Part of why its important to check (vs water) on a schedule: a lot of people will say plants use up less water in the colder months and need to be watered less frequently. . . . . But I've found where I live you need to water the plants more frequently in the winter! The plants don't use the water up any faster from being more active, but in winter where I live the air gets so so so dry that the water evaporates out of both the soil and the plant itself much faster.

Hi Marsella, Great comment. Thank you. Watering frequency varies throughout a year. The soil does dry out faster when the heat is in use. Green Cheers & Thank you for watching 🌱

That’s so true. I found my pots drying up faster in the winter because the air is so dry. I had to give some plants a little extra in between waterings.

I am new to plant parenthood and I had a monstera that was growing wildly, I potted up recently using the recommended soil and for the first week after potting up the plant seemed to be doing well. It now has some yellow leaves. I accidentally used fertilizer when I repotted and I think I was supposed to wait a while for this step. I also see light mold on top. I scraped it off this morning and I am going to areate the soil just like the video and hope that helps. I want to try leeching the soil but since I think it might be too much moisture I'm thinking of letting the soil dry out and then leeching the soil the next time I water it. I'm also buying one of those moisture meters. I really want to have success with this monstera. I've been obsessed with them and I'm sad it's not doing so well right now. Thanks for creating the videos. It helps give some idea of what to do to take care of my monstera.
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants Жыл бұрын
Hi Edna, Mold is the sign of overwatering :) I am sure that once you establish a proper watering frequency for your Monstera plant, it will stabilize and get better! To help the soil to dry faster, aerate it once a week until it is dry enough and the plant is ready for a drink. Most of potting mixes already have fertilizer mixed in it and you do not need to feed your plant right away. Here is my video about when and how to fertilize plants: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2HCk5ebp7uGgNk Don't worry too much about this one time of adding the fertilizer :) I would also recommend using the soil moisture meter to establish a proper watering for your plants. Here is the video about how to use this tool: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYbdi6Wun66Lea8 Green Luck & Thank you for watching 🌱

New subscriber here! I noticed you were demonstrating on your Aralia Fabian. I am having SUCH a hard time finding out specific information on them and I need help! I have had mine for four years with no problems at all. All of the sudden, the actual bark on the stems and certain areas of the stump are squishy and falling off when I touch it! I repotted it, trimmed all roots that looked like they had potential rot in fungicide, and tried my best to remove the stems affected. I'm wondering if you think there is anything else I can do for my baby? I'm not a pro, but I've been working with plants for years, so I am quite knowledgeable on steps to take, common diseases, pests, etc. But I've never seen this! Any help or insight would be much appreciated!
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carly, Thank you for watching 🌱 I am sorry to learn that your Aralia plant is struggling:( Aralias are not very forgiving if they don't get proper light, drainage, and water. The soft but dry stems might mean that the roots' parts have died due to under-watering. If the stems are soft and the roots were mushy, brown, you might have a rotting problem due to lack of drainage /overwatering. - Make sure the plant is close to the natural light source. Partial or filtered sun is best! My plant grows happy next to an east-north window. It does not get much sun, but it is in the brightest spot of that room. Here is the video about my Aralia: bit.ly/38gagyB - Keep it away from heat/Ac and cold drafts. - Pot should have drainage. Also, make sure the pot is not too big for your plant. If the pot is too big for your plant, too much soil holds more than needed moisture for longer than needed - this can lead to root rot. - Use a porous potting mix like this bit.ly/2SumKuf - Water generously to saturate the soil well when the soil is dry 3/4 way down. *** I use the soil meter bit.ly/2yuXVpc to help me to establish a proper watering frequency. I water my plant when the meter reading (as deep as I can test the soil without hitting the planter bottom) is in the 4-5 zone. Since the plant has many healthy roots, with proper adjustments, it should recover. Be patient as the recovery might be slow. Green Luck!

