The idea of a beloved character dying a tragic death ,then having them come back and be glad to see us, but also have them state that they were at peace and be conflicted about being brought back is a really neat story idea I didn’t think I’d like as much as I did initially

The way i see it, the Light and Darkness represent two sides of a singular afterlife. One that has been reunified in the Traveler thanks to the Final Shape. Cayde "experienced" nothing inside the Traveler, but was aware enough to feel like it was a good nothing, that he was with Sundance, and there was Light. Guardians and Ghosts apparently are united with the Traveler after the final death for both. The thing is, with Darkness being tied to consciousness and memory and perspective, that could allow a Guardian that experienced a final death and in the same situation as Cayde to begin to experience things outside of that good nothing, and have the environment around them begin to take shape like we did in the campaign. I imagine something similar to what happened with Osiris after Savathun left him comatose, where an infusion of Darkness brought him back to consciousness, but applied to the afterlife instead. Add to that Strand and the Weave, how everyone is linked together in Darkness, and perhaps now the Traveler can bring in all conscious beings into the afterlife instead of just Guardians. Good news for Zavala if that's true, little bit of hope he really can reunite with his family.

Adding onto this, Micah-10 says that the nightmares on nezarec's ship are a yet-untapped power of darkness that he imbued into his ship. So, I wonder, if this red part is the true manifestation of memory. It most likely is, because of shadowkeep's campaign and season of the haunted. But, I believe that there's a lot more to this than we know.

My theory before Final Shape, was that there was a place, deep within the Traveker, or Pale Heart, that Guardian spirits go to after their final death. A domain akin to Valhalla. Where long dead Guardian legends would live and fight aginst each other and their friends and family, while protecting the Pale Heart. The Gardner, having raised these Guardians from sleep, to protect the Traveler aginst the Witness and its forces, as she forsaw this coming. We would meet legends like Fellwinter, and Radagast, Fairwind and Ulan-Tan, the Sunbreakers. They would mention to us they met their old friends and families, from before and after they were risen. Ikora and Osiris, finding ways to commune with them, even outside the Traveler.

I've been struggling a lot with my mortality as of recent. I find myself up late into the night trying to comprehend what happens to my state of being when I pass away. I am so unbelievably terrified of it, I have lost an incredible amount of sleep over it. The worst part of it all, is that my life is basically just starting. I'm in college, and I don't even have my degree yet. I have my whole life ahead of me, and yet I'm scared of the end. However, when I played final shape, I felt a bit of comfort in what Cayde-6 was saying. This as well. I think that there is something that happens to us when we die. What it is, is up to your interpretation. But I believe the worst possible outcome is a void of peaceful nothing. No fear. No pain. No stressing about turning in assignments. None of that. Peace. I know it's corny, but live your life. There's only one of you. We don't know what happens at the end, so make the most of it before that comes.

Hard to say. Half of the Nine wanted the Final Shape to occur, the other half, didn’t. Whatever they do next, they may see the Traveler’s change, and the Echos, as a chance to achieve their goals in no longer being bound to us to exist. If, they can agree on anything first. They’re too divided amongst each other to really take any true action. But, no doubt recent events have inspired them in some ways.

@@MandoPrime1138 the Nine’s main goal is to keep existing. They exist because of they are made up of dark matter in the solar system and the planets. So if the Witness enacts the Final Shape, that matter will not exist and so the Nine will not exist. That’s the only reason the Nine were “helping” us at all. So now that the Final Shale is stopped, and the Nine’s existence is secured, we don’t know what their next goal will be.

One thing that wasn't mentioned by you, probably because it was kind of a throw away line of lore written somewhere, it's that when you shoot an Eliskni/fallen in the head, it is theorized that the white stuff that flows out is their soul. Destiny 2 added credibility to this cause now, when you shoot one in the head, a white shillohete of their bodies rises to the sky for a flash of a moment.

