In this video I attempt to fix a Dell All in One (AiO) computer. It has already been looked at by a professional repair shop, and was eventually sold on eBay for £249 as spares or repair.
The fault was listed as a motherboard fault, but on initial testing it is showing no display. Can it be fixed? Let's find out!
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Welp, guess I'll add my two cents (or pennies?): 888+88+8+8+8 = 1000 888+88 = 976 976 + 8 + 8 + 8 = 976 + 24 = 1000

any Bios updates or AMD micro code drives on AMD's site for a-12?
@BuGGzLoVeRsTech

Hi Vince I might be wrong but some of the devices you show listed @22:28 SM Bus controller & PCI controller are generally to do with the Chipset. If you go onto the AMD Driver download page here www.amd.com/en/support or via google up to you. Select - Processors with graphics- then select - AMD A-Series Processors- AMD A12 Series APU for Desktop- 7th Gen A12-9800E APU - Download - install - Restart the system the other devices should be fine then as id imagine the Touch, Bluetooth, camera would all go through the chipset👍 !!Edited!! (I double checked and this is just for the Graphics driver)... You will need to find out what chipset the system is running and then select that trough the AMD driver list, again CPU-Z can help with this on the motherboard tab of CPU-Z it should state the Chipset name👍!! It's also on the AM4 socket so depending on the CPU support list for this model & bios updates you could put one of the newer Ryzen APU's in, the APU in the system now is a 35Watt part so as long as you stick to one around that wattage you should be fine. The newer APU's have Ryzen cores on the CPU side of things so decent upgrade, you should see a decent bump in performance as the A12 is a little weak really now. A couple of APU's you could try are the 2400GE & 3400GE if you can (FIRST) find the CPU support list for this model as it should state what APU are compatible, there might also be a bios update for it and that would improve your upgrade path. Ill have a look around see if I can find a bios update or support list for it👍

@@Mymatevince There is a bios update but it doesn't say much in terms of support list on the Dell Website, I just put DELL Inspiron 5475 bios in google and it was the first thing that came up. If you want to know what bios version the system is on and it doesn't state it in the Bios of the system itself, download (CPU-Z) and it might state it on the motherboard tab in the CPU-Z tool👍

@mjrdainbramage 3 жыл бұрын
@@g.h.190 Good point! Possibly also a BIOS/UEFI upgrade should be done. An upgrade will in some cases expand compatibility, and/or introduce new issues. In this case however it is worth a try if it can't be fixed in the BIOS settings. Having worked quite a bit with the Dell computers, I know that a BIOS downgrade is usually not very complicated if the new BIOS causes additional issues.

When I have suspected driver issues with Windows like this, I generally like to run a Linux live OS via USB. If things work in Linux alright, then I know for sure it's a software issue. If they still don't work, Linux has tools to help determine what the issue is. It depends what machine I'm working on which Linux distro I use, but generally something like Ubuntu or Mint work well for this purpose.

While generally you may be right, there are exceptions. For example I have a Fujitsu Amilo laptop from 2005! Got it for free :) It has a Realtek AC97 - ALC655 (Onboard) sound. Nothing poshy, right? But it has a digital optical output built in. I've upgraded CPU, RAM, HDD and Wifi on it. It runs Windows 7 (with extended updates) and is connected now to my home audio system using a fiber optic cable. I use it to listen to internet radio stations with 320kbit/s or higher quiality (over Wifi). I'm no audiophile, but the sound quality is absolutely perfect, just like listening to CDs. I can hear no artifacts or distortion even at high volumes. My audio system is also an old Philips home cinema receiver I think I bought it in 2006.

Hey Vince, thank you for another great repair video. One way to troubleshoot the problem is to create an Ubuntu Live USB flash drive. Just an idea, cheers.

Hi Vince, maybe the issues might be with windows in general, why not try installing Ubuntu 20.04, its free and its will run much faster than windows, Ubuntu is a good way to breathe life into old pcs and maybe somehow the camera and touchscreen might work with a different os, its easy to install, loads of guides online, just put a disk image on a usb and plug it in on boot and it will delete windows and install itself, or you can dual boot both operating systems if you want to keep both

Great video. I find that sometimes these all-in one machines were designed for Windows 7 or below and often work correctly if you install the O/S that it originally had. Also, get a small cheap SSD drive for testing purposes. Windows (and all of the updates) will load so much quicker than when using an HDD. Also you can swap quickly between operating systems to see if its a Windows 10 compatability problem thats causing the suspected driver issues. Anyhow, thumbs up from me.

