What you have to do is take the cost of your solar system which is good for around 15 to 20 years depending on the quality and divide the two to determine the yearly cost. Then take your yearly estimated power bill cost and subtract that to see if it makes sense beyond the environmental effects. If it costs 300k for a system that is got to be taken into account and heaven forbid a typhoon doesn't destroy it. Most of us will be renters as foreigners can't own property so solar is a mute point and perhaps a small generator would be more practical for brown out situations.

I have Solar in Texas and like you I received my 1st full month's bill. I have an all electric house and also only charge a Tesla model s at home. I have a 16.8 kw set up without batteries and it produced 2900 kwh and we used 2400 kwh. To be connected to the grid it cost about 30+/- depending on how much you input from the grid. Our July bill was $19 Dollars and without solar it would've been over $300 Dollars. I'm still trying to get my wife to take advantage of the sun power and hopefully that last bill will be the wake up she needs. James you do a great job of explaining how this works and I see many of your viewers switching to solar. Last thing, in America battery backup is really expensive so what I did was get a larger system that's designed to produce a little more than my yearly average. 10kw batteries cost about 10k after rebates. After doing the math it was much cheaper to add the panels.
@perspective4517
@perspective4517 2 жыл бұрын
Solid logic to oversize rather than waste money on a battery if the grid is relatively stable. Only problem where I live is that most homes are single phase which limits the installation to 10kW. A 3-phase connection allows 30kW, which sounds like overkill until you start charging electric vehicles at home. It's a pity Tesla refuses to make their car batteries bi-directional to allow you to run the house off the car battery. The newer Nissan Leaf has this function so when you arrive home from work with a near full battery (after charging at work), you run your house off the car battery, which reduces the surge of demand that occurs late afternoon/early evening. The aim is to eventually shift grid consumption to the daytime when more renewable energy is available and have a distributed battery arrangement (private car ownership) to lower the need for coal/nuclear and feed hydro and geothermal into the grid. Won't solve the whole problem, but does start to chip away at domestic energy use (homes and light vehicles).

It's not free until the solar panel and equipment is paid off. 16k USD and he's saving $170 per month means it'll be close to 8 yrs before there's any savings, God forbid anything that's out of warranty goes bad. Of course you have active cyclone 🌀 season which means lots of cloudy days, little too no power being generated. Then you have the necessary cleaning of the glass on the solar panels. Believe me, if you don't think dirt builds up then India wasted a lot of money installing an automatic glass cleaner on their huge solar farm. Just another mechanical thing to fail, which allows the glass to get covered in dirt = no power being generated. It's a wonderful thought but it's got a long way to be perfected

Hello again, could you create a Playlist for your solar video's. No one breaks it down like you do and it's a great place to learn the benefits of solar. I live in Texas, many of my neighbors don't believe me when I tell them you don't buy solar for today, it's about locking in future expenses related to electricity needs. Overall I need to average $200 per month in production over 15yrs to break even. As the cost of electricity rises my payback shrinks.
@MyPIDream

Hi MJ. There is a playlist called "How To Install Solar". Electricity is expensive here and we save at least $200/month on our bill. I expect with the addition of the solar panel on our second PV string we'll be almost off-grid once the solar days become longer and the weather is better. Maybe March or April.
@myrrhavm

Pretty crazy the cost of power there. Comparable to a 3bd 2bth home in California running AC and other appliances. What did the system cost? Here in California solar wouldn’t pay for itself for about 15 years and the payments or lease costs would be equal to or more than the electric bill itself. If I were to move to a far less expensive home and had large equity I would consider adding it depending on where I moved to. Assuming you’re far wealthier there than you were in Canada. Wise purchase. Adding a small wind turbine to generate power during inclement weather may be a bonus as well seeing you get much cloud cover. Just a thought.

Ya I live in Covina, Ca. For the same system with battery backup that James got would cost me 45K then minus 26% tax write off. Panels are better quality and converters are Sol Ark 15K better brands. Battery however is still manufactured in China but under better QC supervision. Labor and engineering costs is what kills it here in the states. Expats just takes that for granted but expect the same high quality of work for the cheap labor rates and professional engineering designs . But the electrical rates are almost the same here in California. Just talked to SCE about the solar conversion with net metering and was told SCE will pay me 3cents a KWH I sent to the grid but will buy during peak hrs (5pm to 8pm) 52cents a KWH from them. Its 32 cents during off peak. So you re helping SCE power the neighborhood and any excess credit they buy from you at 3cents they sell back at 52cent if your battery can't provide till the sun rise. Its a win win situation for the electric companies in California.

