The difference between the MD final 7 and 4 years earlier in 80 a'd 83 is like night and day. In this match you will see the dynamic mutltiple rapid smashes in Succesions that was absent in 83 MD finals. Both team exhibit attack and defence and rallies are long. A racket stringer from that era told me the change in technology made that possible.

modern racquets can be strung above 30 lbs but racquets like the carbonex 8 or before could not be strung above 25 lbs before the frame collapsing.

Old timers claim that modern light flexible racquets make defence much easier especially after the onset of the one piece carbones 20.Before that it was difficult to defend with stiff heavy racquets like carbonex 8 resulting in less rallies.

Was rewatching 83 final and compared it with this one. You re right on the defence . Overall strength of smashing did not seem to have changed . But the speed movement of the racket seem more dynamic in 87. 83 both teams seemed unable to lift the shuttle to the back resulting in a lot of net kill. Mind you Martin and Tregett and quite hard smasher but the shuttle speed seem slow in 83 compared to 87.

And even the sideks werent able to defend Tredgett's smashes with lifts or cross court blocks in 84 AE S final compared to 87. Technology do play a part in the evolution of the game
