured one and 2 dark ones some smooth ones I reckon at least 8 I guess there could be more. Love just sitting quietly and seeing them feeding they don't seem to be bothered by our dogs mooching about either.
@TheAquaticGeek6 жыл бұрын
The cream coloured are most probably female smooth newts, their colour can be completely beige or dark brown and spotty and everything in between. The males have a blue flash in their tail and an orange belly with black spots

Ive recently moved into a new house in the Northwest of England (near Manchester) and we have a pond, I was wondering how you keep yours so clean and clear since mine is barely transparent and how can I attract these kinds of newts?
@TheAquaticGeek9 жыл бұрын
It takes a few months for your pond to become balanced. Add plenty of oxygenating plants such as eledona crispa, these will eat up the nutrients in your water quicker than the green algae that discolours the water and also provide lots of oxygen for your wildlife. As far as attracting newts, they will come as long as you give them the right conditions, they prefer fish free, but i get some in my Koi pond too. They like good water quality, plenty of planted cover but some open water for displaying too. I got my original batch of eledona crispa from ebay for about £3 for ten plants, it grows quickly and is ideal.

Thanks mate :) ill be sure to check that out ! We already have fish in the pond but thanks for confirming that the fish will not restrict my ability to house newts.

looks fantastic. I have the green oxygenating plant that you have there and just recently all the leaves (if you call them that) have been stripped away. and the water is starting to become less clear. all thats left is the stems. any thoughts on this please. I have found some kind of insect that cuts about an inch off the stem and lives inside it, could these be detrimental to my plants? in info is appreciated. thanks.

+uniuni lots of insect larvae, tadpoles and some fish will eat your plants. The plants will probably recover fully over the winter when fewer animals are around. It can take a few years for a pond to find its balance but left alone it will. The only maintenance I carry out on my pond is in dec/jan when I clear some weed from one area to provide some open space and prevent the pond becoming completely overgrown. The Newts need some clear areas for displaying in the spring.

Ian Carmichael thanks I have only just reinstated my pond which had been dry for a few years. So we are starting from scratch. Added some plants this spring and have been amazed to see a pair of newts (smooth I think). I’m excited to see what’s to come!

It can happen as they will migrate back to ponds to breed at this time of year, roads and paths are one hazard that they face.
@opinionschannel81177 жыл бұрын
Could you put them in a fish tank?
@TheAquaticGeek7 жыл бұрын
+2024 Vlogs You could, but you would require a licence as the Great Crested Newt is a protected species across the EU.