@@MyPIDream ROI should include the opportunity costs of the 800K that you invested in the Solar. For example, if you invested that 800K into Pagibig Fund which has a 6.5% return, that's 4,333 pesos return per month. Factor in as well the compounding gains if you reinvested the returns into the fund every year. Pagibig would yield 4,615 pesos per month in Y2, 4,914 pesos in Y3 and so forth.

I'm looking at my AEC bill for this past month right now, I don't know how you're able to use so little electricity. My bill shows my usage of 75 KWH daily average so I'm paying about 35,000 php per month. Where I live it's 4.667 p/kwh residential rate, there is a generation charge, of capacity and energy next to that, that says 10.06 cents per kwh, and a transmission charge of 2.316 cents per KWH, so technically if you just do a KWH for cost it's .1937 per KWH generically, its here in NEPA, in the states, but there are surcharges included. The best rate I ever had was I live in Kentucky in early 200's and if you lived in a city you Kentucky Utlilities and for me with 2 kids and wife with idr what kind of heat it was between 26-40 a month. It's me and my grown boys 20, and 17 both 6' 200lb I'm 6' 300lbs. Our biggest use is furnace for heating water. And running large refer, and dishwasher. It says average 18 kwh p/day. we used 578 kwh this month and the bill total was $111.94. Now my friend just got a subsidy through the federal gov. through out state. He got 36 panels on his house, a 14,500 KWV system. But irt was $56,000. But he had to get it by the end of the year and for him getting it he got $14k off of the bill so he financed the $42k for 25 years idk if that was smart but his electric bill is huge as all of his house has electric heat(the most costly way to make heat as you only get about 10 cents of heat for every dollar of electricity you make, now that may have changed now with the Mitsubishi heat pumps/ac) But he has those to also heat and cool his house I think he told me before he installed them. In winter really cold his electric bill was 600-800 a month. SO I guess if he got a good rate I guess it might have been worth it. But he has a wife and 2 little kids and his parents also live there so he might have some health paying the bills. I don't know what your system cost you to install but it sounds like you are making out from it.

I'm really considering adding solar to our new home in the Philippines. It is good to know that you are seeing such a large reduction of electric usage from the power company. We added solar to my wife's family home in Capas Tarlac. It IS a 7 KW system, so quite a bit smaller than yours. When we installed it we were told that the battery life was an issue in the Philippines heat, so I'm really interested to see how your system works in the long term. They generated 528 excess KWh and were paid 5,338,50 PHP at 10.1108 PHP/KWh via net metering in July. It is interesting that their power consumption has gone up quite a bit since the panels were installed. Before they never used the bedroom AC during the day, but they routinely do now. Also, they make more rice cake in the oven than ever before. :-)

Even better than I was guessing! I'm sure you already know this so hoping you will include it in an upcoming post. With this final bit of accounting now in your hot hands and me being lazy and not wanting to go back and get the numbers from previous videos. What will your POI be all based on current numbers??? I really was thinking you would need at least 2 additional batteries but seems as though its pretty close on storage at present, maybe 1 additional battery wouldnt hurt though. Long before your project I have been researching installers here on Mindinao but have been put off by most of them after talking to them in person and asking questions and some really odd answers I've gotten from some, so that makes me wander how well they know there products and some, how well they know solar products. I have knocked on 3 peoples doors that I have seen panels on there roofs, and were graciously talked too with the owners and every single one was not happy with there installer and most of all there service after being paid in full. Your very lucky to have found such a great company, but you have far more to choose from than we do down south, so the search continues for me. Cebu has far more companies so may start looking there to see if they will do northern Mindinao. Its a big expense up front but no question in most cases, it will pay for itself over time and with the direction the world has taken I think its a really worthwhile expense.

Our current ROI is about 7.5 years but like you said, adding one more additional battery would insure full off-grid power overnight in almost all scenarios. So if we do get another battery the ROI would be over 8 years. Since most solar systems run 15-20 years before consideration of replacement hardware, this would give us plenty of years of FREE energy. 15-20 years will bring more efficient and better technology so it would be a good upgrade as well.

@@MyPIDream I checked with 2 freight forwarders and they said customs in China is not allowing them to import batteries into the PI. This is since the end of May. I don't know if this is China customs not allowing the export or if they have PI customs their not allowing the import. It's not easy to get accurate detailed info here.

