Guys, your RGB Master Class series is incredible. I feel like I get a college-level lecture on video signals and outputs every time a new one comes out. Thank y'all for taking the time to research, test, script, shoot, and edit these - these are hands down the best resource for getting the best image quality out of retro games, which is something sorely lacking. I would hazard a guess that the poor upscaling in modern TVs is part of the reason why retro gaming is still a niche community, but your videos are working to dispel myths and improve the quality of all these older games. As a retro gamer myself, I have a deep appreciation for the time, energy, and money that goes into these labors of love, so thank you very much for making these!

Wow guys, words cannot described how great this episode was, well worth the wait. I'm just gonna add a few things regarding controls sine they may be useful for others: 1- Some games were programmed to take advantage of the fact that the SNES/SFC could use multiple controllers. The following GameBoy games can be played 2 players simultaneously when using a Super GameBoy 1 or 2: Battle Arena Toshinden Dragon Ball Z: Goku Hishouden Dragon Ball Z 2: Goku Gekitouden Kettou Beast Wars: Beast Senshi Saikyou Ketteisen Killer Instinct King Of Fighters '95 King Of Fighters - Heat of The Battle Nekketsu! Beach Volley dayo Kunio-kun Nettou Garou Densetsu 2: Aratanaru Tatakai Nettou Real Bout Garou Densetsu Special Nettou Samurai Spirits: Zankurou Musouken Nintama Rantarou GB Nintama Rantarou GB: Eawase Challenge Puzzle Pocket Puyo Puyo 2 Pocket Puyo Sun Power Quest Puyo Puyo Puzzle Nintama Rantarou GB Samurai Shodown SD Hiryuu No Ken Gaiden SD Hiryuu No Ken Gaiden 2 SD Hiryuu no Ken EX Street Fighter II Super Chinese Fighter GB Super Chinese Land 3 Super Chinese Land 1.2.3' World Heroes 2 Jet The following titles can be played with up to 4 players using an SNES/SFC Multitap when using a Super GameBoy 1 or 2:: Bomberman GB (Wario Blast) Bomberman GB 2 (Bomberman GB outside of Japan) Bomberman Collection (contains Bomberman GB 1 & 2) Jinsei Game 2- While raphnet-tech's SNES to GameCube converter is nice, it has one major flaw in my opinion, the button mapping for SNES for when using GBA games. When using any controller where the face buttons form a diamond shape, it's better to use the West buttons (Y for SNES) for action and the South button (B for SNES) to Jump. Raphnet-tech's converter does not allow this in SNES mode, only NES mode which removes the convenient usage of L & R. My alternative is to use a basic SNES to GameCube converter that you can by for cheap on ebay or Amazon and an SNES Power Plug, a 3rd party device that was made by Tyco in the 90' and licensed by Nintendo. This device will allow you to remap all of the buttons on your SNES controller. For games like Metroid Fusion, you can remap your buttons to jump with B and shoot with Y. While for RPGs like Pokemon, you can remap Start on X and Select on A, giving you DS style Pokemon controls for your GBA games.
@SkyScourgeGod
@SkyScourgeGod 5 жыл бұрын
You could also use a Raphnet N64 to Gamecube adapter as an option for playing on the Gameboy Player. It may sound weird at first to think of using the N64's odd controller for this, but if you really think about it the N64 controller with its D-Pad all the way to the left, the A and B buttons at a slant and the convenient placement of the L and R shoulder buttons may make it a candidate for a really nice controller to use with Gameboy games. If the original controller bothers you still, then you can use the same Raphnet adapter with Retro Fighters new controller called the Brawler 64 which has a much more modern layout.

You missed an interesting one. Goomba Color. It's a Game Boy Color emulator for GBA. It allows you to play GB/GBC games on a Game Boy Micro. But what's most interesting is that it supports Game Boy Color enhancements AND Super Game Boy borders at the same time. You can play LInk's Awakening DX, in full color with the SGB border and on original Nintendo hardware!

Thank you for this video. I never knew about Swiss and GBI until I saw this. I now have a Game Boy Player running GBI-SR at 240p over RGB SCART (sync over composite for guaranteed compatibility across devices). Managed to get the config files to default to my desired settings and set GBI-SR to autoexec so it's as simple as boot and play like as if it's stock. One handy thing about being a PAL gamer is having a HDTV with SCART still supported and actually upscaled rather well without the need for a separate upscaler device (thank you Panasonic).

