You need a Compaq Smartstart CD-ROM. With that cd you can configure all the Compaq parts and compaq raid controllers. Really cool to see the disk array. I had one back in 2005 or something. ML370 with 7x 36gb compaq diskshelf with 14x 36gb and a dell disarray 12x 18gb (I have this unit back, im collecting 73gb 15K drives for it 😀)

Correct! The SmartStart CD will allow you to assign various hardware addresses/boot order/etc. for all your stuff. I had a similar machine back in the day, but a Gen2 I believe, and that CD was indispensable for setup operations!😉

I had a similary proliant server in Denmark. You can easy run the drive bay on the internal SCSI controller , thats actually why you have the SCSI connetor on the back. You need to set a jumper on the motherboard and set it up in the bios to function also remember to set each drives SCSI adress on the drive itself otherwise it will conflict and thus you cant see the drives. You didnt need to remove the network card at all. you have 2 unused PCI slot , you just put the adaptek in one of those if want to use that one ( I had this adaptec too ) To make it work you need to config the adaptek as a secondary controller and you be without trouble. Just remenber SCSI drives have an adress jumper on the drives themselves or / and in the BAY , so set the internal to SCSI 0 and the BAY to SCSI 1 they you good to go . Hope it help you a little. GO to JHP/ COMPAQ and download the PDF manual and check all jumpers on the motherboard , they play a crusial role in the config.

Oh and to make it really fast . Run LINUX on the server , IT really give you both resources free and more power to run applications. ITS actually a really nice server they never break down especially not with LINUX installed. ( damn I regret I didnt get my servers with me when I leaved Denmark )

Ah yes, this comes from the dark age of computing where the end user had to know how to terminate a SCSI bus, terminate a token ring network and other hardware things like manually setting an IRQ on expansion cards. Now we just have to do that all in software (BIOS/Option ROMs) :-)

Now that sounds good. I have a local it security co that sells me parts, I have clearence too, but I can get what I want cheap... Or eBay... Now this video was interesting. I was having a debate about Linus tech tips and the servers he had made for people "ltt 130tb file server Nas." Now I'm old school, so when I think of the problem and solutions I have over 4 decades of knowledge. Now there is this NAS thingy, and we'll the problem is raw uhd camera (4k+) video from red cameras so a minute is somewhere around 730gb a minute. (High frame rate slow motion). Now I think the Nas is the wrong solution. I would think SAN and or DAS is the correct solution to the problem. The premises are; that storage requirements grow quickly. That you can add more for less. Now Nas boxes are limited servers so when the bays and drives are full, that's really it. You could buy another one, but is that really cost effective when you can use das and San? What's your view? I think scaleability is key here in these types of problems.
@MyPlayHouse

Hi Rory Witham Thank You very much! I think Linus Tech Tips,, is just accumulating to much video,, or rather,, they record it in to high a resolution and do not use the compression,, they are recording video in a quality that most cinemas would not be able to show,,, WHY,, These tech videos are irrelevant in a few years. I do not get it. I am at over 900 videos and just under 10TB,, and I have every pieces of footages, projekt, rendered out videos and the graphics.. Thank you for watching! :-)

@@MyPlayHouse yes seems that people are keeping raw formats. I can't see them taking all that space! I got some thing you may like to see, it's from a video you shot back in 2015. Your first servers, I've got one which is a little older...and I have it's DAS as well. Oh the weight of them!! I'll have to go to my storage to get the matching desktop unit for it too... I'll try a video sometime this week hopefully. I'll tag you if I can..

When you first connected the top array it was all set up good, all you had to do was set your external disk array to id1 not id0 as it must have been set and the server would have booted on its internal boot disk and the os would have mounted the top array as drive D:/E:/F:/ so on dependent on its config. Where you went wrong was not having a scsi terminator on the top array ie where you plugged in the cable on the top array there should have been a second port where you would have needed to add a scsi terminator at the end of the scsi chain, if not an external port you must place a terminator at the end of the internal scai cable insidt the disk array, the controller would have then seen the conflict issued a warning but would have auto incremented the id and fixed its self, the controller would have looked up the chain for the terminator the array inside the box may have had a terminator which if present should have been unplugged from the internal controller/cable if it was present, and placed at the end of the array on the top box, remember the disk array you have could have been /dev/scsi/0/lun0/id0 of a /dev/scsi/0/lun/14/id15/ array with up to 255x14x14 disks the chain stops with a terminator and data can then flow back to the controller and would have auto incremented the id of the array and reported its disks and array correctly the 4 errors you had at the bottom of the screen showed the conflict of the internal and external array on the same controller reporting the same ID0, un plugged the adaptec controller and top array then at boot using the internal scsi controller bios just rebuild the internal array and reboot simples ;) hope this simplifies the scsi chain.
