Great video. This is much more me. Up until now on you tube/instagram I've learned zero waste means rows of fancy mason jars and bamboo utensils!! Silly really, its just buying more stuff. For me zero waste means 'think like my granny did' :)

I love the message too of not just tossing stuff because it doesn't "look" zero waste. I would love a wooden hairbrush, but I wasn't planning on tossing my old hairbrush for a while, so why not get it's full life and then get a more sustainable one.

Tip in general! Whenever you go out to eat: bring your own Tupperware to bring your extra food back home! My mom has done this since I was young and the restaurant owners are always grateful that they save money too!

Very real life video. I find it funny watching "zero waste" videos and they're basically saying throw away everything plastic wether it's empty or not and buy all these gorgeous glass jars instead right away. Isn't throwing out things before they're used up because they're in plastic even more of a waste? Lol. I'm slowly trying to transition to a more zero waste method of doing and buying things but my husband isn't as concerned as I am, he does reuse a lot so thumbs up for that. We also live in a more rural area and don't have stores around where we can bring our own jars and fill them up so it's definitely more of a challenge. Just so happy to see a realistic video that doesn't make me feel guilty for not be 100% zero waste. I think if we all do our part and do as much as we can it will make a world of difference.

Always consider donating your unwanted food to a friend or a fellow vegan who is struggling with money, its way better than it going stale on your shelf. In Finland we have a small fb group "vegan food share". Consider starting one in your own area!

Love the fact that you are so honest about your stuff. Every blogger that I watched showed us a super clean, white kitchens and houses but I always wondered if it is really true. Throwing away your storage containers and buying frenetically new ones of glass or steel is the opposite to zero-waste. Very honest and humble video. Love it!

I love this! I know it's been a little hard for me to accept that it will be YEARS (hopefully!) before I have the beautiful aesthetically pleasing zero waste home I want. But this is because I'm not buying new things, so it's a GOOD thing! That's hard to remember. I so want to just go buy a bamboo toothbrush right now, but I've got an already open pack of 6 to work through. I agree it's easy to get wrapped up in the "looks" of zero waste. Loving this journey, and you just gained a subscriber:)

You got me hooked on zero waste. It's you! from you, I watched the TedTeen talk on zero waste and then started following Bea (which I relate to most since I'm a full-time working professional with a hubby, a kitty baby, and two children). I inspired people at the Lush Store to be zero waste and bring containers to the grocery store.. but, again, this started from me finding your videos. Thank you SO much. Love your gentle, understanding and informative videos! Hope you are having a wonderful day, week, month, year... :)

It seems to be the time of year for the portrayal of the not-so-perfect or indeed transitioning-to zero waste and green lifestyle. I just finished reading several blogs stressing the same thing you so beautifully show: every step counts and rather than going for the beautiful minimalistic mason jars that are so iconic, it makes way more sense to reuse the various bottles and pots you accumulate over time! Thanks for this indeed very realistic tour!
@SustainablyVegan

So good to see a 'realistic' kitchen tour. When I started out bought far too many 'pretty' jars and then realized (after using them and trying to fit them in my cupboards) that I'd bought the 'wrong' sizes... A year in I've found uses for all of them, but wish I'd started slower and thought each 'cupboard' through before I purchased anything new. The oats are also a great example. Because we have to eat gluten free I've also found the best way to buy some things is in bulk (25 lb?) bags via the internet vs. having to buy everything at local bulk stores. It's also a good option for those who don't have ready access to bulk goods. It's not always the 'prettiest', but it's real. :-)

Thank you! I’m just starting out with Zero Waste and was feeling bad about the massive amounts of Tupperware I own (I used to sell it so I got soooo much for free). But then I realised that it actually means I already have lots of storage containers for food and other items, and I can keep these containers out of the waste steam for as long as possible by using them every day. The “mason jar aesthetic” is very pretty, but it’s no more functional than mis-matched items.

Awesome video. I love the "realistic" term too - there are times when I'm not living with people who are zero waste and also some kitchens just aren't beautifully lit minimalistic spaces. The average person is not going to have a Pinterest worthy kitchen overnight when trying to reduce their waste so I think it's very valuable for people to be honest about what their homes are really like.

Thank you for making this video, this is exactly what I've been wondering about since I started to be interested in Zero Waste. All the pictures of Zero Waste have beautiful mason jars whereas I have empty jars of sauces, mayonnaise, pickles or instant coffee. But I didn't want to buy new jars just for the looks. So I was still using the plastic containers I already have from takeaway curry etc because I didn't want to throw them away. Then I felt l like I wasn't doing it properly. But now I feel reassured. Thank you so much. All the best.