Which you can always goto the manufacturers website and look up the model # and OS version and directly download individual drivers.. good job... glad it wasn't the big board... i didn't think it was, bcuz it was loading windows just fine on HDMI out.. that made it appear that the bigger board was okay.. i still haven't seen the PSU on either board.. then again you really didn't show back of small board or big board... sometimes they are integrated with logic boards..

Vince, if you are convinced that it is a driver problem and that it worked at some point I’d suggest re-flashing the bios to a version which would have been contemporary with the hardware after launch from the manufacturer site and then load a liteweight os, perhaps a version of Linux, on a memory stick to test it out. In one sense it is annoying you get partial failures but on less well made machines (cough, MacBooks) the loss of say one USB port can be enough to kill the whole machine. Separately, if you look online you can find a range of stand-alone screen testers which can plugin directly to the panel and show test patterns. The better testers come with dozens of connector cables to cope with the wide variety of panels in use. I looked at them but wouldn’t get the use ... of you are doing more laptops or TVs then it might be worth the investment. Keep up the great work 👏👏

That motherboard looks like a beefed up Inspiron laptop. I bought an 8th Gen based Inspiron 5580 for £80 on ebay last month for spares and repairs. Problems with it turned out to be due to someone taken a support bracket from the heatsink assembly so the wasn't in contact with the fan. The fan needed to be replaced as well. At least with Dells you can repair them yourself quite easily if you know what you're looking for unlike modern Apple products! Keep up the great work!

The touchscreen, bluetooth and webcam are most likely all on the same internal USB bus. It could still be a power or data issue with that USB controller/bus. I've seen similar things before where one device fails to start / sips too much power (due to a short); the controller reset and nothing works. But if you then plug in one thing, that thing might work. It might be worth looking into that; but besides all that this is still a very nice and usable device without those features. Great job!

Great fix Vince. What would be interesting is if you swapped those chips in a revisit to see if your theory was correct or if something to do with the SN75DP159. Interesting to see how the chip is the same as the One S, that was a nice surprise and I'd imagine you have one or 2 available 😁 On a side note, it sounds more like you might have a chipset driver issue not an issue with the webcam driver specifically. Built in webcams are based on the USB protocol and I'd imagine the touchscreen would be too. Like you say with the IC the chipset is a common link. You could try driver magician, it costs $30 USD but it's very accurate and reliable software:)

The camera issue is more than likely Windows privacy settings (search for broadcast setting on your PC). Use the Service Tag to identify the feature set that it originally shipped with - if it does report a touch screen it's probably a firmware issue (I don't think you can turn it off in the BIOS, but worth a check)

I had one of these which had the same issues with the touchscreen, bluetooth and webcam after upgrading to a later version of Windows 10 Pro. After I used the recovery CD to reinstall the original WIndows 10 Home and drivers it all worked fine again... but again updating with later versions of Windows 10 and going Pro made the touchscreen, bluetooth and webcam stop working all over so definitely a driver issue! So in the end I use it as a normal computer, minus the touchscreen which I dont use on a desktop display anyway, and added an external usb webcam and a bluetooth dongle to it so all good I guess! Great to see that you got the display going again though! :)

I had a Dell AMD all in one and I replaced the daughter card module. It was responsible for the video out, just as yours was. Fixed it (it's an older model, not as sophisticated as yours). Interestingly, last I knew the touch still worked on mine. If that's driver-related, you should find an original install of Win 10 to prove or disprove that. Good video, but chasing drivers to rule out the non-display is best to be avoided as the first-option.

Hey Vince, long time watcher and fan!! Couple things to try for those driver issues. For any ''Unknown Driver'' issues you can search what the driver is using its Hardware ID. Right Click Unknown Device then click Properties. Click Details Tab. ''Property'' Dropdown box Click ''Hardware IDs''. In the Value Box underneath highlight the top line and Google Search it (Copy/Paste). It'll tell you what the component is and able to search for its Driver. Secondly to fix Bluetooth & Front Camera try updating the Chipset Driver. This under Device Manager/System Devices/Top Line. This has been known on many laptops with Windows 10 to cause issues cos Manufacturer & Microsoft don't update this correctly. Lastly try IObit Driver Booster. This my go to to update any drivers and never failed me in 10 years!! Hope there's a follow up Video with this working as it should be

Tried gigabyte website...they don't have older driver software..they delete when new drivers come to market! Then found that just one Reddit user had a link on Google drive to the correct driver , job sorted and everything works again. Maybe you should try an older driver from when pc was built rather than most current one? Looking forward to more vids , you certainly seem to have improved your skills from your first ones! Dell no longer provides physical recovery media for machines like this. They have not shipped recovery CDs with their computers for several years now. The new alternative is to download the Dell OS recovery tool put in your service tag and if you are running a supported version of windows you can download a USB creation image that comes with the original factory drivers and utilities already pre-loaded into the image. That goes in a USB stick and the USB stick goes into the computer

could have so easily been bios chip bricked, but unless you have experience of updating the bios it would only have been done by servicing personel. but when the bios only takes a minute now, it isn't as bad as years ago, whereby the warnings said it could take up to 24 hours to flash the bios. great fix Vince, shame not really proved the fault apart from the fault being on the one board, but yeah a week trying to fault find something is a bit too long especially if it is someone like a child waiting to play a game or something on their pc.

