After years of pipe smoking, buying all kinds of more expensive pipes like Peterson's, Comoy's, Savinelli's, and Chacom's, I finally decided today was finally the day to walking into my local drugstore and buy my first Dr. Grabow. And now here I am puffing some Velvet tobacco for her maiden voyage. A vintage blend for a vintage pipe. Though she isn't as aesthetically as pleasing as some of the others, she is most certainly a charmer. Thanks, Dr. Grabow. You are a true legend of American pipe making and I am pleased to finally have a piece of yours in my collection; it was long overdue.

It's a shame various everyday things, rituals, attitudes etc. have fallen by the wayside in todays so called modern society. I used to have about 6 pipes in a pipe rack years ago and yes, I did smoke Velvet. I liked it better as a cigarette tobacco, In fact years ago velvet containers were marked "smoking tobacco" as opposed to pipe tobacco.

My sister's & I bought my dad a Dr Grabow back in the 70's in an attempt to get him to cut back on cigarettes, I still have that pipe today along with a few other Dr Grabow's. Beautiful pieces of Americana.

I just bought one based on Matches 860 video. Lovely, classic, good old, hand made, American tobacco pipe on its way to me in Switzerland. Super!

I took up the pass time in 2014 with another American made pipe, a MM Legend. Since then I've acquired dozens more pipes of all types and description. I've got several Grabows. I have a few that were made before the company moved to Sparta from Chicago where they were made by Linkman. Those are among my favorites.

Most of my pipes are Kaywoodies and vintage Dr. Grabows. Even the Willards and Mastercraft were made in the Sparta plant. I can honestly say most of my pipes are Dr. Grabow made!

If you want a not to pricey pipe but a good quality pipe, you buy a Dr. Greybow. I also like a real simple pipe from Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipe.

I have a Cardinal style Grabow that I only smoke Lane's Ready Rubbed in. Great smoking pipe, more than worth the $30 I paid for it.

I don't own a dr. Grabow pipe but I would bet that there isn't a machine that pre smokes the pipes. That just means there is a bowl coating applied.

It's good quality brair pipe, I have savoy model, it smokes great. It's cheap because it's not a international brand like Peterson or savinelli. Brair used may not be always of highest quality like used in dunhill pipes.

Phoenix I have smoked a dunhill and an Eastern European pipe made of pear wood from Mr. Brog, Frankly, I do not feel there is much different in the quality of the smoke between them. Guess marketing throughly affects psychology. :)

@@alvinkoh5556 And that's the point. Some people think they need an expensive high end pipe to get a perfect smoke out of it but that's not the case. Cheaper pipes can be a perfect smoker as well.

Dr. Grabows are not cheap, the are inexpensive. I just restored a Dr. Grabow Grand Duke blue Spade, one of my favorite estate pipes.

@@ironheadbill I too dislike the word 'cheap' when referring to something that offers inexpensive value. I have one Grand Duke (blue spade) Rhodesian, with straight shank that I got along with the pipe rack I was aiming for on ebay. Its crown was broken and missing a piece so I just cut off the top 3/16" and filed it down to a strawberry shape. I'm smoking my first MM Legend as I type, and I bought it from the drugstore 9 yrs ago.
