How nice to see, people had a general interest in the shows format and his life. Refreshing also to see no-one demading he stand for a political position like today. Better respect then! Glad I was raised during those times.

Some of the questions are obviously silly, but, it was and is vital for celebrities, politicians, and so on to be asked direct questions in front of a live audience. This is lost now thanks to the very mediums I'm typing on. And I was too young to watch my pal Phil or Johnny on TV, but I still feel this way. We need these interactions for our sanity and the security of our republic.

The show was 90 minutes at this point and was later shortened to 60 minutes. I think the show moved to Burbank, California not long after this was taped, maybe 1970 or 1972? Anyone know for sure?
@Rob_Kates8 жыл бұрын
Yes, the show was from New York from 1962-1972 and was based out of Burbank from 1972-1992. Leno did the show from Burbank too. Ironically, Fallon moved it back to 30 Rock in NYC where Johnny started it.
@ApartmentKing666 жыл бұрын
Johnny moved the Tonight Show to NBC Burbank permanently in May 1972 to give the production access to film and TV stars. Actually, Johnny didn't "start" the Tonight Show. (Maybe Rob meant "where Johnny began hosting it.") Steve Allen was the original host when it began in 1953 as a local show on NBC's flagship WNBT in New York. In September 1954, NBC execs put it on the network, coming from the Hudson Theater in New York. When it was moved to 30 Rock, I don't know. In 1956, Allen was offered a Sunday night prime-time gig on NBC, which he took, but continued to do Tonight until in 1957, both shows became too much, so he gave up Tonight to concentrate on The Steve Allen Show (for several times more money and a much larger viewership). As everyone knows, Jack Paar took over until '62, when Johnny assumed the reins.

Without all the money you see less egos and more humanity and decency. Johnny from what I read did some boxing, was a code breaker during WWII and flying planes etc. Very talented and varied skills and interests. The down side of this era is people were more formal and not as relaxed or real hemmed in by the censorship and morality yoke of the Networks. Interesting to watch now in 2021 from a sociology perspective.
