Thank you. This is one of the best videos for VW cam chain tension-er gasket replacement procedures on KZbin. My mechanic tells me that this is actually called the "sneak" gasket procedure. Basically, not having to take the front of the car apart and the timing belt and so forth, you are basically "sneaking" this gasket in. The longest part of performing this procedure is cleaning the old RTV off the valve cover corner seat and cover corners, and also under the cam chain tensioner. All-in-all this is the fastest, best way to replace this annoying gasket as long as there is no physical damage to the tension-er chain guides. If the cam tension-er chain guides are damaged, then the longer procedure is recommended, which the long procedure is not recommended for do-it-yourself-ers. Thank you!

Great video, I've done this job in the past. The only thing I would suggest is removing the fuel hoses. Watching you work around them drove me nuts..

Hello I have a 2006 audi a6 and I have a bad misfire on cylinders 4, 5 and 6. Took the plugs out and they have oil on them. Cleaned them off and ran fine for about 5 minutes then started misfiring again. Oil back on the plugs fouled out. What do you suggest besides a new VCG set? Thanks

One question. Does anyone know if the driver side chain gasket can be accessed easily? I keep reading that to get enough lift to pull out the gaskets i have to remove a timing cover.

Hi I have a 2000 Passat the car was running great till It started to make a loud noice on top of valve cover (driver side) and also the low oil pressure light was coming on the first thing I did was remove the oil pan I thought it was oil pump or the pickup tube was clogged and was the cause of the noice and low oil pressure but what I found was a lot of pieces of plastic so I remove the valve cover and the half moon on the cam chain tensioner was gone my first question is #1 can I replace just the broken plastic piece ? # 2 if I change the tensioner completely do I have to find the timing marks on the timing belt before doing this ? I appreciate your time if you can share some knowledge I will really appreciate great videos !! Thank you for taking the time and posting them

why is it necessary to have filtered air go to the smog pump? Maybe something can be gotten to put an element on that pipe without routing it back to the cover and just sealing the hole in the air filter cover shut?

I have a question would you please answer. My car allroad 2.7t and smoke coming out from the passenger back side(where half moon seal located just so you know the location). Do you think it is camshaft gasket? I checked head gasket - it is good but my other guess that it could be turbo leaking oil. But it is a little oil under camshaft lead so I have 2 guesses. Thanks.

R&W I hope you can help me. My 2006 A6 C6 3.2 FWD came up with the EPC light and would not shift out of Park. Pulled the code 17090 Tranmission Range sensor F125 P0706 000 Implausible signal. Cleared the code and it will shift like normal but the error keeps coming back. I hope you can help. Thx

Can someone help me plz? *Note, I did not have the timing belt in place. While removing the left side pulley sprocket, I forgot to use the camshaft holder. So, once I turned the bolt on the pulley clockwise, the whole cam tensioner belt and cams turned with it. Did I cause any damage and how can I reverse this:(? Thanks in advance

Ok... I must be missing something between this video Part 1 and Part 2. I purchased the special VW Cam tool. Everything went smooth up to using the special tool. Part 2 goes right into using this tool so that’s what I did. I made sure the tool was resting on the so called bottom plastic, left of what looks like a flat tabbed fork. I proceeded to tighten the tool down and did not see any slack in the chain. Continued to tighten more and finally the tool started cracking. Again, no slack in the cam chain whatsoever... The tool is now useless. Now... Was there something else you loosened up before using this tool between the end of this video and the beginning of Part 2 that was not covered?! And yes... you were right regarding the plastic PCV tube. Mine cracked. Will try to use duct tape on it or find one at pick-n-pull yard. Not spending the $50 for a new one.

Hey. I have a 2001 Audi A4 with a 2.8 and like lots of others I've had trouble with oil leaks for years. Using your videos I've done lots of repairs including camshaft seals and caps and valve cover gaskets. I recently had my drivers side rear cam cap blow out and I;m starting to think that my leak issues are related to the secondary air system and the engine is actually over pressuring and causing the leaks. Any suggestions?

Thanks for posting the great video. I'm getting ready to do this procedure on the exact same vehicle because of smoke. I've read that the engine should/might have be at TDC when doing it. Is that true? My driver side spark plugs and boot wires have oil on them as well, so I assume I need to do the valve cover gaskets there as well. 98 A6 Quattro with 84k.

@myRatchets 10 жыл бұрын
It doesnt have to be at tdc but I guess it would be safer. You can also first try replacing the valve cover gasket and camshaft cap to see if it solves your smoking problem. In my experience most of the times its those two that leak and not actually the cam chain gasket and the half moon. I have a video on valve cover gasket and cam cap replacement, just look in my channel. GL

RatchetsAnd Wrenches Thanks for the quick reply! I had it to the stealership and they said it needs new camshaft seals as well, don't know if that's the case yet. I figured since I'm in there might as well change them since I will have the parts. I've been reading different opinions on rtv'ing the caps. Same say don't and some say do. Any opinion? I watched your video of that like you recommended and saw that you made no mention of rtv'ing it. If the rear cap was bad on the drivers side would oil be leaking on a hot pipe and smoking? From what I've researched it's only the back passenger side that causes smoking from oil leaking on a hot pipe.
@myRatchets
@myRatchets 10 жыл бұрын
yes its only the back passenger side that causes smoke, a thin layer of rtv on the cap would probably not hurt anything.

you can replace the 2 cam seals on that engine without removing camshafts, but you can only replace one of them without removing the timing belt. Thanks for watching!

You should be replacing the chain guides. They fall apart half way through the life of the engine and bend the valves. Disaster. It is a terrible design. The engineer who designed the chain adjuster should be flogged. These engines are all dying. Replace the guides at 200K km . You can do it leaving the exhaust cam in place.
