Glad to hear it helped you on your 94 v6. Yours probably has alot more miles plus its older..thats probably why it was hard to get them off. cheers

I've done plenty of timing belts on 4.2 V8s (set up just like the V6) and never had to loosen or pull the cam pulleys. Leave them bolted. If you need to move the cam to fit the alignment tool you can use one end of the alignment tool or a ratchet with socket to move the cam shafts.

Great tutorial. The VW dealer wanted $1800 to do this. Parts from Amazon totaled about $210 and with my labor, the repair costs what the parts cost. Dealerships charge 4 times the cost for parts and their labor is $140/hr. This guy just saved my Passat from the junkyard.

nice video this was all good info ive done this before and always fought with geting the belt on the cam pulleys right then i saw how you separate the pulleys and tighten them up after the belt is engaged. This worked like a charm thanks again.
Great video and well detailed.. I do have a question from part 1 and that I’d when the cam lock bar was installed (engine at TDC) why did you rotate the crank 30° ccw? Was that to stay below the deck when you took the cam lock bar off to do all the components, water pump..etc? If you had the crank lock pin in you would not have needed to go ccw, you have the crank lock pin why didn’t you use it here? Thanks

Thanks for the great tutorial! Mine has split down the middle, not completely splitting and holding the timing in place still. Lucky me, I hope that the heads cylinders pistons and valves are okay..

on 7;10 did you move 30 degrees counter clock wise the crank for avoiding contact of valves and pistons?? do you have any video of same engine but removing auxiliary vtec timing tensioner any tip when I remove the cams is that a good Idea to move the crank shaft 30 degrees left? thanks for sharing

great video. i used this video to replace the timingbelt for my audi cabriolet v6 1994. except for the tensioner its quite the same. Surprised how easily your camshaft gears went off. mine were stuck. couldnt get them loose.

Excellent video! Jut perfect! I got a broken timing belt right after I bought my passat - same day. Now I've been replacing my heads for a couple weeks. I ordered a timing belt kit and I was wondering how to get that stupid fan clutch pulley out of its location?

Great Video ! I wanted to know do the cam Gears Need to be lined up with some type of marks when putting it back together i see there is a cam sensor to check the timing or something on the driver side of the head?

I managed to replace waterpump,timing belt,and all components without removing front end. I did not use any cam locking tool and i used no crank holding plug. As a matter of fact it was not hard at all. But when reinstalling you move crank back one tooth counter clockwise and you move drivers side cam back one tooth counter clock wise and install belt. There will be slack so when you turn crank clockwise to top dead center it will pull the slack from the whole belt and all cams will be realigned. Be sure to mark the crank and both cams with nail polish before you remove old timing belt. Easiest timing belt i've ever done. Only thing hard about the job was unbolting the many bolts holding water pump in and bolting in new water pump.

That's what I like about BMWs and Mercedes no belts just timing chains you don't have to replace.

Is it essential to separate the cam sprockets with that separator tool? Would it be impossible to fit the new belt without having the sprockets loose? I have the timing car ordered to secure between the cams, but i just wonder if the sprockets have to be loosened and put back on, is it essentially to get the belt on easier?
@Scouter983 жыл бұрын
Per audi service instructions loosening the sprockets is essential for the new belt to be tensioned correctly, if you choose not to do it you risk having the engine slightly out of time. Many techs do this with varying success, some dont even know that the sprockets are supposed to be loose, they just throw the tool 3391 on there and slap the belt on. For the peace of mind i'd recommend doing it the "right" way. Worst that can happen is a CEL for cams being out of time. By the way you should use original audi parts for timing, if not possible then its advised to use INA or HEPU products, most of the cases when the belt snaps is a failed hydraulic tensioner or a bad water pump. Thermostat should also be replaced.

How exactly does the camshaft timing belt sprocket engage to the camshaft itself? is that a friction type mating taper surface, or is there a key? that's pretty scary if there are no splines or even a shear key.

Great tutorials. I have a 99 A6 with 209000 miles, It runs great with no issues other than leaking cam / valve cover gaskets. The previous owner had timing belts changed twice. I have started disassembly but haven't removed old timing belt yet because the timing mark on the balancer is several mm past arrow while the cam locking tool is in correct position. The current timing belt mates well and all the teeth are intact. Could a previous mechanic have reset the camshafts off a degree or could the cam chains or chain tensioner be causing the difference in the timing mark. I have also noticed some slight belt slack around water pump pulley. Do you have any ideas on why my current timing mark is off. Could this be typical for a high mileage engine?
@myRatchets9 жыл бұрын
dan t I dont think the timing is off otherwise you would get a cel (usually for cam sensors), more likely scenario is the timing belt has stretched over time. Especially since you have more slack by the water pump. Make sure to replace the tensioner if it hasnt been replaced.

Great video. ? I may have put in the wrong thermostat w/o the bleeder valve facing up. It's not mentioned in the video and we had to get one from a local cheap autoparts store. Is it possible to change the thermostat w/o removing the timing belt and everything else?? thanks for your help
@EXOVCDS9 жыл бұрын
I have heard / read, that if you remove tension from the timing belt, you can slide the timing belt (on the bank 1 cam sprocket) towards the front of the car, to give you room to remove the thermostat (belt still on cam sprocket, just sitting 1/2 on the sprocket).

After installing timing belt when putting crank locking tool onto crank was there any resistance or did it push right on reason for asking I had to put the Locking tool on the left hand and push down on the right of the lock tool a little bit and then push it into the driver side cam after belt in installed there was no resistance

I like the video but can you show how to set 30v cams in case they are off?
@angelc71406 жыл бұрын
Nick Chesshir just rotate the crank pulley 30-45 degrees before TDC just like he did, in that position is safe to rotate the cams without hitting any valve. Needless to say all this needs too be done without timing belt, after you done aligning the marks on the cams count the links between each cam, there should be 16, once u verify this bring the crack pulley to TDC, lock the cams with the special tool and install the new timing belt.

I'm just getting my feet wet in the vw scene. I thought the 3.0 and this 2.8 were same block. I'm looking for the camshaft tool I have A4 3.0 vin T’ And the tool holds the cams by the shaft above not the sprocket. Is this the same process to hold timing. ? What about the exhaust cams position.