Love the videos...do you think using an aqua globe is ok for plants like Alocasia...pothos...and some others...this is for regular use not just when away on vacation
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants Жыл бұрын
Hi Kim, Aqua Globes are great if you are away for a week or two but, in my opinion, should not be used as the default watering method. Cons of using self-watering globes for houseplants: - Not all plants need the same amount of water. For plants that need less water, watering globes might give these plants more water than they need, leading to root rot. - You need different size globes for different types and sizes of plants. - Risk of clogging it with the soil and mold growth. Soil can clog the pipe's opening, which means the water won’t be able to get into the soil. When these become dirty, without a proper cleaning, the mold will grow. - Frequent cleaning is a must! Best to clean each time it gets refilled. Be very careful when cleaning glass aqua globes as the glass pipe breaks easily. Green Cheers & Thank you for watching 🌱

I just replanted my fiddle leaf fig because I was getting brown leaves and thought perhaps there was root rot. The roots didn’t seem that bad though. Do I need to cut off every leaf that has brown spots (it might look pretty bare)? I’m now using a moisture meter. Any other advice?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristoffer, Thank you for watching 🌱 This plant is very finicky. :) It is sensitive to improper watering, lack of drainage, drastic temperature changes, cold exposure Brown spots can also be the sign of bacterial infection or pest issue. Meter will help you to establish a better watering routine. - Make sure the pot has drainage and the potting mix you used offers a good porosity. - Examine leaves well for pests/mites. Here is our Pest Issues Playlist link: bit.ly/39hK59Z - If most of a leaf is browning, you should cut it off. - If just edges/tips turning brown, you may simply trim it off. How to trim leaves: bit.ly/36BaEqW - These plants enjoy lots of bright, indirect sunlight throughout the day. Green Luck!! I hope your plant will recover and grow many new leaves for you.

SOS!! I am propagating a Cherry Tree. I have 6 trees (month- month and a half after clipping) that were doing wonderful and starting to get leaves and blossoms. They are indoors so I repotted them to have their own containers. I packed the soil too much resulting in it not drying. My blossoms started dying and leaves started wilting. I immediately used chopsticks to airate and even added some dry potting mix to help as well (two days ago). Leaves are still wilted but the soil is finally not wet after a week of it continually being moist prior to overwatering symptoms. I am wondering how will I know if this worked or if I need to repot. When should I water again? Should I have them in sunlight/grow light while recovering?

What an informative video! I have both liked and subscribed. I'm guilty of both on my Echeveria Perle von Nurnberg and my jade plant (Crassula ovata). I REALLY overdid it with the PVN and it showed. Leaves dropped and for a while, I thought I had lost it. The central core of petals at the top still look viable, however, and I'm still holding out hope, Thanks for the advice on the chopsticks. I don't have any, so I guess wooden pencils will have to do. I have yet to purchase a water/moisture measuring instrument, however. Thanks next on my list. @Mycityplants
@Mycityplants Жыл бұрын
Hi! The top soil dries out first as as it is exposed to the open air. If the lower level of the soil of your Philodendron plant stays wet for too long, you may aerate the soil to help it to dry faster. Make sure that your Philodendron plant is in a pot that is just 2-3 inches larger than the root system. If the pot is too big, the soil will not dry out as fast as needed and the roots will start to rot. + pot should have drainage! If the plant is already declining, take it out of the pot, clean the roots, cut any rotting roots and then repot your plant in a fresh potting mix. Soil moisture meter will help you to establish a proper watering frequency for your plant. Here is the video about how to use this tool: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYbdi6Wun66Lea8 Green Cheers & Thank you for watching 🌱

Thx 4 gr8 tutorial Allow me 3 Qs 1. Moisture meter Should I insert as deep as I want to see it has dried out? i.e. if Aglaonema with shallow roots in 14cm height pot, and I insert the hygrometer 5cm then detected a dry indicator then deeper to 10cm detected medium moisture level, isnt this misleading? Same for succlucents with shallow roots 2. Bamboo stick Can I keep a bamboo stick in each pot and lift it to check its sticking residues and darker wet colour is at which level? Can this be a way in order to avoid cutting thru roots or hurting a zz rhizome etc 3. Non relevant Zz rhizome with roots and without stalk, can it be a propagation project? I potted it in light aerated soil, covered slightly, but struggling whether keep it moist as in propagation? Or dry as in zz watering Thanks..ss (million ssss)