@@timgunlover2050 I've been looking and talking to "companies" here on Mindinao for months now and am stupified after talking to the majority of them. I'm looking for a 12-15kw system, but by far the vast majority of them DONT even offer batteries at all and the few that do mostly only offer old lead acid batteries with Lithium Iron Phosphate very rarely even offered, and then I get the feeling they know very little about them when I ask the questions like what brand are they and they arnt sure. Answers about inverters are even more disconcerting than batteries. I've just not found any "company" on all of Mindinao so far that I would even consider buying a system from. I've talked to 7 actual companies up in the Manila area that I've been impressed with but none will come to Mindinao or especially do after install servicing. I went to a solar convention back in July at the convention center in Manila. I've found 2 in Cebu area that will install here but any after install servicing I will have to pay for all technician expenses getting here are back to Cebu by air and anything they bring with them. I've talked to 5 people now that I just saw panels on there house and tried knocking on there door, not one single one of them were happy with there systems or installers of varying degrees. I'm getting very frustrated about it and trying to learn a lot more about solar and products available and have joined some online solar groups that have started me thinking about buying it all and some extra parts from Signature Solar in US and sending it here by container and doing it myself using quality components from US for international use, and panels purchased here from China. I'm still looking but more and more thinking of doing it myself .

James , hindsight being 20/20, and you have been close to 4-5 years since finished building there, would you have gone Solar @ the start considering the ROI?, here I see neighbors putting up Solar despite the grants being pulled out or reduced , this despite the fact that Asphalt Roof might need replacement in 20-25 years.

I interviewed about 3 solar companies during the build but I wasn't satisfied with any at the time because none wanted to spread the PV panels across multiple roof areas like we did here. They said it wouldn't work. I don't know why at that time they were so ill informed about solar. Glad we waited for the more better PV panels and Li-Ion batteries instead of lead acid. Our ROI is about 7.5 years.

Apologies if this is so technical but I’m a bit confused with the solar generated power ! assuming your daily consumption was about 25KWH , and you are using around 1.5-2KWH daily from the grid , this conclude that the daily average solar power generated from the system is around 23-23.5 KWH , is this correct? Comparing to 27KWH (4.5x6 hours) projected. Does a 9.9KWH system with NOCT, loses in the system and weather can really derate to less than 4KWH actual generation (only 40% efficiency!)?

But James what was your total cost of installing and purchasing your solar panels to calculate how many years first! For it to be paid in full then look at your monthly costs. We'll done for another very interesting vlog. PS Could you please give me a price to buy a ready built 3 bedrm 3 bathroom modern European or American style pool villa house with a double covered car port. The pool size 10mtrs x 4 mtrs saltwater with an outdoor shower/small toilet area. A pool house with a pressurised pump? Please. How much would a lot cost in your area say 280sq internal with external of 600sq.mtrs approx with a 6ft high solid concrete bar with internal rear and concrete posts with external wall lighting. With a modern European style large kitchen and an island with twin deep sinks. A 5 ring gas cooker, an electric fan oven, a built-in 30ltr 900-1000W power new Microwave above the cooker. A dining table and then the living room TV lounge area all one large open plan central living area. Atleast two of the bedrms will be King size beds with 2 bedside cabinets with a TV at the end of the bed. Two bedrooms will have an ensuite bathroom/Shower and have twin separate wash basins and large lighted wall mirrors and a modern American style toilet with a hand shower. A bidet for the lady. All windows will open for fresh air with mosquito sliding door screens. Two of the bedrooms will look directly to the pool and will have full height toughened glass sliding or folding doors. Two bedrooms will have a walk-in closit with the master bedroom being the largest closet and a small dressing area. The villa/Bungalow will also have a separate utility room to the rear with a single sink and have a double wall unit and a double floor unit for storage for the built-under the counter washing machine/dryer vented to the outside wall. The 3rd bathroom can possibly be a Jack and Jill. The Double car garage will be wide enough and large enough to take 1 car and 2 motor bikes and room to add all of the solar panel electrical equipment thanks to your very valuable vlogs. My choice of roof will be the same as your home with a red tiled sloping roof with all round solid rain water guttering and down pipes and at the bottom rain water drains several around the house to drain into large diameter pipes to prevent flooding of the garden area. Q. What diameter of drainage pipe would be best 8 inch? For my future landscape garden. Boy I am so impressed with all of Villa Feliz landscaping just so gorgeous a dream for me would come true. I have a love of palm trees and colourful flowering tropical shrubs. I can see you are a very clever man and your knowledge of building a house with a beautiful landscaped garden is amazing. I would love to meet you and your lovely wife one day when I come to the Philippines to either buy or build my dream luxury home. My last question if okay is how much would it cost me to buy a lot in your area or in some of the provinces? I am not a city person I love scenery and the countryside within driving distance to a nice sandy beach but not essential having a pool. I would be very grateful to you for your best guess on the total cost bearing in mind I know building materials have risen on some islands. I am sure I can buy you both a nice dinner for any kind assistance you can offer this retired Scottish gentleman. I have been enjoying your many house build videos about your Canadian neighbours new build. They were excellent as I know nothing about building a new house. Thank You!
