Great video, I have the same boat, how do the trim tabs help with the ride?
@NormanGooch9 ай бұрын
Adam, The trim tabs do work well on this boat. It helps the boat get on plane faster. It also increases the stability of the boat helping with the rocking back and forth at higher speeds. Thanks for watching my video! Norman

where can I get the same red tool cutter you used to cut the zip lock bag from?
@NormanGooch2 жыл бұрын
The Skil Cordless 4V Electric Scissors I used in the video is no longer available. Skil discontinued the 4v model and updated it to a detachable 12-volt battery system. I now use the WORX 4V ZipSnip Cordless Electric Scissors, it is just like the Skil model they used to sell. Here is a link on Amazon if you are interested: amzn.to/3p53Eew Thanks for watching my video. Norman

Hi Norman! Would this methodology work on a laser sailboat deck with nonskid gelcoat? I have 2 holes from prior equipment (removed before I bought the boat). Thanks! You're videos are great!!
@NormanGooch3 жыл бұрын
Kelly, Yes you can repair non-skid gelcoat holes using the same method. The difference would be if you need to preserve the non-skid pattern. If the holes are small enough you may be able to repair without breaking the pattern. If the holes are in contact with the pattern due to placement or size, you will need to take additional steps to either use a pre-made skid pattern mold or make your own to bring the deck surface back to the original look. Hi sir, what the best sealant to use when drill holes for transducer?
@NormanGooch3 жыл бұрын
I suggest you use 3M 4200 Fast Cure - White - Polyurethane Adhesive/Sealant for the transducer installation. This adhesive/sealant cures fast and forms a watertight seal between joints and hardware. The sealant chemically reacts with moisture and forms a flexible, watertight, weather-resistant seal. It remains permanently flexible and can be used above or below the waterline. This sealant remains elastic and does not harden like 3M 5200. Unlike 3M 5200, 3M 4200 allows you to remove parts without damaging the components or the fiberglass surface. I have used this product for several years and it works great. You will have no problems with water penetration if the sealant is applied properly. You can buy 3M 4200 at most marine stores, Amazon, and sometimes at Home Depot. Hope this helps Thanks, Norman

Hi is it possible to cut the front of a fibreglass car shell and rejoin another front end
@NormanGooch3 жыл бұрын
Depending on the weight and if an extension is added to the front frame.. If so, you will have to reinforce the frame with additional front end and axle strength. Thanks Norman

Carb cleaner works great for 5200 when wet, not sure when dry. I use MEK most of the time. Not to be confused with MEKP.
@NormanGooch4 жыл бұрын
MEK is an excellent solvent to use as well to help loosen adhesives, remove wax, etc. I never tried carburetor cleaner on wet or dry 5200. Thanks for the tp. I use Unheasive mainly because it is safe to use on fiberglass gelcoat. However, it takes longer to turn the dry 5200 into a soft and liquid state, plus you have to use a scraper and carefully remove the adhesive. Thanks Norman

@@NormanGooch next time you get wet 5200 on your hand or on gel, try carb cleaner its amazing and if your using it to wipe the area like after thru hull install it does not effect cure.

I actually cut the scene time in half from the original video....Love cutting plastic bags! Thanks for watching Norman
@brian1715 Жыл бұрын
Doing the bags and waiting 30 or 40 minutes it’s not necessary. In a real life situation. When you work in a shop you only get 30 minutes to fix some thing like this, so it just takes too long. Just use a razor blade and some acetone to clean it off you’re going to be gel coating over it anyways. another thing is everybody who actually works in the industry doesn’t use 5200. It’s just overkill and not serviceable for something like a ladder that may be removed. You can just do 4200 or 4000 UV. Way easier to work with .
@NormanGooch Жыл бұрын
Brian, Please note that the video instruction is not meant for experienced fiberglass experts who are well-versed in repairing fiberglass and gelcoat. It is not intended for those working in a repair shop, who have access to unlimited tools, materials, and other resources to make repairs and complete jobs within strict time constraints. This video is intended for boat owners with little or no experience working with fiberglass and gelcoat repairs. It aims to help them achieve professional results without having to pay high labor costs at fiberglass repair shops, which can be upwards of $200 per hour. The information you provided about the 5200 adhesives is accurate. These adhesives are not recommended for usage on parts that may need to be removed in the future. They create a permanent bond which is difficult to break once it cures. Moreover, removing it from gelcoat can be challenging and may cause damage. In the video, the boat's previous owner used 5200 to attach the ladder. Removing 5200 adhesive is a difficult task even when using a razor and acetone. Applying heat with a heat gun can also be challenging. The risk of cracking or deeply scratching the gelcoat is high. Experienced professionals can repair any damage caused during the removal process. However, if you have little or no experience, avoiding damaging the gelcoat while removing the adhesive is best. Taking 30-60 minutes to soften 5200 first, then using a plastic scraper and a de-bonding agent to remove it is a safer option. Thanks for watching my video Norman

Use gloves with acetone. I didn't and the skin on all ten of my fingertips has been peeling off for the last four days, and its not done yet. Yes, as I type this comment. Trust me, it sucks. Wear some nitrile gloves. 😖

@@NormanGooch Norman, I used the acetone to remove some black Sharpie marker off a plexiglass window (using a paper towel). I didn't use much, and it took the marker right off. But a couple of days later the problems began. My exposure was seemingly fairly mild. Anyway, it had nothing directly to do with your instructions or video, I was just adding the comment to hopefully save someone a similar experience.
