They did have a couple of advantages in deep snow, though - most passenger cars back then had better ground clearance than even most 'cuvs' or 'suvs' these days, let alone today's ground-hugging passenger cars; and cars had thinner tires which cut through snow easier and increase pressure on the footprint (for more snow traction).

The Oil Embargo & Even/Odd days in 1973-1974 were sea changes for the American Auto industry. That's explains why Ford did well with the Pinto. Even into the '80's the public sacrificed safety for economy. Explains why even Le Car had a following. Sadly, Detroit just wasn't nimble. Toyota & Honda owe their beginning to the Energy Crisis. Yet American Auto could compete. Remember AMC? Interestingly, 2000 saw $1.01 regular & the SUV took off. Now even ad oil prices lower, TESLA & e cars grow!

@@@drott150 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather_Eye A feature was the "desert only" setting on the A/C thermostat control, a position that typically ran the compressor continually. In humid environments, the evaporator will freeze up from the accumulating condensation if the compressor operates constantly, which will ultimately block airflow.[18] Other temperature settings cycle the compressor to prevent this problem. Freeze up is not a concern in dry environments such as deserts, and this setting provides constantly cooled air flow into the passenger compartment.

My Dad did this comparison in 1972. Neither car had the leg room he expected to need with teenage sons. He bought a Saab 99. A much better interior design, it had more legroom than the bigger Dart/Valiant. And fuel injection, front wheel drive and 1 HP / cubic inch. It handled well, where as other family Dart's just were good for tire screeching when trying to stop.

@@CJColvin mechanically , yeah. Expensive electronic fuel injectors. seat adjusters, trunk hinges. Drive chain. PITA stuff. But the Saab made it close to 200,000 w/o rusting out. The wife's Dart needed floor repair by 100,000 miles.

I had both back in the day. I thought both where basically nice cars. '72 Demon with 225 six auto, gold with black side stripes and cream color vinyl seats interior. '74 Maverick green with 200 six auto, green cloth seats. I sold the Demon when I was issued a company car, the new owner promptly rolled and totalled it. The doors rusted off the maverick and it was junked. The maverick had one irritating habit of throwing on full choke at any time and killing the engine. The thing with the demon was the slant six mechanical valve lifters made noise.

40-cents might seem cheap, but the minimum wage in 1972 was $1.60; I made $333/month as an E3 in the army. Adjusted for inflation, gas is cheaper now than its every been.

I had a '72 302 Maverick. 340 Demon would have smoked it. Plus, I remember trying to change spark plugs in the Maverick. The shock towers were so close to the heads you couldn't get your hands in there. Plus, the front end components were completely worn out before you even hit 100K miles. I remember 1972. I was in high school. By then we could see that the performance era was no longer with us. Power was dropping like a rock and it was illegal to modify engines on the newer cars. At that time that we had no reason to think horsepower would ever return. It took over a decade to even begin to come back.
@Dave_Boyer6 жыл бұрын
Mavericks were never meant to be performance cars, they were the cheapest of the cheap. It’s interesting, I have Ford sales literature comparing the same cars, I’ll have to look it up and see how Ford compared the two.

Back when I bought my first car in 1985, a 6 cylinder Maverick in very good shape was about 600-900. I thought I was smart buying an old Japanese car, I think a Maverick in good shape that an older person owned with simple technology would've been much better.
@chryslerelectronicleanburn16766 жыл бұрын
Here is another thought. Shouldn't the Demon be compared to the Mercury Comet. Since Dodge is a Medium price make. The Ford Maverick should have been compared to Plymouth Duster.
@d.e.b.b57886 жыл бұрын
It's the same car, with a different trim package. Duster and Demon, identical other than trim. Same with Cuda and Challenger. Same with Camaros and Firebirds, identical chassis platform, only the few pieces of bodywork & trim (nose & Tail) were different. At least ford had the decency to make the Couger look completely different from the Mustang even if they had identical chassis.

I bought a Maverick in high school with a 302.. By the time it had 40k miles on it, the front suspension & driving parts were worn completely out.. Warranty long gone , I took it to our local mechanic... Cost me a pretty penny . He told me , if you keep this car , you'll be putting these parts on again.. According to him , they usued the same suspension regardless of motor.. And the V8 weight just beat the front end parts to death... I traded it in on a Firebird...

7:00 the front wheels were really spaced 2 inches further apart than the rear wheels. This made the car look incredibly stupid, but you were able to put wider rims on the back with no rubbing problems.

They are Killing all cars in favor of Crossovers. I personally can't stand Crossovers. They are like stubby minivans without sliding doors. I really want to know how they come to these decisions over there at Ford. First they said they won't replace the crown Vic with the AU falcon. Said it would be too heavy. Then they realse the Taurus that is 700lbs heavier with FWD. Then they kill off the Ranger, said no one wants Rangers. I say is has more to do with by the time they thought of this in 2009 their last ad campaign for the ranger ended five years earlier. Guess how long they noticed the sales drop...five years. Also the fact that is was still an early 90's design didn't help. So then they said they will price the F150 closer to Ranger customers....then just three years later they announced the new aluminum F150 that starts at $30,000. An don't get me started on their engines. As soon as the irion out all the issues they end production and pump out some new motor with issue. The hell Ford!!

@bigheadfred6 жыл бұрын
You're right! The fastback body style was only intended originally for Plymouth. Dodge later got that body also because of complaints from the management of the Dodge Division after they saw the success of the Duster. If you look at the rear arch sculpting carefully, you'll see that it matches perfectly with the Plymouth Valiant front wheel opening contours, but seem mismatched for the Dodge Dart. My parents had a light green '73 Duster with a Slant Six.
