I always love seeing railways that keep the old steamers like this, even if they never run again. I just love the history.

2:06 I'm glad you managed to find an ALCO-Built one! Most of the other locomotives were probably built in the UK! I hope that MacArhtur finds a good home!

A lovely collection of locomotives, especially the MacArthur 2-8-2s. They hold a special place in my heart as some came to my home country of Malaysia, but sadly none of those we received survive. I hope work is done to preserve the one shown here!

Sadly, the current takeover in Myanmar by the military regime has meant a stop to tourism and probably means the end for these steam locomotives ..... Andy

It's doubtful any of these will be saved. There are hundreds of steam locos slowly rotting away all around the world ... far too many to save! Andy

That's my pleasure Stevie. Thanks for your comment. Barry Island, of course, were all officially scrapped. These are still technically on the stock of Myanmar Railways. Doubtful they'll ever be used again though. Andy

The steam locos at Barry were all withdrawn from British Railways but surprisingly few were scrapped. Many have been completely restored and are running on preserved railways all over the country@@AndyDandanFisherSteam

I think that's probably unlikely. It only takes a wealthy American to come along with a few thousand to save that Alco though! Mind you, it's metre gauge ... not ideal for running in the US. Andy

@@AndyDandanFisherSteam I'm sure they could be regauged like the "Russian" Decapods were when they were stranded in america when the bolshiveik revolution happened and americaln railways had to buy the 200 plus surplus locos. One of the like 2 or 3 remaining is operational at the Illinois railway museum.

It is a military state Michael. However, they're desperate for tourists. We bring in foreign currency. Access is easy and getting a visa is far easier than for China, for example. Thank you for your kind comment. Andy

@@AndyDandanFisherSteam Here in the USA we've got a lot of steam locomotives restored with more on the way. Occasionally one is put in revenue service to test it, but it's 99% excursions. At least they're preserved and operable. As you know we've got some of the biggest in the world. UP's working on a Big Boy.

@@AndyDandanFisherSteam The locomotives burma has stuffed away are fascinating, even if most are not operable. I noticed one was made by ALCO during WWII. They built UPs Challengers and Big Boys as well as many, many others.

@@1940limited I was planning a trip to the USA in May to see 4014 at Ogden but it's become clear that the Golden Spike Celebrations are going to be a complete circus with every steam fan and there kids and their grandkids there! I've decided to hold off and try to catch the Big Boy later - maybe on a freight charter, when all the fuss has died down a little. Andy

@@1940limited This Alco is a USATC MacArthur supplied during WW2. It's a good candidate for some US enthusiast to repatriate .... if you can find a metre gauge line to run it on!! Andy

Hi, you are so wrong in your assessmennnnnt of surviving steam locos from Barry Island as can be seen on a comprehensive report on Wikiepedia. Well over 200 survived, many of which have been completely restored and running on resored railways throughout Britain. There may also be some duplicates available to rich Americans