The talk of an afterlife, from the different perspectives as said in this video…it reminds me of my History of Religion class I took last semester. How each religion, each sub sect have and had different interpretations of what life is like after physical death. Whether to become one with the Earth, reincarnation, a realm of heaven, a spirit world, and oh so many others we be here for hours discussing them all. Though the one thing I always kept in mind, despite my LDS background, is there is no right nor wrong answer. Each individual has their own interpretation of what the afterlife is like. Even if some will say there isn’t one at all. So long as they are content, that they are happy with what they believe in and thus stick to it, that is enough. Hence when Cayde described what the afterlife was like, I felt happy and a bit joyful. Not because of the description of the realm, but because of what he, the character, experienced and wants it back again. The personal experience. For the narrative leads and writers who pulled that off well, you hit this subject on the head. Marvelous
@Hinaloth
@Hinaloth 2 ай бұрын
I read Micah's revelation with Cayde's speech into something else. All guardians and ghosts get shuffled back into the traveller "like cards in a deck"... except the Traveller is keeping that deck in hand, ready to replay the cards when needed. I don't think that "afterlife" is so final, or so great if they're just kept in reserve for the next major crisis... Sure, Cayde was raised by Riven, but that just means that it is possible to raise a soul from the Traveller, even if the ball didn't do it itself. We don't know it cannot do so itself.

I've always been a "There is an afterlife in Destiny" truther and I'm so glad TFS shed some light on it. The concept from the previous speaker of Light being present within everything and the concept of the Traveler being a force that flows through everything reminds me a lot of Konko Shinto and Kamisama. Kamisama is known as the universal parent and that all living things are its children. Kamisama is a force that flows through everything and that after someone dies, their soul goes back into Kamisama along with the souls of everyone else who has died. Seeing the similarities in TFS made me really happy and hopeful for the Destiny lore. Amazing video!

The traveler's "Gift" is neutral to those so gifted, that is why Ghost raise whom they raise, and STICK with their choice, EVEN when that 'choice' chooses themselves to use the "gift" of the Traveler for their own selfish and nefarious ends. It's why the Warlords were themselves hunted down and those who did not go on to become Guardians were killed off, and their Ghosts either killed or 'rehabilitated'. It's also why some Guardians 'hunt' others. The 'gifts' of the traveler to the Lightless are (of course) of a different order. The Traveler as a Necromancer? I don't think so, seeing as a Necromancer seeks to control the Lich they raise. The Traveler does not seek to control the Guardian, from what I can see. But I could well be wrong. However, I doubt it.

One thing missed that is one of my favorite pieces of Destiny lore is from the Hidden Dossier: "The question of how to live well in a universe of indifference, cruelty, and deprivation is the ONLY question. The Light does not offer us an afterlife or an otherworldly paradise. It does not give us throne worlds or pocket universes. The Light tells us that paradise is something we have to make here." I love this. It's inspiring. Ikora has unified the philosophy of the Light, the Traveler, and how it applies to the metaphysics affecting us as individuals. Does this contradict the new TFS lore? Ehhhh kinda... Let me try and reconcile. Darkness is about domination over the material universe. Per the causal logic of the universe, the Darkness's philosophy of behavior is what succeeds: consume, replicate, exist. But the Light requires us to seek cooperation, to give up the individual good for universal good. The Light lives in all places, in all things, there is literally residual Light all around us per the Splicer Gauntlet lore. It is creation itself. The Traveler gives Guardians unification, what comes from the Light returns to the Light. Perhaps there's enough residual Light in all life to return to the Traveler, to join the afterlife. I think to truly define the Traveler's afterlife, we must view it as a unification of all things. Darkness separates, creates individuals, manifests consciousness and memory, but the Light is everything. We return to what we truly are: part of the universe itself. But if we want a paradise, something that could only exist in the material universe made of Light and Darkness, then that paradise must be made by those brave enough to try. And we must protect the Traveler, lest the Darkness destroys it, losing unification, this "afterlife," and all that has ever existed.

