Hi Steve, After watching your videos (1&2) I decided to inspect the countershaft bushes on my Myford and found they had worn considerably. The shaft itself had very little wear so I did not see the need to replace it. To that end I ordered a new set of oil-lite bushes and made up the tooling as per your video for extracting and refitting the bushes.. As you said the bush ODs were slightly up on the original bushes and took no time at all to polish the new ones to the size of the originals ensuring a good fit with minimal fuss. Thanks for taking the time to make a video that is very informative because it certainly saved me a lot of messing around.

Hi Steve, fitted new counter shaft bearing into my super seven on the belt lever side because it was leaking slightly on the inner edge and draining the cup after a while. the old bearing had a hole drilled in the bearing in line with the cup? should there be a hole with these bushes? fitted the new bush and so drilled the hole and leaked worse so fitted old bearing back? Neil

Polite bushes should be pre soaked in clean oil for 24 hrs before fitting ,this lubicates the bush and stops dry running on initial use

Hi Steve. had oil coming out of the small bush on the counter shaft and having to fill the oiler very quickly, so ordered two bushes from Myford. I removed the shaft assembly very slight wear on the shaft but not worried about it. but offering the new bushes on the shaft it seemed that the smaller new bush had more internal clearance than the old one, measuring both New bush internal 22.38 old 22.36 . do you think the new bush will crush slightly when fitted and adopt the correct clearance for the shaft. Neil

Hi Neil, yes the new bushes should crush slightly. Mine were actually too tight after assembly. I had to polish them to get them to size. That meant carefully removing them and polishing on my other lathe. It took quite a bit of work to get them right. Having said that though I didn't buy mine from Myford so I don't know how they may have differed in size to the original.

Hi nice machine I have an ml4 what year is your machine ?

+machining basics Thanks, This one was made in 1947. I have only had it a few months. They are excellent machines. Its a shame Myford are not still making them!

Could you possibly send me the dimensions of the tool you made for pressing/removing the bushes? It look like a very simple but effective way to do the job without introducing trauma to the parts.

Hi Steve, Thanks I will dig the tool out as soon as I get time and list the main dimensions. My Regards Steve

Hi Steve: I recently fixed my ML7 and I got a new axle and new oilite bushes. All good except the shaft has been very tight. And besides being very hard to spin it gets very hot. Do you think this is normal at first and that after a while, it will be smoother and will not be warmed up so much by the pressure? Or I should think that the support was a little bent and that is the source of that pressure and excessive heat. Thanks for your videos

Hi I have just made a new counter-shaft and fitted it with new bushes. I noticed that mine is quite tight to turn and gets quite warm. Also it takes quite a bit of pressure on the oil can to get oil into it. I only use the lathe for short periods at the moment and just keep an eye on it. I have fitted a tachometer as well which gives a quick indication if anything is wrong. As long as its running at the correct speed and not slowing down with the correct belt tension it is fine. Also only use ISO32 hydraulic for lubrication...... If it gets too hot to touch then the bushes may be too tight.?....In my new video about the counter-shaft I explain this better, the bushes should just about be going into the housings without using any tools to push them in, maybe just a light tap with a plastic mallet to push them home.....This stops them compressing too much making the bore too tight for the shaft.... All the supports seem to be a bit bent on these ML7's, but correct adjustment takes it out in operation and doesn't seem to cause any problems.....so I have found....Thanks for watching....Regards Steve

interesting, but how tight were the bushes the first time you fitted them ?
@SteveJordan7 жыл бұрын
+phil bailey Hi Phil they were actually too tigjt to push the spindle through. I had to take tem out a few times to adjust before getting them right. Regards Steve

thanks steve, when you say adjust did you ream them ?
@SteveJordan7 жыл бұрын
phil bailey Hi Phil no I just put them on my other lathe and polished them out with medium emery. It took a while but well worth the patience...

@@SteveJordan Hi Steve, could you please tell me if you polished the bores or the OD? I've just fitted some new bushes and they are too tight. Thanks.

Nice work,To be fair love the ml7 lathe,But as myford said it would never use it in production,Where as the M type lathe was used in production for many years and Incorporated many features in the bench mounted counter shaft to over come this alignment problem there is adjusters for each bush,And please don''t think I'm hating on the ml7,But in my own opinion my ford done them self's no justice with a few design features they changed from the M type..They leaned allot from the M type and should have Incorporated them into the ml7 if not made them better which they did not..I've not seen one ML7...My own opinion...And the countershafts were just rough castings so this is expected.