Agreed! It would have to be a glossy style panel in order to be a touchscreen. If he has a matte finish panel then there will be no pen in touch available on that display. This guy clearly has not worked on a lot of Dells. He made a lot of rookie mistakes. First and foremost he didn’t bother going on to dell.com/support and entering the service tag to see the original configuration of the machine. He also did not install Dell support assist or, go onto the dell.com support site and do an auto detect for drivers. He also remove the CMOS battery and clearly he put it back in but the video didn’t show him going into the bios and doing any of the diagnostics to test the Hardware nor did he reset the bios to the fact reconfiguration after he pulled that battery. He also didn’t appear to go onto dell.com support and get the latest bios version which may have automatically re-initialized any hardware that was deactivated with removing the CMOS battery. Finally, he went about installing windows on that machine the hard way. What he should’ve done is on a separate machine download the Dell OS recovery tool, run it with the system service tag, and that would’ve allowed him to build a custom USB stick with the original operating system that chipped on that machine. If it goes back to 2017 there’s no doubt in my mind that that thing was probably shipping with windows 10 or at the very least windows 8.1 which would still be supported until 2023

Hi Vince, I had an issue similar to yours on another device. Going back to the days of Old. With the WEB Cam, I would trying installing the drivers for the camera without it plugged in. I had a problem with a USB Cable that had a Certain type Chipset and it was very annoying. I had to uninstall all the drivers go into the registry and clean any remains there as well. Then installed the drivers for the crazy chipset and after days and days of messing with this Cable it WORKED and has worked fine since. Not saying this your issue and most likely you have already tried this but hey...Worth a shot

Classic story of some Dell's HP's and Acer AIO units having touchscreen issues after upgrading to Win 10. In some cases the touchscreen is detected but in bright or changing light they act as if they are being touched when they are not. You see little bubbles on the screen where it looks like fingers ate touching it. I have seen it when the owner has gone from Windows to Win 10 but in other cases they may have been on Win10 for a year or so then they get an update and it happens. Those you can prove by just rolling the update back and it returns to normal. Sill a nice versatile pc for the price.

sometimes in windows 10 older drivers require you to disable driver signature enforcement because they were not signed for windows 10 Also a program I recommend as well is driver easy Snappy driver installer can sometimes install the wrong drivers

If you plan on doing more windows pcs in the future, I HIGHLY recommend you download windows media creation tool on your main pc. Any time you go to re-install windows on a device you can use the media creation tool to create a windows 10 bootable flash drive with the latest version of windows and all the drivers that come with windows.

Well done for your diagnosis and perseverance. If in future you ever get the other bits working it would be nice if you could just do. 5 minute follow up video to explain. Probably too much work, but wondered if you could get a set of software and drivers from when it was first released to check? Touchscreen support you can maybe imagine keep being an issue, but camera and bluetooth are on almost everything so those 2 must really annoy you. Great video.

Did you check to see if Driver Signature Enforcement was an issue? This bites a lot of people. Disabling this can sometimes help. You can also sometimes manually change the INF files in the driver to to pass the Signature Enforcement and install properly then.

What's with eBay listings in the UK that thoroughly describe the item? The eBay US method, with statements like "untested", "it worked last time I used it", and "works perfectly other than no picture or sound" is far more effective.

If you have no back light AND no image being generated then it not a screen issue as those two things are separate circuits and the fault lies in the device super I/O ect that activates the screen to turn on. you can check live screen backlight power present at the screen and probe the "on" circuits on the screen. A totally dead screen as i said , i go straight to the connector to make sure it inserted and no bent pins although that would only effect one of those two circuits. totally no life almost always means the "on" to that screen isnt working. Fact you have output to another monitor could mean screen disabled somewhere like bios or still could be on boards. Things get tricky from this point. This video is good as it narrows down what area it isnt and then what to fault find. always check the obvious especially if others have been inside however they were inside as screen not working so there IS a issue.
