4 also sounds like "Death" in Chinese, and many buildings with Chinese owners back in my home country tend to skip the 4th floor altogether, or replace it with '3A'. Funnily enough, when I went to China to study I find many buildings using the 4th floor as usual, so there is that.

honestly if their problem was it sounds like "death" I think they should have just renamed that number years ago, then they wouldn't have to avoid saying it, and they wouldn't have to be all superstitious about it or be afraid of it. Buildings in my country have the 4th floor (4 elevator button) and its all fine lol.
@allyh7075 Жыл бұрын
You're right, it's way easier to just rename...an entire number...I'm sure that wouldn't cause utter chaos. (as if that wasn't the most complicated thing in the world anyway, it also comes from a Chinese character, so you'd also have to rename number 4 in every language with Chinese roots 😂)

Whatever it’s kanji or hanja around 2/3 words of Japanese and Korean were from Chinese so you shouldn’t be surprised to find that (and some coincidence of words can also be found in Malaysian Vietnamese and maybe other East-Asian languages that were once influenced by Chinese language--just like how Latin/Roman influenced western languages,it’s just that in the east Asia Chinese was Latin + Roman

In Taiwan, “four” also sounds similar to “death” in Mandarin, which is a bad omen so in my apartment, the number 4 elevator button is also omitted. Thus we don’t actually have a fourth floor lol. The elevator button goes up to 27, but the apartment only has 26 floors, excluding the basement. Death: 死/sî Four: 四/sì Same pronunciation but different intonation.

I live in Hong Kong and I see this a lot. 四 (four) is pronounced si (with the up accent) which is similar to 死 (death) pronounced si (with the up down accent). But here, we either have the fourth floor or completely skip it like 1st 2nd 3rd and thrn directly 5th. Sometimes they even erase any floors with the number 4 in it like 47, 24 etc. One funny thing I saw once is that this building had the 4th floor, but every floor ending in 4 was skipped. Even the floors that started with 4 were not erased. Funny. Edit: four is si with the down accent not up sorry

Some building in Indonesia skip naming 4th and 13th floor too to attract wider tenant's ethnicity/nationality. Usually the 4th floor is named with other number/letters, like 3A or M. Some building just skip numbering 4 and 13 altogether, so the 5th floor will be 4 level high from the ground. I've never seen F floor tho 😂

In japanese, chinese and korean 4 means death so even in my apartment they dont have any floor with 4, and also theres no 13th floor either. There are 55th floor in my apartment but the 40-49 are missing lol. And sometimes yes we change 4th floor to 3A and 13th floor to 12A. Floors with number 4 and 13th floor just dont sell well so developers avoid them altogether. Though... I lived on 4th floor in taipei so 😂
@barbiebarbie1813Күн бұрын
"四 4 " does not mean death in China. It is the pronunciation of Chinese;. In Chinese Feng Shui 風水, the pronunciation is similar, so it became not bad. But the Japanese and Koreans copied China' s behavior indiscriminately. They thought this "4" was related to "death". This is a pure plagiarism issue.