I've taken a peek beyond the veil about three times in my life, and got to rip DMT once. Being a warlock main, I feel I should give my two cents, being so explicitly called out. I love Destiny partly because I think they're onto something so far as afterlives go. I've seen a lot. Heaven, Hell, and many spaces in between. I think hive philosophy regarding throne worlds, while grim, could work in theory. That, or starting a religion, generating a thoughtform of that afterlife that then cascades as followers go naturally. Energy is neither created nor destroyed, only transfered. All I know is that when you die, you go somewhere. Maybe not immediately, but the black is peaceful. It's cool, there's no pain. Only peace as the feeling recedes. Coming back universally sucks. Normally, it's a hellride coming back while the death chemicals are still firing.

It may be obvious, but if Guardians go to the Traveler when they die, are the visions Thanatanauts see just them returning to the Traveler? (like Cayde and the visions we see throughout the campaign) And if the Traveler WAS immaterial it just showed dreams but now that the Pale Heart has been made physical by the darkness how would that affect Thanatanautics? Maybe that is how the Witness was stopping the Traveler's visions to us, by making them material.

I'm not really sure what video to ask this on, so I'm just going to ask it here and now on the most recent video as of the writing of this message. Under the assumption that there are more disciples out there beyond the system, what will they do with the realization that the Witness is defeated? Will they retaliate? Rethink their existence? Try to fill the power vacuum? Given that we don't know any of these theoretical disciples, there is no real way of knowing as of yet. So what do you think is most likely? What would you like to see? Do you think we could one day have a former disciple as an ally in the last city (or where ever we call home when we depart the system)? What of Eramis? She almost got disciple status. How is she going to handle the sudden freedom? I'm excited to see what happens with Sivu Aurath as I'm willing to bet my Bottom Dollar that we'll get to see that at least in part in Episode: Revenant. What will the Traveler do now that it's free of the Witness but still not its former self? Sure it needs to heal, but that won't take forever.

It still rubs me the wrong way that even as we killed the witness, the traveler still didn’t even try and help us as we lost our ghost, or even acknowledge or thank us for all we’ve done for it. I get that it’s whole thing is not interfering with stuff, but it really does make it seem more like we really are nothing but a weapon for the traveler to wield

I find it really sad how the Hive have been reduced in lore into this magic race and completely abandoned on the front of technology. One of the things that drew me in so hard about D1 architecture was the very clearly mechanical parts of Hive constructs. It felt terrifying and Giger-like, and they really moved in a path that abandoned that aesthetic in place of pretty much only exploring their religious culture.

I thought that in the lore, it says that every human has a tiny bit of light in them since the traveler started the golden age so maybe everyone born after the golden age started would be in the travelers heaven

Sorry, it's a little lengthy. Just thorough with my thoughts is all. I'm an insomniac and I've had 3h of sleep in 3 days and needed a distraction. Don't screech and scratch me. It's just for funzies theory stuff. Paracausality is effectively an outside force taken advantage of and tapped into by beings/entities below the realm/dimension/plane in which it originates. The Traveler and Winnower are tools themselves. Either they're unaware of their own origins but act instinctually towards their purpose, similar to how most life forms do, understand the basics of what is what (survival, expand, adapt, accumulate data, etc) but like Guardians they have no concept of before. At one point, the Traveler and Winnower may have been one tool. A tool that had an engine that created/built/destroyed constructs and an engine that collected the data and configuration. Their separation allowed for data to not be distributed across the whole, but allowed for packets/data to become isolated, adapt, and evolve independently from the rest. Unending tiny games that grow in scale, spread, and interact from the tiniest spect to the largest sense of emptiness between spaces. It stopped being one grand "game" with all the data in one place connected to all in a power struggle, A sword logic-like existence from start to finish. It became more like the Bomb Logic, variations upon variations of different data crossing each other, exchanging, ending the other, or becoming a more complex system that allowed for mutual gain based on usefulness. The Traveler's Light and Darkness (as we know it now), were originally a pair that made up a paracausality engine. The Winnower that we received messages from and read about is the Mind that used to reside within Darkness and the Veil just as the Gardener resides in the Light within the Traveler. But unlike the Gardener, having access to all the data, configurations, minds, awareness gives the Winnower a far more grasping understanding of consciousness

