1918 Aircraft Rivet Hammer - Restoration

In this video i'm restoring an aircraft rivet hammer.
This pneumatic rivet hammer was sent to me by one of my subscribers from germany, thank you for that. It's a very cool and unique looking tool, I've never seen this tool before and that's why I decided to restore it and make a video for you guys. I was told that this tool was stored in the basement when they had a flooding, that was probaly the reason why it was rusty and didn't work anymore. I had a few ups and downs during this restoration. The cast of the aluminium handle was very porous and a lot of tiny holes appeared after fine sanding and polishing, also the welding didn't work quite well. I first tried to TIG weld, but that didn't work at all. For the visible steel parts I decided to make them black, for the optic and also as rust protection. My idea was to sandblast those parts to make a nice and even finish, but because I'm using very fine glas bead all the small damages in the surface from the rust were still visible. So I had to sand them all away. The bluing worked very well and it makes a nice contrast to the polished parts in my oppinion. The old air fitting was put together out of three different pieces made of brass to get the right thread size. I didn't really liked that option and decided to make a new one. I really wasn't pleased during the restoration just because of the porous cast of the handle and I thought about it for a long time to not even publish the video because of that. But as soon as I tested it after the restoration I had a huge smile all over my face, this is a very cool tool and it ended up working perfectly fine. I hope you don't judge me to hard for my very bad welding abilities and the bad outcome of the aluminium handle.

I know it's been three years but I think you did a really good job, I've seen other channels fix those welding spots by heating up the entire object and letting it slowly cool back down, it makes all the metal an even temperature and when it cools back down everything blends together

Nah..it's really dirty work (when you working on lots of stuff) and a breathing mask-protection should be used.I did the exact job for about 4 years long time ago-and after all..you ll need to protect the metal with various methods after finishing with the polishing..

I don't make parts look like show pieces but I do go far enough to restore a tool or parts function. And let me tell you it takes alot of time patience and effort to get those parts to the level that this guy is doing. He makes it look easy. I would love to see a breakdown of how many hours he spends in these restorations. Unless you sold the items for astronomical prices you could never make a profit. With today's technology and manufacturing capabilities tool are made to look more precise in their finish but I doubt they will be around for a hundred year's.

I absolutely agree. "My Mechanics" does it they way it should be done. I like to hear the sounds of the tools and to hear people clearly when they do speak. So many people sabotage their own videos by going out of their way to add a music track that plays over their voice 😂😂😂. The weirdest part is, these video makers actually think the music makes their video "better". Just like the "laugh track" ruined some of the greatest tv shows US history, the "music track" ruins some of the would be great youtube channels.

I must confess something... when watching your videos I feel both a deep sense of shame and a great inspiration. I was always a "It's good enough." kinda guy. I always thought if it works fine then dont bother with it. But then i see someone like you. who sees something that could be better..so they make it better. I know the struggle with porous aluminum. I was restoring something recently, a drill powered angle buffer from the 1950's, and it was originally a rough cast finish, but I wanted to file it smooth and polish it but no matter how much I filed, new voids kept appearing. So I decided to do a sand blast finish so at least they weren't as noticable. Thank you for your inspiring videos!

Most "restorers" are more refurbishers than they are restorers. They bring them up to working speed and get them looking good for their age. You truly restore something. Going as far as fabricating something that looks exactly in its place. Love your videos.

I'm a an aircraft structure repair technician and use this type of tool in my daily work. This one is a piece of history! We never have the time to take such care of our tools, it's a shame because the way this riveter turned out is stunning! I'd love to test it. Can't tell the strength of this model and which dash of rivet it is supposed to shoot, but I have a whole bunch of solid aircraft aluminium rivets at home if you want. Use a thick buffed piece of steel as bucking bar and let's go riveting!

No music is great, but my favorite thing of all: it's not sped up. I never realized how much I appreciate just hearing the sounds of these loud machines at work until I saw this guy's videos. Most of the other restoration channels I see always speed up the entire process and honestly they may as well just mute the audio. I don't want to hear an angle grinder running at 20x the normal speed for 30 seconds straight. Show me a few cuts of it here and there doing its thing and then move on to the next bit. That's what I really enjoy about this guy's videos. He does just that. No single part of the project is shown for too long. Each step is shown just long enough that you get the idea without it being overly boring, and it's not sped up so the sound of the equipment has a reason to be there. Another really good channel I recommend is the hot wheels restoration guy, baremetalHW. He has a similar editing style to my mechanics but focuses on restoring vintage (and more modern) Hot Wheels toy cars. Really neat channel if you want to see more stuff in this kind of style. Many of them are not "perfect" restorations but he does a pretty good job of getting things as close as possible to the original image. As usual, pitting of the main body cast like what was experienced here is still an issue, not much can be done about that. But it's still really interesting to see the entire process, and baremetalHW also provides insightful commentary.

From watching you at work I assume it brings you great pleasure to repair and improve. Not just for the end result (which is always amazing by the way) but because the process of it.
