To that list, I would add: Do NOT become obsessed with grammar, especially in the early stages of a language program! If you focus on grammar, rather than listening/speaking, you will become bogged down in details that will hinder you acquisition of a language. You will learn rules of grammar as you progress in your study.

Such great tips! Consistency is extremely important, but a lot of people don't get that. Do not give up. Learning a foreign language can be hard, having a strong accent or making a lot of mistakes is okay. Listening to native speakers helps a lot to improve our pronunciation. That's how we almost don't really feel an accent when I speak a foreign language. Korean is my next language!! Thank you for that great video. Take care 🙂

my biggest issue with self study is less speaking practice. being a korean adoptee, i grew up with 0 exposure to korean. yet for some reason, koreans ive met like to laugh at me when i make mistakes. because i mostly self studied, im not used to practicing with other people, and so i was really frustrated when i would make mistakes and get made fun of to my face. like wow....its great to see what koreans actually think of a korean adoptee trying to make an effort to reconnect with their heritage.

I really liked this video, high level of grammatical accuracy and clear and succinct communication. Native English speakers often struggle with maintaining a sustained level of clear communication because we get too caught up in the nuances of register and pragmatics, so this was great to see for a change. I might not agree with everything discussed in the video, but all the points were made extremely well. Great job!

This motivated me!! Been studying a language that made me question a lot of times if I'll be able to do it. Last year, I started the basics and then stopped because I got really busy with work. Noticed you say "the very scratch" Just need to say, "starting from scratch" Still impressive of speaking many languages.
@M_SC4 жыл бұрын
She meant from the very “scratchiest”. if “from scratch” is the beginning, the “very scratch”could well mean the very beginning. She has the right to play with and manipulate English as much as a native speaker does. Like, I can call it the beginningest beginning, that’s not “correct” it’s actually more advanced than correct, it’s a creative improvement on the rule.
@kurootsuki33264 жыл бұрын
@@M_SC i mean... I did similar things when I was learning English and experimenting as a child and early teenager, but the trouble with her attempt is that it misuses the words. If scratch here means nothing/bottom of the pit, very isn't a great fit because you're essentially expressing "lots of nothingness" which can be said, but doesn't convey a clear meaning. If she meant scratchiest it does make more grammatical sense, but if the phrase/saying isn't easily recognisable to native speakers it's not necessarily speaking the mainstream language, but creating a niche (perhaps more easily understood by people with her broad linguistic knowledge). It's fine to be inventive but the words have to be used in their proper grammatical form, if the aim is for the general native speaker is to fully comprehend it.
@kurootsuki33264 жыл бұрын
@@M_SC i just don't necessarily see deviating from the norm as automatically being a positive thing, when the most important fundamental of language is the need to communicate meaning.
@Agitatedform4 жыл бұрын
@@kurootsuki3326 I just wanted to reply to say I have heard "from the very scratch" used before. Though it seems to be rather uncommon it has popped up. That could be the usual of English natives just not getting their own grammer and word structure right, but in that case I'd say it's something usable. Mostly because people have been doing that more often nowadays. My native tongue is English if that matters at all.

My mother tongue is English I'm currently in-between A2-B1 in Spanish. Regularly studying at least 30 minutes a day in Duolingo, plus I've started trying to play video games like Skyrim in Spanish and trying to listen to Spanish talk radio stations while driving. I feel like I'm definitely improving. Reading is VERY easy for me, and I can easily read at a B1 level, but can only speak or understand spoken words at an A2 level. I also have a method of writing out vocabulary words on a page with the english and spanish on either side, and going through every so often and seeing if I remember the word. After a week or so, I make a new list and transfer over the ones I didn't remember to the new list. I have just regular notebook paper, usually it's about 20-25 words. Also have tried to dip into Latin, but it is hard to find motivation to do two languages at once. Basically early, early beginner in Latin.

Hope you upload new video about your long journey for learning English especially including the introduce about each level you experienced to get to master English and the way you did at each level to learn timely and efficiently. I have been learning English and Chinese, and I realized that the result/performance of the first foreign language is really important when learning second foreign language. I used to love English very much, but I lost my confidence when I felt and realized that I couldn't get to the level like you.
