Instead of measuring to get the height for each of the horizontal beams, i would make 2 wood jigs, the exact same as the gap you intend to leave below the beam. as long as your deck beam has been shimmed to level, the beams will all be at the same height with the jigs. the jig would be clamped to the insides of the posts you will weld the beam between. just rest the beam on top of the wood jigs, tac weld, remove the wood jigs, and set them in the next gap. I can usually do this with scraps.

Can i ask you why you DID`NT drill and bolt through the packing stacks?. I would have thought that would be stronger and safer, as the stacks being unconnected may slip and cause distortion later in the build?.

That’s way too much drilling. The cladding will keep the stacks from escaping I imagine, plus the studs will connect the bottom plate to the top plate so it can’t sag or move anyway. In the last of the vid there you can see all the cladding is on.

Nice job, but why not raise the frame off of the deck, grind the area where the spacers will go on the frame and deck, then weld them in place?
@Finn-McCool Жыл бұрын
Perhaps it was not in the budget, or maybe some other reason that I could not anticipate, however it seems that some good quality pipe could have been cut to the right length in order to make the gap under the frame and the mounting bolts would pass freely through.

It would have given you a better seal and more strength to bolt the bottom plate directly against the barge and then vary the height of the wall studs to make the roof and ceiling flat. If your frame twists at all, how it is currently installed, the bolts could shear off.
@teeanahera8949 Жыл бұрын
Without an air gap under the bottom plates it will be a water trap and rust. I think there is little chance of those bolts shearing, they’re a hell of a lot thicker than the bottom plate wall thickness and besides that how is that frame ever going to twist? After the cladding goes on the studs and roof joists have an infinite amount of triangulation.

I don't think it will be a big problem as long as he stays in protected waters, what he is building looks to be similar in proportions to many canal boat homes.
@teeanahera8949 Жыл бұрын
He’s 100% in a river so it’s not as though he can be pushed off course too far. Secondly, it’s his home and he’s not a hobbit so you can’t have head height and 1m tall walls. It is no taller than the majority of boats out there.
@t1n4444 Жыл бұрын
@@daveamies5031 Hmm, experience says otherwise. The sides and ends of the structure represent a significant "sail" and will be most certainly be affected by the wind. In other words we'll soon know as winter draws on ... Will presume we'll see "anchors"/"mud weights" in short order. Either that or a new series entitled "How I raised and refloated my boat". We'll soon see.

I assume that is more of a house boat. So no real estate or 'dirt' taxes but I really don't know how German law works for homes on water.
@t1n4444 Жыл бұрын
@@Finn-McCool 😂😂😂😂 There's ways Google. With luck the German authorities will have an English translation on their Government web site (s). Another issue is insurance of course. The guy mentioned he wants to use his largest vessel as a party boat. That strikes me as "adventurous". Pissed partygoers present plenty of putative problems and of course pissheads and water don't mix. Inevitable that someone falls in or is pushed in or just wants to cool off. It might well end in tragedy. Insurance companies might take a dim view should a tragedy occur and for all we know we know the local marine authorities might want to vessel licenced for such activities as in maximum passengers, life rings etc, etc. We'll know soon enough.

Ref the build design ... to be fair the bloke isn't a shipwright and it does show. The arrangement for the transom, day, off which hang the outboards, is very elaborate perhaps overly so. Some might say it was "designed-as-you-go". That said the bloke is enjoying himself and thus far we'll presume the build has been marine surveyed, signed off as seaworthy and is insurable. It may be once the superstructure is completed a further survey is required to ensure the vessel is stable in very windy conditions. It may be a marine surveyor would want to see any calculations indicating centre of buoyancy, centre of gravity and metacentric height and the rest of it. The Mary Rose could have done with a marine surveyor or three to ensure the weight of the cannon and hundreds of men at arms, some in breast plate armour, standing around on the top deck didn't make the ship inherently unstable. Which it proved to be. Anyway, we'll soon know. PS: in hindsight perhaps a marquee type superstructure would have been easier to engineer. Possibly on a sweltering summer day/evening a marquee might have been just the thing?
