Doc, in my opinion, was the greatest of all time.

What a great song by Doc. It would have been so neat to have seen him in concert. I'm also a guitar player. It is so much fun listening to Doc. These old ballads like this one and others like Matty Groves, and The House Carpenter are some of my favorite Doc Watson songs. Doc you will be missed.

Doc, flat picker supreme, here demonstrates sublime finger picking technique.

This song was first printed as a broadside ballad in London around 1630. “A lamentable new Ditty, made upon the death of a worthy Gentleman, named George Stoole, dwelling sometime on Gate-side Moore, and sometime at New-castle in Northumberland: with his penitent end. To a delicate Scottish Tune.” The ballad became popular enough to be reprinted again in 1683. “The Life and Death of George of Oxford: To a pleasant New Tune, called, Poor Georgy.” The 1683 version added the well known first line. “As I went over London Bridge all in a misty morning, There did I see one weep and mourn, lamenting for her Georgy.”

I lived in North Carolina for a long time and was lucky enough to get to see Doc, Doc & Merle, and Doc with others. I never did get to meet him. You are truly blessed/lucky! What memories we all will have of this great man...and his music. Thank you so much for your comment and your tribute for Doc Watson! I appreciate it very much. My best to you, Moppet (Barbara) p.s. I put Doc's a cappella version of "Pretty Saro" on. It shows off his great vocals instead of his great flat-picking.

I'm glad you enjoyed this song by Doc Watson. He helped keep the mountain songs that the early settlers brought over with them alive throughout the years. Yes, this is the American mountain version of an English/Irish ballad. He changed the name from Geordie to Gerorgie. Thanks for listening and taking your time to comment! He was a great man and a great musician. He is missed! My best to you, Moppet

There are distinct English and Scots versions of this song with the English being the earliest. It is not Irish at all. There are certainly English versions of the song titled 'Georgie'.

I love this song. I have lived in North Caroline all my life, and I got to go to Merle fest, sadly it was the year he died. But my great-grandfather sang with him a lot, and we have some songs they sang together, and such. (:

You have some treasured memories then. I hope the songs are recorded on tape or saved somehow. I was living in NC when Merle died. It was so sad & front page news. I saw them several times & was sad when Doc said he was 'retiring'. I was thrilled to see him when he came back. We gave him a standing ovation as he walked into the room in Charlotte. (I miss him & don't have any ties to him like you do.) Thanks for commenting & listening, Moppet

Well, I'm a grandma so I probably would phrase it a bit differently but you are right! Thanks for listening and leaving a comment. I appreciate seeing when people enjoy. Sorry I'm so late with this. I've been ill & am just getting back on my feet. My best to you, Moppet

As I walked over london bridge One misty morning early I heard some fairy young maiden say Lord spare me the life of Georgie Go settle me up my milk white steed And bridle him so gayly Then ride away to the king´s high court And plead for the life of Georgie" So she rode all day and she rode all night Til she was running weary Then calming back her long yowl hair She plead for the life of georgie Then georgie roared up and he plead for himself He says I never murdered any But he stole sixteen of the king´s best steeds And sold them in romany Then the oldest law urged the bar Says "George I´m sorry for you, But your own confession condemns you to die, May the lord have mercy upon you If I was over on yonder hill, Where kisses I´ve had a plenty With my sword and my pistol by my side I´d fight for the life of Georgie As Georgie was walking through the streets He bid farewell to many Then he bid farewell to his own true love Which grieved him worse then any Georgie was hanged with a golden cord Just like you´ve never seen many For he was a member of the royal race And loved by a virtuous lady

Joel Courtois I'd like to thank you for listening and commenting on Doc Watson long ago. I've been ill for several years and am now getting better. I'm catching up with comments. They mean a lot to me. Thanks for stopping by! My best to you, Moppet ps I put up his version of Tom Dooley a bit ago. I had surgery in July and had a miraculous recovery. I'm able to post again, Barbara