Hello Bassem, Thank you for watching 🌱 1. Moisture meter Should I insert as deep as I want to see it has dried out? - Here is the video about how to use this tool: bit.ly/3TI2sMb 2. Bamboo stick Can I keep a bamboo stick in each pot and lift it to check its sticking residues and darker wet color is at which level? Can this be a way in order to avoid cutting thru roots or hurting a zz rhizome etc? - Yes, you can keep a wooden stick in the soil and use it to determine if the soil is dry or wet. Best to use something like chopstick as bamboo has not as porous surface. 3. Non relevant Zz rhizome with roots and without stalk, can it be a propagation project? I potted it in light aerated soil, covered slightly, but struggling whether keep it moist as in propagation? Or dry as in zz watering - When propagating, don't let the soil dry out completely but do keep it on a drier side! Green Cheers & May your plants grow happy and healthy!

Hi Yordan, Maris is saying if the roots are all rotted, you may cut stems and propagate them. Depending on what type of plant you have, you may propagate in soil or water. Thank you for watching 🌱

Hey, I need help... my Montera Deliciosa has some brown and yellow surrounded leaves but there is another leaf which has some brown crusty dry tips which is a sign of underwatering. Can you please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rameez, Thank you for watching! 🌱 Sounds like you need to establish a better watering routine. The signs suggest that either your soil has gone much too dry, or you plant has stayed wet for too long :) Make sure pot has drainage, the plant gets enough light, keep away from Heat and AC, and water when the soil is dry 3/4 way down. *** I strongly recommend getting the Soil Moisture Meter. This tool will help you to understand when your plant is ready for a drink to avoid over or under watering. If in US- Meter can be purchased here: bit.ly/2yuXVpc Green Luck! 🌱

@@Mycityplants Hey it's me again... I've taken out the Monstera from it's pot and I washed the roots to check the roots if they're healthy and I've seen root rot. I removed it and pot in a smaller pot cause it lost some roots.... And I've noticed it was in a much bigger pot that it needed to be maybe that was the reason of root rot? So I've repoted it into a size smaller pot with dry/moist soil and I've pruned the rotted roots... should I water it now or let the roots heal first? And please tell me what to do next cause I'm so sad that I've almost killed my plant...😭 I'm such a bad plant parent😭😭😭😭

Maybe that could be a good guide to watering, to water the plants you have indoors when it does rain outside then you're directly following nature.
@CameliaSong
@CameliaSong 3 жыл бұрын
That logic doesn't apply because indoor plants are in different environments than outdoor ones, especially if you consider the ones planted straight into soil, without a pot

I’m surprised nothing is mentioned about self watering pots as a solution for overwatering.
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you for your comment. Yes, Lechuza self-watering pots do prevent overwatering but if not used properly plants do get over-watered. The water reservoir should not be filled as soon as the plant drank all the water from the reservoir. Dry phase (time between refilling the reservoir) is very important. The soil needs to have a chance to dry out. Here is the link to our video about how to properly water plants in Lechuza planters bit.ly/3bWSmRs Green Cheers 🌱

Hello Daniel, Droopy leaves can also be the sign of the watering issue. Best to take the plant out, examine the roots, trim any damaged roots, repot the plant in a fresh soil, make sure the pot has drainage and the plant is getting a good light exposure. Green Cheers 🌱

Hi Leon, Wilting can be the result of under or over-watering. Always test the soil before watering the plant. Drainage is very important! When watering, make sure to use enough water so it can reach lower roots. * Get the soil moisture meter: mycityplants.com/collections/indoor-plant-tools/products/soil-moisture-meter This tool will help you to test the soil deeper and establish a proper watering frequency. Hi Zaina, Thank you for watching! 🌱 Vessels without drainage put a plant at the higher risk of being overwatered. - Test the soil ALWAYS before watering as deep as possible to make sure it is dry enough, and the plant is ready for a drink. - Do not to use too much water (just enough to reach lower roots) to avoid having roots sitting in water/as water has no where to go. - Aerate the soil (as I show in my video) frequently. I hope this information helps. ***To make it easier for you and your plant, I would recommend to re-pot the plant in a proper pot. 😀
