People demonstrated on the streets. A multi party election was done. A democracy party won a landslide in 1988. But Junta refused to hand over power. Instead Junta slaughtered people and continued multiple coups til today. People finally took up armed revolution and then overthrew the military junta. Federal democracy is future of Myanmar.

What I don't understand is why hasn't India fortified its border with Myanmar?? India has such a fortified border with China and Pakistan and yet in civil war-riddled Myanmar, India hasn't done anything. How is it that China has continuously kept its border with Myanmar in check and India hasn't? All of the troubles you see happening in Northeast India is because of lack of initiative from the Indian government and because of the tribal groups who have ethnocentric feelings due to their ethnic group also being present across the border in western Myanmar.

It's because if Indian government build such fence, the local indian population of those States starts protesting. There's a strong ethinic brotherhood among a few ethincity splitted within india and Myanmar. Indian states like meghalaya has given shelter to so many Burmese Refugees and the local population over there supports the Move as they feel they should help out their ethinic blood brothers and sisters. So indian government can't do unless the population is against the decision. While China being a totaltarian government doesn't care about what the population say, CCP foremost priority is country's well being and they don't shy away for doing anything that benefits or safeguard china. This similiar issue has been with India during Sri Lankan civil war too where the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees did multiple bombings and attacks in india in 90s and even India's former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a Sri Lankan Tamil

If India was a communist state India would have simply done population exchange (like China does) of North Eastern States like Manipur and Mizoram.... perhaps something like displacing Meiteis to Maharastra, Kukis to Rajasthan, Mizo people to Tamil Nadu and keep Marathis, Rajasthanis, Tamils in their place in Manipur and Mizoram and the next day you won't witness armed tribal ethnic conflicts and won't even feel the need to fortify Myanmar border. [By the way, even Soviet Union loved population exchange and that's how they ended up displacing the Chechens and also settling ethnic Russians in far eastern regions of Russia where non-ethnic Russians lived.]

@@Judah_889 Firstly, the Indian government not being able to control its own people shows that it doesn't have control over the entire country because it gives priority to the local people (who likely don't even identify as Indian) instead of overriding those people's opinions and fortifying the border to protect its nation. At this rate those tribal people are basically running their own de facto nation if they have complete control over the border. Secondly, what has Meghalaya got to do with this? Meghalaya doesn't even border Myanmar and the majority of people in Meghalaya are Austroasiatic-speaking people (mostly Khasi). Kuki-Chin people are completely different and are not related to people in Meghalaya whether Khasi, Garo or Jaintia. Just because Meghalaya is in Northeast India does not mean it's affected by what's happening in Myanmar. Northeast India is not all the same. It's giving racist ngl.

First of all Arunachal has nothing to do with Myanmar. Manipur belongs to meiteis, kukis are not original manipuri. Nagaland is for Nagas and they will never allow kuki-chin-zo tribes to peacefully settle in their state. It is not a question of supporting Myanmar's Junta. India is only trying to maintain good relationship with its neighbors. Otherwise these states end up becoming vassal states of China. Ideally India wishes that there is democracy in the neighboring states. But that is not up to India. Also directly supporting rebel groups of another nation will be criticized by the international community. India may be held accountable in the UN. There are countries lining up to find an opportunity to malign India's reputation in the international community. India does sympathize with the minority groups in its neighborhood. But India is forced to abide with the international law. Same thing happened in Srilanka. These things should have been sorted out during partition. Once the borders are drawn and mutually accepted on paper, it comes with its set of sovereignty obligations which India is forced to abide by.

Actually this border demarcation is entirely wrong and divided people's and family. WW 2 proven that security of india depends on butma. But policy maker in new delhi at that time didn't understand the seriousness of the matter and chosen this artificial border. The result is burma is devoted from its main market for its woods and rice and North east india was cut of from sea and south east asia. Result is neither burma nor North east india could develop and insurgency in last 70 year's.
