I was Born & Raised a GM guy (Pontiac Chevrolet Buick Oldsmobile) but these early MOPARS were the KING of the Racetracks & the Streets!!! 🏁🏁

When I was a kid, these cars were still around. I remember thinking how ugly they were, but now I wish, I had one. I would love to have the green one. Super cool, My mother drove a Dodge Dart for years, it was super dependable. My dad did all the maintenance on it. Man have times changed. Nice to see these old cars.

Fremont drag strip, early 1960s: my buddy came to race his '57 Ford and they had a couple of these white Mopars there and they looked like grannymobiles until they blasted down the strip, turning mid to high 12 second runs. My friend and I looked at one another, absolutely flabbergasted at the quickness of these cars. Wow! 413 became an important number to us that day.

My dad bought a LOADED, white on white, with red striping and red interior, '64 Sport Fury convertible brand new and financed it to the hilt. It had the 426 Street Wedge and TF727 with console shifter. The next door neighbor's brother had just bought a new but leftover blue '63 Dodge with 383 and pushbutton automatic and paid in cash. The neighbor kept trying to buy/trade for dad's convertible and after about 6 months, he finally made an offer dad couldn't refuse. He took the convertible AND its payments and gave dad his PAID-FOR Dodge AND $900.00 cash (which was a TON in 1964/65). About 10 years back, I ran into an old guy at a cruise night that had an identical Sport Fury to what dad's had been. I have no idea if it was the same car but I guess it could have been. The old guy claimed there were only 7 Sport Fury convertibles in that color combo, with the Street Wedge and auto on the floor. I have no idea if there's any truth to that. I think ALL Sport Furies had a console shift but I could easily be wrong about that. After my parents divorced in 1973, my older brother got his first car, a blue '63 Dodge. No, it wasn't the one dad had earlier but it was nearly identical. It looked exactly the same but my brother's car had a 318 Poly in it. 5 years after that, mom bought a '64 Belvedere that was also a 318 Poly. All those cars are long since gone and I've wanted a '63 Dodge OR '64 Plymouth my whole life but I've never had one.

1962/65 Mopars are the cars that got me loving Mopars as a kid my uncle had a 62 330 with a 413 street wedge with dual quads and I remember that car shaking me at first I was afraid of the car because of the sound and how it use to shake my body and no other car did that to me and once I was use to the car I was in love with it my uncle would take me for a ride in it and use to make me lock to the back of the seat it was so much fun and to this day I am in total love with them even more with the Max Wedge cars

Those early sixties Mopars were ahead of their time in performance, the body styles improved in the mid to late sixties, if you can find one today you’ll have a true factory hot rod !

The guy who was responsible for those gawd awful designs was Virgil Exner. The '61s were eyesores, he was fired prior to '62. The designs were cleaned up a bit for '62 and a lot more for '63. By '65 they were good looking cars and by '66 the Dodges and Plymouths were the best looging cars on the road, at least I thought so. I've been bleeding Mopar Blue since I can remember, and I am now 75. One big highlight for me was when Richard Petty cleane up at Daytona in '64.

Really the first American muscle car was the 1955 Chrysler 300...the first American car with a 300 horsepower factory rating since Duesenberg in 1928. In 1955-56 the hottest V8's from Ford and GM were making about 180 horsepower and the Chrysler 331 Hemi with two 4 barrels was factory rated at 300 horses in 1955 and in 1956 the 354 Hemi with dual quads was rated at 340 horses and there was also an optional 355 horsepower version that was strictly for racing. Also the high performance Dodge D-500 came out in 1956. Between the Chrysler 300 and Dodge D-500 the Mopar teams completely dominated NASCAR in 1955-56. Ford and GM finally had to use superchargers and fuel injection to be able to compete with the Mopars in 1957

The GTO was the car that brought it all to the mainstream. Everybody who knows anything about cars knows it wasn't the first. But if it wasn't for the GTO, muscle cars would've stayed in the background. With only us power hungry gearheads knowing about them. Which, when you think about it, probably would've been better for us. Cars like the GTO got the insurance companies involved. Ruined everything. Damn GTO
@matrox
@matrox 4 жыл бұрын
Well actually the first was a 49' Olds Rocket 88. But the first really race ready were the super stocks. The problem do to styling they were not that popular with the masses regarding being sporty. That's where the GTO got the upper hand.

My first car was a Belvedere II, Police Special, with a 383 4bbl, Mallory dual point distributor, dual pipes, push button A-727, full instrumentation, including a working clock. Certified speedo. Just what every 16 year old kid needs ! Fully documented. Bought it at the local C/P dealership for $275 in 1974. Fast as a bad case of diarrhea.

I drooled over these cars, like my old 62 Sport Fury two door non post car; 440 powered w/ cable operated 727, 3.91 geared posi that I bought for $300,00! (I turned it into a bracket car) & my older brother Bill's 65 Belvedere II 383 three speed (column shifted) & even w/ a 3.23 posi that car Rocked ! ! ! (He never lost to a SBC on Woodward Ave) at least not that I saw....;)

My 1962 Plymouth Savoy with the 420 hp 413 had a thin rubber mat floor, and the 3-speed on the column, not a Hurst on the floor. 13.5:1 compression. It was white with (no kidding) a brown roof and a brown interior. Bought it from the original owner who had never had it licensed after 6 years. (warranty waiver on the glove box door). I boxed up the engine, put in a warmed over 383, and drove it. Had to "alter" the title to get it registered and licensed. Sold it...bought it back 2 years later, and re-installed the 413 with a 4-speed from a newer car. Rear had the spider gears welded.

I love this selection of cars! They seem to follow a theme of maximum performance with a minimum of comfort and convenience equipment. It seems to me that the closest things to that concept in 2019 are base model pickups. Maybe the base model Wrangler too although, in the case of the Wrangler, the "performance" is not of the drag strip variety. So are there other cars (or trucks) in 2019 that have that same formula of most of the cost being devoted to performance rather than the womb substitute syndrome?

This is very true. I did a lot of street racing back in 1963 to 1966. My prime car was a 1959 Chevy Impala with a built 1962 327 ci with fuel injected cam and heads with solid lifters and 12 to1 pistons a mallory dual point distributor and topped off with 3 Stromberg 97 2 barrel carbs and exhausted by headman headers. I used a 3 speed close ratio chevy 3 speed trans with Hurst floor shift and a 3.50 posi rear end. It dyno at 360 horsepower. It was a real sleeper. The only thing that ever beat me on the street was a 1964 Dodge Polara with a 426 Wedge with a 4 speed and a equalock rear end. Never forget racing this guy twice. He had a reputation that covered all of central Maryland as being unbeatable. The first race I had him out of the whole and in second and third gear by two car lengths. When he pulled his 4th gear, he passed me by two car lengths at the end of the quarter. I could not believe it, so I had to race him again. He did the same thing. I was topped out in 3rd, and in his 4th gear he just walked on by!

my brother had one like the red one it was a 4 door with slant 6 he put on a 4 barrel intake and a holley, it was a 4 door so he took foam spray on insulation and filled in the bumpers to the body and sealed up the back doors took out the back seat made a bed painted it flat black and blacked out the back windows, almost every time he went out in it he got stopped by the cops, never got a ticket for anything about it, it was one ugly car when he was done but it turned heads
