He did a great job with varying applicable styles and put them together seamlessly making it a mini composition of a one bar sample- really compelling presentation. It makes it so much easier to distinguish the distinctive sound each (pedal brand) is going for at the same tuning levels. What a boss!:)

The Big Muff and the MXR Bass Fuzz consistently had the best tones throughout all five demos, followed closely by the Duality. They retained the low end ridiculously well while maintaining note clarity. The Joyo was surprisingly not that bad given its price and that it's designed for guitar. The Hartke was thin-sounding and muddy at the same time.

I would probably go for the Hartke or the Aftershock, both sounded very consistent. The Hartke seemed to have a personality of its own, very musical and "punchy" so to speak. The Aftershock seemed the king of versatility for me, because apart from the fuzz mode, which works incredibly very well in comparison to actual "fuzz-only" pedals, it also has two other modes. Mindblowing really.

The Terminal sounds like it would nail the "Time is Running Out" sound. Out of all these I think the TAFM and the EHX held their own the best across these tests but I think the Aftershock was kind of undersold since it has so many options that sound a lot better than the stock fuzz tone.

Firstly, great starting point in the sound! Hartke seems interesting for such low price! Big Muff just sounds very full, what I like. Here's my inital ranking, didn't analyze too much these. Electro-Harmonix Nano Bass Big Muff Pi - You just can't go wrong Darkglass Duality Fuzz - New big muff? Maybe bit pricy.. Hartke HF44 Bass Fuzz - For the price very nice! Low-end loss was bad though.. You'll need to hook Boss LS-2 or some blending option to this Way Huge Conquistador Fuzzstortion - Just a right amount of old schoold glitch and fuzz MXR m84 Bass Fuzz Deluxe - Solid fuzz choice. smallsound/bigsound Team Awesome! Fuzz Machine - Not as solid as MXR to me.. Joyo Voodoo Octave Fuzz - I think this should be higher than MXR, good value! Source Audio Aftershock Distortion - Weird digi-glitch sounds? I think it's Source audios thing? Earthquaker Devices Terminal Fuzz - I didn't like the glitchy sound, I seek those sound more from guitar.. for the price it

Joyo has a neat sound but seems like it would lose too much low end. Same for the Hartke, although less so. The EHX sounds like you would disappear as soon as you kicked it on... typical scooped muff syndrome. Retains low end, yes, but you may as well not even have a fuzz if it can't be heard. MXR sounds pretty decent. I would use it. The Conquistador and Terminal have their moments, but overall their sounds are more niche. The Aftershock and Duality are... what they are. Probably functional sounds, but not what I would go for. Overall, my favorite of this shootout is the TAFM. This is a bit biased because the TAFM is the only one I own... but I also wonder why the gate switch was on for the entire demo? Though, regardless, I feel like its versatility was pretty well demonstrated.

Very nice fuzz on bass shootout! The first guys I heard effectively use buzzy bass were Mel Schacher of Grand Funk and Tim Bogart of Vanilla Fudge in the later 60s (yes, I'm an ancient) - both were probably just heavy overdrive as the growl was rich with plenty of bottom to do the work of bass! Squire came along with his BrassMaster bite (which was bit much for me, but killer for him!) And Geezer Butler and Bootsy and Larry Graham and so many more - and then Chris Wolstenholme of Muse stood out from the crowd! I think of all these sounds when I test bass fuzz effects. And I always try to find a pedal that can let my Ric bass ring through, but also add a nice overdriven guitar sound along with the base sound - a hard goal to find! I like the Hartke pedal best - rich, full and not just another angry mosquito!

The Hartke is it's own thing, sounds like a great mid range to play leads, the others all scoop the mids, this is the TS9 of fuzz bass pedals.

Not even knowing they went up in price as you went... I thought the voodoo and team awesome were the most versatile and solid (however i suppose that is due to their limited scope)... the "aftershock" and "terminal" being the most interesting soundwise....with versatility over the course of what was presented ...although... Big muff has a solid sound too, I heard some muted tones - which could have been slight finger falls breaking the signal?....- i guess it depends on how your ear falls into the sound. Because you can add on with various compressors etc, - do sculpting as you go and build...i know this is an older post but- man great presentation! Very inspiring!