This video was absolutely outstanding! It has EVERYTHING! You guys rock! EDIT: I like how 1:1:56 you guys show the original Gameboy Pocket before the battery indicator light was added. I still have my yellow version that came without it and hastily wrote down every Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle II level code I could before the batteries died, much to my parents' chagrin; the only perceivable indicator was a decrease in contrast as the batteries came close to dying. My little brother, of course, got a red GBP that included the indicator light, though he eventually gave it to me since he's not a retro gamer.

Holy crap that HDMY Boy thing looks amazing! I really hope the developers finish development and start selling the things soon! I really like the idea of a Game Boy sandwich, I kinda hope that feature of the prototype makes it to the final build.

Made me mash that sub button this time boys. I gotta say your attention to detail is AMAZING I have enjoyed all of your videos. I've only just recently started down this exact same rabbit hole just to play Super Ghouls n Ghosts on GBA on my game cube. Its a saga in itself, but I want to feel the pain that only a capcom side scroller can give me once more. Keep up the great works and if you're ever in Los Angeles I would love to buy your entire crew a beer. Cheers.

I believe that you missed the fact that some Super Game Boy enhanced games have extra audio effects when played on a Super Game Boy, using the SNES's sound chip.

[Try4ce] Yeah, we acknowledged that there are features besides colors and border, but didn't say what. Since the video was so long as it was, we tried to mostly stick to video-related aspects. Though we went off the rails a few times, like with the Hori controllers.

Wow, this is the most detailed video about Gameboy family of handhelds. I've played GB,GBC,GBA SP,DS and 3DS. I currently own two 3DS XLs, GBC GBA SP and GB player for Game Cube. I haven't done any mods to my handhelds but the mod makes games look really good and crisp. Great video guys keep em coming.

Wow,Tons of great info here! The only one extra thing worth mentioning is the 'monster brain' Aside to being a cheat device, it allows custom pallets for GB games on a real GBC, it can also (attempt) to run GB games in GBC mode with the extra cpu speed As well as stipping Dual mode GBC games back to GB mode, so you could run Say zelda DX or tetris DX with one of the generic gbc pallets (including black&white)!

[Try4ce] Woah that's very interesting, I had never heard of that! It also appears to be very cheap. It seems to be designed for Pokemon games. It works with any Game Boy game, though? I've just never been that big of a fan of the GBC palettes.
@bobdotexe

Yes, it works for just about any gb/gbc game. and it even has a feature that makes it act as a budget 'mega memory card' It's a great device that many people have never heard of! and unlike the SGB, your custom pallets can be saved in the devices (non-volatile memory) I'd really suggest checking out!

I do have to say, this video helped me out a great deal with my Game Boy Player and Super Game Boy needs. I seriously can't wait for later this year when the Hyperkin Retron JR. comes out and you guys can give us the proper review of it as only you do. I hope it becomes the definitive way to play GB, GBC, and GBA games on the big screen.

Great Video! My biggest problem with things like the Game Boy Player is the missing 'Super Game Boy Colour'-Support. A lot of black GBC cartridges have really nice custom borders but the only way to see them is the regular Super Game Boy which isn't able to utilize the additional colour. The Game Boy Player on the other hand gives me complete the complete colour but sadly ignores all SGC contents. So the only way to play 'Game & Watch Gallery 2' with the awesome borders an full colour on my TV is via emulation. Sad...

[Try4ce] Some sort of SD media card reader for GameCube memory slots for starters. Then, your disc-launcher methods are either an Action Replay, or there is a method you can use via Super Smash Bros. Melee, which I am unfamiliar with... should be easy to search for, though.
@TheRealSeiferoth
@TheRealSeiferoth 5 жыл бұрын
paulink you can build your own SD memory card adapter. Or purchase an SD gecko (they were pretty cheap back in the day, not sure if they're still that easy to come by though). Then if you have an action replay, there is a set of codes you can use and instead of swapping discs you just open and close the lid with the action replay disc still inside and it will boot from your SD gecko (or DIY adapter). You need certain files in certain places on the SD card but just Google and you should find what you need.
