Just a quick comment on getting rid of those high spots... I've started using a scraping technique, instead of a file, just using a tool steel blank, of whatever size works, which has 4 nice sharp edges to scrape with, and lets you scrape just the actual high spots, without having to worry about the file making trouble elsewhere on the work... Cheers!

Although I can't blame you for wanting to keep your muscles in tune, 😊 you really could use a small bandsaw and a belt grinder. The bandsaw would be quicker and give a neater cut, and the belt grinder would be quicker and give a much finer finish. 👍

It's not clear what operates the travel stop microswitch. It looks like it is the tip of the scale beam at 10:17 but the beam seems to be fixed to the lathe bed at 6:56, so it doesn't move with the carriage. What am I missing?

In DRO mode the beam is fixed at the end and travel can be measured on the scale. In cut off mode the thumb screw securing the beam is removed and the scale is locked to the beam. Once a cut is taken the work can be measured , the scale zeroed and then the beam is moved by the amount nececessary to give the correct dimension and locked in place.

precipitate hardened stainless isn't as hard as HSS hence the hacksaw cuts it
