For those of you who never worked with hole saws and aluminum. Big tip drill in reverse and save your wrist and keep the blade cool with water or aluminum liquid lubricant

Thanks for the video! Something to try next time is to get some scrap wood and cut a hole in it with your hole saw then remove the center bit and clamp that piece of wood onto your aluminum and it works as a guide to prevent the hole saw from jumping around.

Thank you very much for this advice, I'm thinking about using a hole saw for my floor cutouts to accommodate the side ribs, seems more than doing with your advice.

If you don't have the centre drill bit for the hole saw, you can always cut through by starting the bit at an angle and then gradually move towards a full hole cut. This method works all the time! Also old wood blades turned the other way also can cut steel plate with a skill saw.

I just got a new 1548 and couldn't wait to get it in the water, so we slugged it through the backyard and through a gate on it's side. Amazing the strength impatience gives you! Watching closely to see how this goes. If I'm lucky I'll have plenty of ideas when we pull it out for the winter!!!!!

Heck yeah, a 1548 is a great platform to build on. I'm really excited to see how this one turns out.

If you don’t have a centering pilot drill, you can hole out a block of wood to use as a guide.

to use a hole saw without the drill bit make a hole in wood first and use that to keep the hole saw stable.

Use the hole saw at a 45⁰ angle til you get a groove to start then take it plumb and it'll stay in place

that's not the live well hole, it's to drain the bilge, not sure how you will drain the water if you plug it? If you want to use your hole saw, first drill into a piece of wood with the center bit in place, then take the center bit out, use the wood as a guide by clamping it over the material you are working on. works well. nice patch.

The hole was plumbed with livewell attachments that I removed prior to the video. I don't think you'd want a bilge pump to exit under the waterline. To drain the boat there's a drain plug next to the hole and the bilge hose will exit higher. Great advice on the hole saw, in hindsight I could have just used the center drill in the aluminum while clamping it down to wood too. I like the wood guide idea I'll try that next time I need it.

Doesn’t the pop rivet have a hole directly in the middle of it?
@mvboutdoors
@mvboutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
No sir, it was a closed end rivet so its watertight with no center hole.

It's round hole, why not just put a bilge plug in it? That would removable and it would seal just fine.
@mvboutdoors
@mvboutdoors Жыл бұрын
I had tried a couple drain plugs but they would not seal, I may end up installing a proper drain plug there but for now this was a quick way to patch the hole.

'Little effort, little materials, and little tools' would be slapping a rubber hole plug into it and walking away.

Thanks for sharing! Looks like that will work sure. I would like to use the Fast Cure 5200 for some insulation hangers on the underside of my boats fiberglass engine hatch. I'm replacing the OEM 2 1/2" egg crate foam with the same type of new OEM. I have a question if you don't mind? Does the 5200 have enough grab for me to mount these to the underside of the hatch leaving them suspended until they're cured? Thanks again.... Great job!! 👍😊
@mvboutdoors
@mvboutdoors Жыл бұрын
That's a tough one, 5200 is extremely tacky and it might be enough to hang there on its own but I would try to support either way for the best grip.

Hello there I just bought an aluminum boat and have holes in the transom. however the transom is wood incased in aluminum there are several holes and the wood is not rotten but like dust around the hole area I think it’s mostly from sealant and will of course clean it all out of the hole and go from there. my question is to you should I put anything in between the two plates I will put on in similar fashion to you my transom is probably about 1 1/2” to 2” thick . again I ask should I put anything in between the two plates I don’t think a rivet will work to hold the two plates that far apart either so I will have to rely on 5200 ? or can I use JB weld ?
@mvboutdoors
@mvboutdoors Жыл бұрын
You can still do the pop rivet if there is wood behind the aluminum, you would drill slightly into the wood enough for the rivet to seat then seal it up the same way with silicone. I wouldnt overthink small holes like that when closed end rivets seal them so well. Now if you are trying to seal up old mounting holes or larger holes, I would run a bolt/washer through it with silicone to seal it or silicone a plate over it.
