I received an HP dl560 Gen8 from Sören, a subscriber in Germany. Sören had gotten this server for his online business : www.File-Conve...
The dl560 is loaded with four Intel Xeon E5-4627v2 CPU's and 128GB of RAM.
More about this server : h20195.www2.hp...

This Server is avalable at www.bargainhar...
It starts at £246 as an empty shell, and the prices goes up as you put more stuff in it. Some of the components are very cheap, where others will make the server go up in prices very quickly.
But if you using the Coupon Code : myplayhouse at checkout, will give you a 5% discount.

For 3$ a month, you get an extra weekly "What's UP" update video. Just for my Patrons. The Support I resave on patreon is all used on stuff to make interesting videos on KZbin.
My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

I'm happy to buy that server from you when you get annoyed looking at the HP-logo ;) Regarding the FlexLOM... The "FLR" in the model name, designates "FlexLOM Rack", while "FLB" means "FlexLOM Blade". HP/E nics often come in 4 types: PCIe, FlexLOM for rack servers, and FlexLOM for blade servers, and Mezzanine for blades. However, the number stays the same across all of them, and identifies the chipset used. So if you for compatibility reasons need the same card in a rack server, and a blade server, you know to get 554FLR for the rack server, if you have a 554FLB in the blade server. They all follow this pattern: 554FLR (FlexLOM Rack) 554FLB (FlexLOM Blade) 554m (Blade Mezzanine) nc554 (PCIe card) (FYI: example, this doesn't exist)

This is a cool model,, I have 30 of the dl560 Gen10 at work,, so I have had a little hands 🙌 on,, they have actually worked well for about 4years now,, without much trouble.

Hi Morten and greetings from Bulgaria. A great video and an interesting server (despite the wrong brand 🤞). I am pretty sure that it can handle more than 768GB of RAM, to be exact 1.5TB of RAM - 48 DIMMs with 32GB RAM sticks. It was an expensive 2U server back in 2012-14. The Lenovo answer to this server is x3750 M4 which also uses 4600 series CPUs but it has normal drive bays in front because of the 2 level design of positioning the CPUs on the motherboard. Cheers 🍻

Nice gift from viewer! Great to see all 4 CPU's populated. Noticed, that SAS connector's is in the air flow way.. Theoretically, this may restrict some air flow. From design point of view, IBM is better though over, especially, air flow. Cool thing in this HP, is that fans can be quickly changed without opening case. Now I'm waiting to see how loud is this server running.. and some testing.. 😉

A cool thing about that LOM port is that it supports all the LOM cards, not just the ones on the supported page on their website. That means cards from Gen 9 and 10 also work on that server. I have a DL380 Gen 8 with a dual-port 40Gbps LOM card, for example.
@KayJay01
@KayJay01 3 жыл бұрын
And since they're not regular PCIe they have little resale value, meaning you can get the LOM cards for like $40 on eBay. But now there are people making PCIe to LOM adapters so you can actually get 40gbps ethernet for like $60 each with the adapter

Hi, it is a little scary reading your bio. I share many of your interests and also have many 1/2 finished projects ! Thank you for your time in putting these videos together, I have not seen anything quite like them before - well done. I have recently acquired some newer server hardware ( i.e. I have lots of other, older hardware too ), example of my recent acquisitions; HP Proliant DL160G6, 1 x CPU, 4 x 2Tb, 32Gb RAM, also HP Proliant DL360, 2 x CPU, 6 x 2Tb, 128Gb RAM and last but by no means least, a MONSTER - Dell VXRail, 4 x ( 2 CPU, 5 x 2Tb + 1 x 800Gb, 256Gb RAM ) I can hardly lift it ! My question is what is the best use ( other than home heating ) for this equipment ? I wonder if you could put something together to show us how to get the best use out of these machines, and maybe even to make a little money to feed the addiction ! Thanks again...

Great video. I've been looking into buying one of these DL560 servers for 3D rendering in Autodesk Maya. Could you run Windows 10 Pro off a SATA SSD on this server? Will Windows 10 Pro recognize all 4 CPUs? I have been told it has a maximum allocation of 2 CPUs unless you cough up the money for Windows 10 Pro Workstation. Lastly, are the fans super loud at idle or only when running at full blast? I'm thinking of turning it into a daily driver PC as the software licenses I use make it too expensive to have multiple computers with the same graphics packages on them. Rather I need my mainframe render machine and daily driver to be the same computer.

@@MyPlayHouse BTW the RAID controller is actually the chip under the heat sink you pointed out, the card is mostly the Flash Backed Write Cache inc the controller logic necessary for it. Also - if you feel like it - you should try out TrueNAS with that box. It's ideal as long as you use the HBA you got with it (never use hardware RAID for ZFS!). It's easy to set up and with TN Scale you get some interesting new features. Future video?
@eDoc2020
@eDoc2020 3 жыл бұрын
@@71Kailee The onboard RAID controller can actually be switched to HBA mode if that is preferred. The downside here is that you can't have some drives in HW RAID and some in HBA at the same time in this generation.
@71Kailee
@71Kailee 3 жыл бұрын
@@eDoc2020 Hi and thanks for mentioning the HBA mode - it's an important point! Don't be fooled by this - yes the drives will apear as single drives but the controller is not in a true hba mode when switched using ssacli or anything else (like the service pack iso for instance). Best example of how this is still not true HBA mode for things like TrueNAS is that smartctl doesn't work properly... However for some non-critical evaluation etc it might be ok. You're still better off just popping in a true LSI HBA.
@eDoc2020
@eDoc2020 3 жыл бұрын
@@71Kailee I haven't played around that much with HBA mode but I'm surprised about smartctl. I remember with the right options (it wasn't autodetected) I was able to use smartctl in RAID mode. Maybe the same is true in HBA mode?
