It's great that you are putting these old filmstrips on KZbin! It really helps the restorers of these old Mopars. Marc.

They used to rebuild the water pumps? They used to rebuild everything back in the day, now we just know how to R&R.

That is true. Improved mass production is one reason why there are so many throwaway parts. Also, the parts that do get rebuilt are so complicated, that having a specialist is the most effective way of doing things. I knew a guy who's late 1980s Subaru had a very uncommon and expensive alternator. He tried to save money with a rebuild kit, but couldn't put the alternator back together. As a result, he had to buy another one, and the parts store couldn't accept his core. That was a very expensive disaster.

They forgot to mention the water distribution tube was steel that rotted out. Later tubes were brass.

HEAD GASKET IS TIGHT ??? WHATS UP WITH THAT ??
@skylinefever

Some of those old head gaskets would deform after a few thousand miles, and someone would have to torque the bolts again. I'm not sure when head gasket technology reached the point where they could be left alone permanently after installation.

3:48 I guess the vapor pressure method was how things were done in the past. I only heard of engine thermostats using a wax pellet that expands with heat. One thing I never understood was that cars continued to use thermostats after being computerized. I always figured a computer would do a better job deciding coolant flow than an expandable piece of wax would. One good thing about some computerized longitudinal engines was that the fan clutch was either on or off based on demand, and went on full the moment the A/C was switched on, older pumps depended on the temperature inside the water pump. 7:05 Modern cars sometimes have a similar situation. Over the past 30 years, there has been a significant increase in the number of water pumps with plastic impellers. It is very common for those plastic impellers to shear off or crack. Usually this happens after the warranty ends. 7:38 serpentine belts with automatic tensioners were introduced in the late 1970s and gradually replaced manually adjustable belts. However, they don't last forever, so always know the signs of a failing tensioner and replace it when you need to. 12:51 You can detect even smaller leaks with a "Lisle block tester." It has a fluid that reacts with carbon monoxide, and it changes color when exposed. You put it over the radiator cap, where the small bubbles usually rise. I don't think those existed when this was filmed.

Good grief! Landing at Normandy was easier than fixing a bad radiator.
