Probably the most beautiful old time Appalachian mountain music song ever recorded. Just a phenomenal rendition by Doc.

Doc and Merle spent an evening with us in Ithaca NY back in the mid-1980's. I cooked dinner, and then we all picked and grinned. :-) What a pleasure and honor!

I went to KZbin to find a version of Doc Watson singing this song, because the song was on my mind, and I first heard it from a Doc Watson recording, and I am grateful to have found your video. "Songcatcher:" is a wonderful movie, and celebrates a tradition I love.

MerlePsyA I loved it. It was one of two movies I could get my mom to watch. She loved it & had her 2 sisters come over to watch. (They grew up in the mountains & it 'rang true' to them.) I got the first Songcatcher cd & was disappointed...for about 3 minutes. They used famous musicians on that cd. I ended up loving it. I also was upset they didn't use the same music that was in the movie. Well, a few years later this cd came out. I guess there were a lot of people that wanted the 'real' music...the music of the mountains. I love both cd's. I love the traditions. I was brought up with this type music & even a 'primitive' type. Thanks so much for listening. It is truly appreciated! I do have a Playlist called "SOUNDTRACKS" & it has all my Songcatcher music in it, if you ever want to look around. My best to you, Moppet p.s. Doc Watson is in Old Timey or Mountain Music Playlists. I love Doc. :))

Doc Watson singing one of his beloved mountain songs, "Winter's Night", from "The Songcatcher II - The Tradition That Inspired The Movie". This is the true music of a region and an era. Doc was a repository of information and musical traditions. He was also much loved around the world. We miss him and will treasure his gifts to us as long as music is heard. Thank you, Doc Watson!

Tob Blackstar I'm laughing! I only see each post at a time. I just sent you a long message. I wanted to say, now that I see other posts, that I appreciate it when people share! Thank you. The photos I have & the blog links I have concern Native & Black mixed heritage. I even have a Pura Fe link where she explains why in her part of the country, they are intermingled & the history is similiar...oppression, taking away of land....I saw you share Ulali & I LOVE Pura Fe!!! That just popped into my head as I was writing. If you aren't interested, that is ok also. This was not offered as "pressure" to you. This was offered out of respect in case you might wish to have the photos & links. Blessings, Barbara

Great song. I remember reading the original album liner notes from the great 1966 Doc Watson classic album "Home Again" -- a recording that showed what an incredible artist Doc was that included this song and led me to essentially learn guitar from listening to him (the best player around). The notes said that the familiar-sounding words of the song (e.g., "til the rocks all melt in the sun") were because the song drew lyrics from several traditional folk songs -- and sort of "swiped" and combined some lines, as many folk songs do. I think the original main song that it drew from was called something a bit awkward, like "Who's Going to Shoe Your Poor Little Feet" or something like that -- a line found in Doc's version. I learned Doc's great finger-picked version of this song in A with help from reading the tablature in a songbook that he published a few decades ago -- and teach my guitar students the version -- as well as what a legend Doc Watson is to acoustic guitarists.

Beautful version. Robert Burns had a variant of most of these lyrics inthwe 18th century, and it was likely around long before that.
@MyMoppet5210 жыл бұрын
MrMusicguyma Thank you for listening and adding your info. It sounds correct because the movie this came from traced the roots of the songs back to 'the old countries'. I appreciate your insight. I didn't know that Robert Burns had a variant of these lyrics & like to learn. Thank you. My best, Moppet

+MyMoppet52 the Burns song is: My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose
@gynack5 жыл бұрын
@@MyMoppet52 kzbin.info/www/bejne/jme9aZlqZ8t5bq8 This is probably the best known version of the lovely Burns song My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose . Kenneth McKellar, a trained operatic tenor, became a very popular singer, particularly of Scottish songs, and there are many clips of him on YT. However, many people think this is lovely, and I hope you enjoy it - if 4 years on you're still keeping an eye on this. Thanks so much for uploading Doc's Winter Night which is also such a lovely song.

A-rovin' on a winter's night And a-drinkin' good old wine, Thinkin' about that pretty little girl, That broke this heart of mine. She is just like a bud of rose, That blooms in the month of June. Or like some musical instrument, That's just been lately tuned. Perhaps it's a trip to some foreign land, A trip to France or Spain, But if I should go ten thousand miles, I'm a-comin' home again. And it's who's a-gonna shoe your poor little feet, Who's a-gonna glove your little hands? Who's a-gonna kiss your sweet little lips, Honey, who's a-gonna be your man? I love you till the sea runs dry, And the rocks all melt in the sun. I love you till the day I die, Though you will never be my own. A-rovin' on a winter's night And a-drinkin' good old wine, Thinkin' about that pretty little girl, That broke this heart of mine.