Hi Emmy you are so right. The low impact lifestyle along with being vegan isn’t pretty most of the time, it is a challenge but also rewarding. I have always been thrifty and tried not to waste. Now it is crucial everyone changes their lifestyle for the animals, the planet and the next generation. If people only realised the advantages of using less plastic, going meat and dairy free etc. and not just the negatives most people wold be surprised. This lifestyle is cheaper and less stuff equals less stress. You are a great ambassador for the movement. Thank you. Peace

I wanted to add for recycling, some cities and towns have specific recycling plants you can return aluminium cans, separate from the recycling plant. You get money back for it and the cans are recycled better because it's a facility specific to that material :) similar to how some churches and school collect pop tabs ! (Might be a Canadian thing lol)

I just started being a zero waste lifestyle & minimalist lifestyle and a healthier athletic lifestyle into my life. Doing all of them at the same time would be insane, but little choices I make each day help a lot. So far my kitchen looks like yours. Some mason jars & some containers that I just wash and reuse. I do carry a water bottle, but I still feel more comfortable buying bottled because some areas of the US don't have the cleanest or safest tap water :(

We have a transitioning kitchen and it’s where we find its hardest to transition but at the same time it’s where we see the biggest difference, in changing how we buy our veg and dried produce, in changing to more sustainable cleaning tools and in starting to compost the amount of waste we dispose of has dropped massively

I think that those perfect kitchens are good for us to be inspired but it's important to have your own style and go to your own pace. Found your own way and your personal contribution. This has to be fun. I love that you are encouraging real stuff. We can make mistake but is important to make this journey meanful

This was such a great video! I really like your idea of zero waste lifestyle. I am not zero waste, I have just recently discovered this way of life here on youtube. I'm not sure I will do it, but I will definitely take into account some of your advice and that of other youtubers. And it's so awesome that even if you do have some plastic containers, you reuse them. You're the first I've seen showing their plastic containers. Everybody has some. Or bags, or something, especialy if you live in a place where it's difficult to recycle or take your own containers with you when shopping. I also have a lot of plastic containers, and I've had them for years, but I reuse them. If I can't reuse them for food anymore, I will use them for coins, for example, or medicine, as you mentioned. I also reuse the plastic bags that I have. I'm kind of late to this video :)), but I really loved it. Keep up the good work!

This is what people need to see. Honestly i think people see those minimalist and unrealistic videos and they get so discouraged or overwhelmed that they just say fuck it and dont even try then because its not realistic for so many people. Its better to have thousands trying little by little to be zero waste than to have 2 perfect people being completely zero waste and shaming the majority. If everyone could just do a little it would make a world of difference.

Thank you for sharing your kitchen! I've been afraid to do a zero waste kitchen tour because it is not perfect and it is definitely not aesthetically pleasing, but now I think I might just do it! :)

Yeah here in the states, in Michigan, where I'm at is not 1 of those that love this whole zero waste thing and my only little bulk store only has baking, lentils, candy, spices, coffee, tea, oils, and you need to watch the prices too cuz some of its too expensive to even buy, just like if you shop in Whole Foods, which I can't afford to. So recycling cardboard or glass is a constant at my place and now I've turned into a hoader of glass containers that I haven't found a use for yet. It's definitely not easy here.

Thanks for this video :) I still live with my parents and I'm trying to encourage my family to be more zero waste. Sometimes I wish I could just move into my own place and start over, but this video reminded me to take it one step at a time and that there isn't a golden, minimalist rule to abide by. I was wondering if you have any tips for zero waste crafting? I enjoy painting, scrapbooking and other such things, but often the supplies come in tonnes of plastic packaging. I try to be as conscious as possible about what I buy and how I recycle everything, but perhaps you can do a video on this topic some time in the future :)

Thank you so much for doing a realistic kitchen tour like this. Too many videos look far too "perfect" and it makes it daunting and seems unobtainable and expensive.

I notice a lot of your containers have leftover label bits on them. if you're interested in removing the sticky bit and rest of the label try a bit of oil on a rag or toothbrush to clean up the jar!

I had a Lithuanian housemate that got through one of those giant jars of pickles every week and a half. I have so many jars now it's great :) Could you do a video on zero waste related suppliers that are all UK based? I was completely ignorant of and oblivious to the pollution from all the shipping container ships until those articles on cruise ships came out.
