Hi, this is PART 2 of a 2 Part video.
This trying to fix' video shows me attempting to fix 2 SEGA Game Gears that I bought from eBay. Both of them were sold as faulty.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

Excellent video as always Vince! Might I suggest you make a "B reel" section or another channel you can upload the same footage without the speed up for those of us that have the extra time to watch it entirely in normal speed. I enjoy learning along with you and hearing your thought process as you go along. Thanks again!

I have one here in the states. It needs the capacitor fix. I'll send it to you free of charge if you want it. Consider it a thank you for the quality content on your channel.

Great work! Regards the lid not going on right - see those gold circles on the left side there, that's often where the caps get in the way. If memory serves the plastic posts on the top part of the case sit over them, so they need to be completely unobscured! One looked like it was just overlapping a little.

Thank you Chris. I did try moving them around a bit but maybe one of them or a leg was still in the way. I didn't have the problem on the other Game Gears so I was wondering if maybe one or two of the caps in this kit on that left hand side was slightly larger than the other kits I bought. I didn't compare them so I am only guessing...they may be exactly the same. As always thanks for your helpful advice, tips and suggestions :-)

Hi Vince. I know this is an old video, but just wanted to thank you for giving me the idea of cleaning my main board with IPA. My game gear wasn’t working, but fired right up after doing this. It’s (at least temporarily) working now. So thanks very much! :)

Great vid as awlays, your reactions when you get something right always make me laugh. Is there going to be any more competition fixes? or other non console fixes like a broken tablet/phone or older toys? i hope so lol. either way, keep up the good work mate.

That is awsome man!!! So you got two to work altogether right? I hope you know you are definitely better than average at repairing things. You should start a little side business repair shop, maybe just for local people in your city. That would be awesome. Very enjoyable to watch you work, great job!!

great job on the gears. watching these videos makes me want to fix mine. my capacitors leaked something fierce, orange/tan junk out the sides of a couple. also at 21:28 what was that sound when you first tried the game. was i the only one that heard that?

At 18:02 yes you are right the electrolyte has leaked if there is a fishy smell when heated. It's possible that only those capacitors were blown but changing the lot doesn't do any harm.

i am a huge SEGA collector and i have the MEGADRIVE 1/2 /NOMAD/modded GG/SATURN and DREAMCAST in my collection including a lot of games, which all of them works fine ;) Original NOT rechargeable batteries like DURACELL PRO have standard like 3000 mAH in them, so you see that even 2500 mAH is a bit low in power ;) succes with your channel. Hope you'll do the mod some time!

You got lucky with a clean and recap, 1 in 4 is about my average, the cap kits are hit and miss - the Panasonic cap kits are a better - re. Cleaning use a fibreglass pen as it gets right in deep and removes the gunk

Oh Vince, you've really started something now lol just won a second Game Gear on ebay. This one apparently doesn't load any games, and it comes with 9 so they can't all be dead surely? I mainly bought it for the boxed games and the original but tatty box it came in, should be here before the weekend :) I'm not the most popular with the better half now, and it's all your fault lol... Great fun though and totally worth it IMO.

GG's capacitors are at least 25 years old, ALWAYS do the capacitor MOD to prevent problems. After that done you can do different other mods to it. ;)

I'd suggest practicing on some other things with your soldering before you screw up a gameboy...they don't exactly make them anymore. Watch plenty of KZbin videos on soldering correctly before you attempt anything. Voultar and GameTechUS show some quality soldering work.

Don't they sell an SMD kit for your devices? I know you now have a hot air rework station. It'd make for a cleaner refurb and also hone your skills w/ the hot air station.

Dave B I wouldn't know if it would have any look term effects as the characteristics are vastly different between a ceramic and a electrolytic cap - no need for hot air as its only 2 pads, tweezers and a iron are good down to 0603

That's funny cap fluid smells like fish, couldn't find an organic connection so it must just be similar like how artificial flavors work or how poisons or septic wounds can smell of almonds. I really should try out those cap kits, needs doing anyway and I'm not really getting the true GG experience people got when it was new.

The game gear is centre negative the master system and mega drive 1 power packs are compatible the mega drive 2 was centre positive but was also a smaller size. here is a link to the service manual if you want to confirm. www.smspower.org/uploads/Development/GameGearMaintenanceManualEuropeVA0.pdf you will see that the pin connects to the battery negative via a blocking diode and the positive of the battery passes through a switch in the socket that cuts the positive connection when a psu is connected.

Please that spare power bord can fix my dead game gear (spare parts for those are difficult to find here in Romania ) I own over 100 game gear games but not console to play, it is for sure the power bord, as die by conecting a wrong adapter may be the power regulator is very small and my soldering skills are not very good . If you wish I can offer a exchange project item for the Game Gear power bord

You know I'm not saying don't fix more game gears cause I have one myself and love it but however many you buy you should pick up that many capacitor kits.imo no matter what's wrong with them new capacitors are mandatory since they seem to be the one who got the worst of the worst of all Sega products

Agreed. I have fixed a number of game gears for my family and friends (and myself of course ☺️). While I've done a LCD screen mod and led back light mod on a couple of them, caps were ALWAYS an issue. The original caps are indeed very cheap and leak more often then not. It does help to eliminate the headache and change the caps to help with further troubleshooting