I stll think that when Guardians die they become part of Traveler as he is being made of souls. Due to that Cayde-6 we met in Final Shape is both Cayde and Traveler. Why? During Collapse when people were diying on left and right every soul that's body died was siphoned by Traveler for later use. Because after his death Traveler absorbed Cayde's soul and made it part of itself. When Cayde got "resurrected" it was Traveler taking form of fallen Guardian as proxy to guide us to final fight. When our Ghost died Traveler manifested last time as Cayde and gave Ghost soul back but it sacraficed it's Cayde's part, for life energy - a light. That would also explain how Guardians are resurrected. Each time Guardian is ressurected Traveler uses light of a soul that he rips from itself and puts back into Guardian's body. So Guardians are containing their soul but energy that powers that soul comes from Traveler. So remeber: everytime you die someone else memories and sould gets feeded to you Guardin to resurrect you.

But the Traveler is NOT the true essence of all existence because the Traveler EXISTS as a BEING in the Universe, (and perhaps the Veil is also a Being, but feels more like an instrument) Guardians along with their Ghosts might become "One with the Traveler" but that begs a Question, WHERE WERE WEW, when our Ghost chose us, and brought us back into life through the power of the Light?

There is a lot of evidence to support the idea of the light being in every living thing remember how dresden Yor talked about "sparks of light" when he killed his victims. He even said that shin had more than a "spark" this idea is even further supported by Sundance in the final shape. I think she was trying to tell us this before the witness cut her off. She said we are ALL CONNECTED. I think she meant connected in light and when we die we return to the traveler in our original form pure primordial light from the traveler.

BIG TANGENT: Though Seth Dickinson has noted that Destiny seems to be diverging from their ideas of the cosmology as laid out in the grimoire and Books of Sorrow, EVERYBODY WHO READS THIS COMMENT should read Seth's novel EXORDIA. It's really wild - in it, early god like agents, not unlike the Gardiner and Winnower, saw the universe emerging from the symmetry breaking of unified nothingness, predicted that self replicating life would arise and lead to minds, and that minds existing in a universe of deterministic physical laws would lead those minds to be simple optimizers for further self replication (assholes), and built a second layer of reality, the Areteia, wrapped in the compactified extra dimensions of our spacetime manifold which allowed meaning and narrative and concepts to accrue and influence physics in limited ways, which ultimately means that minds develop free will rather than just following evolutionary programing, and this free will in use leads each mind to develop bundles of areteic information made of narratives, which we call "souls". So then of course structures emerge which are essentially afterlives, and there's this absolutely insane bit where the main characters (spoilers) have to make a slingshot maneuver through a death manifold to escape getting nuked. READ IT

I keep hoping one of the major narrative beats will focus on The Guardian (us) and why Ghost was looking for us/how he knew to look for us. I don't need regional/cultural/ethnic backstory details. Just something to explain why we're so randomly badass and unstoppable when Guardians have existed for centuries and the needle barely moved until we came along. Were we some ancient hero or something? Or perhaps were we part of a deeper plot by ol' Quiet n' Floaty? Just being some rando and being the epitome of guardian excellence just feels silly in a universe with lore as deep and complex as Destiny

@chem2430 but Ghost was looking for The Guardian specifically. Not just anyone. Plenty of old bones in the Cosmodrome to choose from and Ghost spent a very long time searching for us.

@@spencerstone9631Isn't that literally how ghost function? All of the have this spark with a specific person or else they would just revive anybody. And to answer your original question. That just comes down to it being a game and game mechanics. We're literally a Self insert character.

I suspect our whole universe is a facsimile of light in the same way the infinite forest creates fake projected realities our whole reality is made of light by the traveler for the flower game. So its quite possible we all return to the traveler because it made us all out of light. The real question is would there be an afterlife in the prime universe where the traveler is from and the flower game takes place. Like when the traveler dies where would it go since it can't go back to itself.

Total theory possibly head cannon and influenced by my religion but hear me out. Guardians aren't the soul of the person reborn but rather a copy of it made from the light. The real soul is somewhere else, whatever after life you believe in, and the guardian returns to travel because they are the light of the traveler put into a body. That being flesh and bone means it can also use the darkness, but the soul is pure light
