For some reason youtube is automatically disabling the comments when I don't want it to... which is why there are so few. I've turned it back on now, so feel free to leave a load of comments to make up for the lack of them

Good call on the gothic opening. I'd never read the books and had no frame of reference for the movies when I was talked into watching the first one. I fully expected Dumbledore and McGonigal to start dueling the moment she transformed from cat to human.

I actually think there is a pretty good parallel for the “it’s not goodbye” line by Dumbledore in the beginning; as Harry and friends are getting on the train at the end of the movie, Harry says “I’m not going home - not really,” which solidifies the idea as Hogwarts as his new home.
@michaelvigil3436
@michaelvigil3436 2 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting because it works good taking this movie as a story unto itself but in the future books/movies they make it clear that the Dursley house is Harry’s true home, it has to be so his mothers magical sacrifice can protect him.

@@michaelvigil3436 interesting! I haven’t read the books so I wouldn’t have known that. I definitely never got that sort of message about the Dursley home across any of the 7 films lol

@@heathwtf I’m the opposite, I’ve read all the books but haven’t watched the movies. I can’t remember exactly when Dumbledore tells Harry this, I think it’s at the end of the Order of the Phoenix. That’s why he was never attacked at the Dursley house, the closest was the park down the street or whatever but the house itself is protected until Harry turned 17.

@@michaelvigil3436 good to know! Yeah in Act 1 of the 3rd film there are major “reject the Dursley’s, their house, and everything about them” themes. Ironically enough I’ve heard the 3rd film is the one that deviates from the books the most.
@michaelvigil3436

@@heathwtf Very interesting, the books definitely never paint the Dursley house as a good home for Harry and they are never nice to him but it’s sort of a technicality that their house works for protection, something about Petunia having the same blood as Harry’s mother or something. I will also say they do heavily imply that Harry prefers Hogwarts and does consider it a home of sorts and in the last book he basically does the same spell his mother does (sacrificing yourself to protect a loved one) and basically protects all of Hogwarts and everyone in it from Voldemort just like the Dursley house was protected.

I personally think there's nothing in the whole series as frightening as when Aunt Petunia says "Only I saw (your mother) for what she was. A fREak." It's five seconds of a totally different, chillingly real kind of danger, like the Shining. There's such a visceral contempt and rage in her voice and eyes, it leaves you with the sudden, strong impression that Harry could have been in real, serious danger around her all that time 😳
@tamarabedic9601
@tamarabedic9601 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! But it's almost balanced with the deleted scene in Deathly Hallows Pt. 1... Petunia in a completely empty house.... spits out: "Do you think I don't know what they're capable of? You didn't just lose your mother that night in Godric's Hollow... I lost a sister.."

"I assume Dumbledore talked to the Dursley's more than just the letter." Ahaha... no... that's like if I had a grenade and I wanted you to take it. I'm not going to tell about it, I'm going to force it into your hands and run away where you can never find me xD the only reason the Dursley's kept Harry was because they thought they could reform him and because Petunia actually did hold a smidgen of love for her sister left.
@jordanking8949
@jordanking8949 3 жыл бұрын
Petunia did talk to Dumbledore before dropping him off, she promised Dumbledore Harrys safety (in the 5th or 6th book idk which one ) as well as explaining the severity of harry being kept there (since he was only safe with blood/family). Dumbledore rings petunia out in the 5th book because they treated harry so poorly.

@@jordanking8949 honestly Petunia is a character I could never understand or sympathize with. My sister is a completely horrible human being (very abusive, long story) but if the chips were down and I came into the guardianship of her metaphorical child I wouldn't let that keep me from loving and caring for them no different than if it were my own, especially so if I got them when they were a baby! how could you wash and cloth and care for someone since infancy and walk away without a drop of love in your heart for that person? It honestly breaks my heart and gets to me even more than the unrelatable evil that Voldemort committed. Most of us can't relate to a murderer, but my gosh, things like Petunia and Harry happen all the time...

@@gracehaven5459 the thing is that she knew Harry was a Wizard too and that was what she hated about Lily most, so she just hated him too unfortunately. It's like the same thing as a homophobic person who hated their sister for being gay and then have to raise their gay child lol get it? Although ppl are born gay and stuff if the person is a homophobe they will hate the kid no matter what. That's the same w Petunia. The only difference to my comparison is that while being gay is seen as a bad thing Wizards would be considered an awesome thing. Hence why Petunia had always been so jealous of Lily. So hate combined w jealousy and u get... well, u get Petunia

Tbh if you had asked me how the first Harry Potter movie starts I wouldn't have ever remembered this scene and would've probably said the breakfast scene. That probably speaks for the scene, it's not amazing and memorable, but it doesn't stand out for being bad, it just does a good job at softly opening the door for what's to come. Great video :)

heh, on the lotr video I think I left a comment talking about how I thought the philosopher's stone prologue also had a lot of the strengths you talked about, though I think I focused on the book prologue (which sets the focus more on vernon rather than on dumbledore). and now here you are! I'm glad you agree, and I'm also glad you were able to explore the topic much more in-depth and much more eloquently than I ever could

Dumbledore didn’t actually talk to Dursleys beyond the letter. He did write to Petunia however when she was a child who had written to him to ask to go to Hogwarts because her sister did too. Which isn’t mentioned in the films I don’t think but makes her more complex, she did really do an flip with her attitude when she really she could not be a witch and wanted as mundane life as possible to run away from her jealousy. Back to Dumbledore, it’s his style just to expect people do what he says like in the prologue conversation and just giving a letter with Harry and not discussing with Dursleys at all (until sixth book which is a confirmation they have only correspondenced with the two letters). Eve n though even buttering Vernon with money could have helped Harry a lot in his childhood. But Dumbledore keeps people at arms lenght and doesn’t really spend much time convincing them.
